Aikidoman - 2009-09-21 1:45 PM Ha!  I cheated on my long run yesterday.  I swear my house is in a hole, and I have to run up hill every time I leave (N,S, or W.  East is the only downhill from home).

So I drove 13 miles uphill from my house and ran downhill all the way home...  It was still hard though.

I had a friend who would do that for the tailwind. She would run with the wind behind her for 10 miles and have someone come pick her up.

I was going to say the same thing (well, keeping the part about pumpkins)

JChristoff - 2009-09-21 12:44 PM It sucks having a cold and not getting a single call back from a doctor's office on trying to set up an appointment.... I mean... I have called 5 places. I guess that is my bad for not having a primary care physician that I have kept in contact with... but this is ridiculous.

Don't think it helps to have a primary care physician either, it takes a miracle to get a appointment there too.

Really?  I can usually get an appointment with my doctor if I am sick.  Once in awhile, I have to see the nurse practitioner instead, but that's better than not being seen.

It was the first time I have ever done that...  But the thought of going up more hills was unappitizing...  However, having the wife drive me the 30 minutes to get my car and the 30 minutes back was not fun.  I ended up spending 90 minutes in a car for a 2 hour run.

We don't really have hills here in Chicago but the wind can get extra mean, so I leave my money at home. Prevents me from riding the el back from the end of the trail.

I personally don't ride the trainer enough to warrant a bike dedicated just to trainer rides...  If I did, I guess it's an ok idea.  I would rather do a spin class or something.

You worry about replacing the cassete, chain, tires?  Buy a cheap trainer tire, cassettes are only 70 bucks, chains are 30 bucks tops.  You have only spent maybe 150 bucks IF you have to replace any of it.  A used bike will cost more than that.

Spokes - 2009-09-21 3:41 PM Most of you know I commute here in Sacramento most of the year on my road bike, but once winter/dark/rain months (all 2 1/2 weeks we get of rain) arrive, I switch to my mountain bike. Since my mileage goes down in the dark, I also ride my trainer.

I don't have oodles and gobs of cash to spend, and really want to keep my road bike in the best shape possible and not have to replace the cassette, wheelset, chain, etc. any sooner than I have to (I ride 3-4,000 miles a year) as well as the rear tire, so I'm pondering finding a used road bike for the trainer this year. Problem is, I'm short - 5'5" - and its hard to find a working road bike that's the proper size.

I'm thinking instead that it might be MUCH simpler to find a used mountain bike and put slicks on it and slap on some SPDs for the drainer. What do you all think of that?

Have to agree with 'Kido.  It's going to be way cheaper to get a new tire and other things than getting a new bike.  How much do you really ride on the trainer in the winter?  You have a bike that you like and that fits you, so it makes more sense to use that one and fix as needed.  Sooner or later you'll have to replace all those things anyway.  I wouldn't care if the miles came from the trainer or the road, the bike is getting used.

Hahaha my mom used to do that all the time. I was like `Mom, I don't need the money.' but she wouldn't take it back. Gotta love moms.

I love my mom. When I was leaving for the trip to OKC, she gave me several packs of alcohol wipes. They were for wiping down the hotel TV remote so I wouldn't get H1N1...
