Just got done with a ride and I think the saying on a bike should be "what goes down must come up". Those hills kicked my butt today. I'm with you. I am in the suburbs of Kansas City, on the Kansas side, and everyone always laughs thinking its flat around here until they come in town for a race and see it for themselves. The entire IMFL has 150 feet of elevation change over the course of 122 miles, I have that just getting out of my neighborhood. This will be my first at IMFL, and I heard the biggest issue is remembering to get out of aero occassionally to avoid killing your back when its time to stand for the run I dunno about you, but I only plan on riding 112 miles. I spent several years doing nothing but climbing in SD and my aero position still suffers because of it. Iraq is flat, but there are so many turns to do a loop on this small base and so many ruts in the road that I can't go over in aero that I'm not getting as much aero time as I would like right now. All I can do is do what aero I can and then hit the aero hard when I get back home to Florida. |

I guess with the Kansas winds and all the weaving, I add a few "extra" miles onto the distance, hope that won't be the case in FL. Stay safe in the meantime and see you in November. |

I dunno. I'll let you know when I buy it in September... But I'm definitely planning on a new tri bike, with race wheels and a Quarq (spelling?) power meter probably. |

Expert 1139 Austin | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'll be on an 09' P2C Ultegra. Don't know off the top of my head what gearing is on there right now, but I don't plan on changing it. I'd love to get a set of race wheels but may end up just renting from race day wheels based on my collegiate budget. I was thinking disc and an 808 on the front. Or possibly a pair of 808's. Any previous IMFL racers that can give any insight on suitable rim depth? I currently own a Renn disc that I would most likely sell to cover the rentals. |

Expert 1360 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread No fancy bike here. I have an '04 Fuji Aloha. don't know what the gear set is, but it is a pretty small gear set on the back and big on the front so it should be good for flat Florida (not so great for where a live which is hilly). I don't have race wheels and definitely won't be buying any before the race. I'm not a fast cyclist (it'll probably take me 6:45-7:15 to finish the bike, so I don't think it is worth it). Might rent a pair, just don't think the small amount of time i would gain from it would be worth the money for me. I would like to buy a new tri bike, and I did think seriously about it, but I don't have an extra $3000 sitting around to pay for it. Also, after IM, DH and I are going to start trying to have a family and I probably won't seriously be doing tris for a few years anyway (maybe the odd sprint). When I can get back into it, I will buy a new bike then. |

Veteran 136 Panama City Beach | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I rode this weekend and we may not have the hills in PCB but we got the wind!! The wind was sooo gusty this weekend it knocked me into traffic numerous times. The wind doesn't help when climbing over the bridge ever...sand and grit hitting you in the face...the wind off the gulf was brutal. In regards to wheels, I don't get fancy...what you see on the bike is what you get. I'm still riding my Ritchey wheels and Bontrager tires...may need new tires, even rims, by the time IM comes...but I won't be spending much...I want to upgrade bikes eventually and don't plan on putting much into this Cervelo... |

New user 101 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I raced IMFL in 2009. My wheel set up was an 808 rear and 404 front (606 if you will). This worked well for me but I could have gone for a 1080 rear and 808 front. The winds are enough that, personally, I would not want a disk. Especially on the ride out of transition to the turn towards the bridge and then the same section coming back in. You're basically on the beach in this section and the cross winds can be bad. |

FWIW, I raced in '09 with a disc and didn't have a single issue with the wind. Steady the entire 112. I'm 160 pounds, so maybe someone considerably lighter could have an issue. |

Mostly high 60s and low 70s. Actually got hot on the run yesterday. Hope the weather stays as I am doing an organized pay ride this weekend (62 miles with a 5k run afterwards). |

New user 11 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Hi everyone. Time for me to stop lurking and start participating, especially as you are starting to make me feel guilty that I have only spent about 1hr on the bike (trainer) this year. In my defense I ran the Goofy challenge in January and I have been training for the Pittsburgh Marathon in May, and my swimming is pretty regular. I will probably start getting on the bike regularly in April. I plan to ride my Cervelo P2C, with the stock wheels (Shimano R-500s if I remember correctly). I can definitely see the appeal of renting/buying something with a bigger rim, but I just don't think that is the route I want to go. I do have a quick question. I thought that I had Speedplay Zeros on my road bike when I bought my tri bike. This has been in the back of my mind for a while so I finally got around to checking and it turns out that they are Speedplay LightActions. I have been using both sets of cleats on both pedals. The Speedplay website says that the two systems are not compatible and should not be used together. Does anyone have an opinion (risks, damage that might have occurred, etc.)? Either way, time to visit the local bike store to get a new set of Zeros and an extra set of cleats (3 pairs of shoes now...) John |

It's literally been five years since I even THOUGHT about doing any gear research..and there's so much more out there it's overwhelming! Bike brands that didn't even EXIST the last time I bought a bike... I know I just need to go ride some bikes, but I'm going to be short on time and would really like to at least have a ballpark list by the time I go to buy. You know, I want to know what frame options are out there and what components are making the rounds. And don't even get me started on the race wheels...too many options!!!! *sigh* I foresee many internet search hours in my future. |

Veteran 287 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Woohoo, first day of spring ! Training is going super this year. I have my power where I want it right now and i feel really strong. I wanted to get fast during the pre season and I'm right on target on power and my VO2 max is higher then it's ever been . So far so good. Now finally time to get outside ! Next FTP test will be outside . I've been reading a lot of race reports on this race and I'm getting excited ! I need to be patient though and stick to my plan . Overtraining right now being so far from the race would be really stoooopid thing to do. It won't make me faster come race day. That is for sure. I am not drinking that kool aid. Now for the stead of choice on race day: Cervelo P2C with Zipps 808 tubular with power tap. Compact. I will have 11/23 cassette come race day. I want to tweak my fit for Florida though. I think when I bought the bike I was told a '54 would be best for me but at 5"6 I think it's too big for me. So hopefully I will find a good fitter to adjust it a bit. Plane ticks are bought and I have a location in mind for lodging. Happy Spring everybody ! Nathaliey |

Expert 1139 Austin | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I've got a countdown to IMFL on my desktop so it's a constant reminder. Just got back from a week of skiing (snowboarding) in New Mexico. While I didn't get in any SBR last week I'm still feeling a bit sore from the different muscles used for snowboarding and all the sore spots that I landed on when wiping out multiple times. Also I just got a new toy thanks to "mom and dad inc." A Garmin 705! Planning on going out for a ride tomorrow morning before class. First tri of the season is in six days also, should be fun. |
