I "sunday cruised" to a 5:56 on the bike and ran the entire first loop. On 6 weeks of training. I couldn't have asked for any better performance considering I did not train seriously AT ALL for the race! Edited by Daremo 2009-12-17 11:07 AM |

I would roll by them smiling on all the uphills and they would try to blow by me on the downhills (drafting mind you). Then when we turned right to head back to LP and then turned left to get to the bears it was the last I saw of them. Once the road turned up - bye bye! Wait Wait so two chicks swam faster than you WOW . Jorge is giving swimming lessons right lol About 75% of the field swam faster than me. Swimmer I am not ......... nor will I ever pretend to be! Again, I will not be setting any sort of land speed records or blazing time. I'll be lucky to finish standing up knowing the amount of training I'll realistically be getting in, the pace I will not be setting on the bike (since my tri bike and wheels are no more), my heart/medication issue and the lack of water time I will get. I have zero expectations to do well. I'm going for the experience, the "joy" that is IM and to hang with my BT peeps. |

Champion 9600 Fountain Hills, AZ | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread ^^^That's cool, but in no way can you use the expression "I smoked people" when you split almost 6 hours on the bike. You are GETTING smoked. Hell, at that pace you must be stopping to actually have a smoke! Edited by bryancd 2009-12-17 11:28 AM |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Considering not a single person passed me going up the hills (in fact, not a single person passed me on the bike and stayed there through the whole race). And 505/2345 for a bike split while sitting up on the bars and not even trying at all?? Top 25% split. So yes, I smoked people ................... Yeah, the time was a joke. Especially to me. But I'll take top 25% in a race every day of the week. Edited by Daremo 2009-12-17 2:44 PM |

I am sure a lots of folks doing IMLP will consider the hills steep. As for you, I and a few others not so much. I think in true steepness above 15% grade is steep, which I ride a lot. I love climbing also, you ever do SavageMan? Come join me at SM after LP on my way to Kona. |

StevieD - 2009-12-16 9:36 PM Has anyone heard anything about a possible change to the 2010 bike course? WHAT? I'll hurt myself if they change that course. What have you heard? Yeah funny NEW IMLP is IMFL #2. StevieD, You'll get through the LP bike. Look at it like this; You go down, you go up, you go dooooown then it's flat, then you go up, down, up, down, flat, up, down, up, down and UUUUUUuuuup. Now your done with lap #1. Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I'm not talking about racing. I'm talking about just a normal Sunday group ride. I've no doubt you can probably hang with them for a bit. But seeing the way even the average guy in the group would be able to ride and climb will put your top 35 ride in a tri into perspective. I put up a top 30 ride (including pros) at arguably one of the toughest olympic courses last year with the likes of Lieto and McCormick in the field on less than 500 miles of training for that year. And outside of Lieto, there was no one there that would have been able to drop the local 1/2/3 guys I know on a normal ride. Just think of your Boston experience and the conversation we had afterward and your perspective on what it was like to run in that field. The average "specialist" will almost always humble even the most elite "generalist." But I digress. We have some extremely talented triathletes here in this thread and on BT (obviously you included). But the reason I like to do a lot of running races and some cycling stuff is that it immediately "puts me in my place" in the overall picture. Doing well in a local tri is a bit of a joke to me. It doesn't require much effort to be top 25%, let alone top 50%. I did that at LP without even trying, INCLUDING walking almost half the marathon (and keeping a fellow BTer company even though he was going slower than me. Because it was more important to hang with him and motivate him along than save a few more minutes off of my own time). And I do it almost all the time on marginal training at best. The ridiculous thing is that I was a fairly average Cat. 3 cyclist even in my prime. Sure, I had some strong results, but most of the time I got humbled on a weekly basis. I wouldn't go as far as to say that being top 20% in the tri world is a joke when it comes to the world of individual endurance sports, but it sometimes crosses my mind. Especially when reading some things (both here and on ST) that triathletes put out. The thing that keeps me from "going there" is that if some of those people were to do just a one sport focus that they could be just as talented and successful in those. Ah well. /end hijack |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread PennState - 2009-12-17 5:02 PM Care to perhaps 'qualify' your statement sir? No swim/run. There you go, qualfied. This year? 63rd overall bike split. 97th overall run. Out of 1569 total athletes. Almost ZERO training. INCLUDING a swim, thank you very much. It is just amusing to hear all the smack and trying to keep it in perspective. And I am in NO WAY claiming I will put up any sort of decent time at this point. I know my limitations and am very accpeting of them. While it is fun to joke about my old cycling prowess I have no bones at all stating that there are plenty in the thread that will put up a better time than me in this race. I am very accepting of that and give a big "bravo" to all. I simply do not have the luxury to train the way I would like and have come to grips with that (over the last two years) as well as the limitations of my heart issues. (And I got thrown under the bus by CJ in the Eagleman thread calling me an old man ...... that's just wrong!! ). |

Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread PennState - 2009-12-17 6:48 PM Additionally, 99% of the smack is friendly and not meant to be serious in this thread. So no one better go off the deep end in their reactions... best to not get involved in the smack talk if you don't see it this way. Hmmm... I guess we're still waiting for the 1% Has anyone rode the Harryman course at Harriman State Park? Here's the profile: http://www.genesisadventures.com/v4/main.php?left=triathlons¢er=harrymantri#TheCourse Aside from doing the Harryman HIM on May 22nd, I'd also like to do a Metric Ironman in Mid-June, about three weeks after the HIM, (5 weeks out from Race Day). This is in lieu of driving all the way up to LP to do a training camp. I'm thinking, guessing, hoping that swimming in Lake Welch in Harriman, and riding three loops of what appears to be a tougher bike course than LP, and running rolling hills right after, should prepare me very nicely for LP? I was also hoping to spend a day up there a month before the HIM and try to ride 6 or 7 loops of this course. Ideally I'd like to ride a Century of this loop, but THE CLIMB is just absolutely BRUTAL. Toughest, longest climb I've ever experienced. My Goal at LP as of right now is Sub 12, and to RUN the entire Marathon. Thoughts, feedback? Thanks guys

Man does he take some abuse, oh this thing is on. They kid because they ........... love?????? When it comes to you, I do. Of course I know Cat 1-2 cyclist would kick my butt. Not so much Cat-3. But I also know I am a triathlete and that is the only matrix I measure myself against. I have SO MUCH respect for you as a cyclist and a triathlete. I think it sucks that you have the issue's you have to deal with and we may never know what your potential was. You are a GREAT athlete with so much to contribute to EVERY SINGLE person on this thread, regardless of the fact that they might be able to finish ahead of you. TEACH THEM. You know I will call a spade a spade if I hear even a whiff of grandstanding about potential. But I too will also look to help them achieve their goals. Let's work together to make these IMLP folks THE BEST of BT and let's help get a few to the big island. There is POTENTIAL here...more from me later on that. Rick, you are too good to not be positive. Edited by bryancd 2009-12-17 6:33 PM |

You can 100% RUN that marathon. I have walked/jogged a few aid stations, otherwise I have alway RUN. Why? I trained myself to run. Your bike pacing should be what you train your long rides. You stick to that, you WILL run that marathon. |
