pga_mike - 2010-09-29 3:45 PM Anyone else having trouble just maintaining and not jumping to 15 hr/wk right now?

I am starting to work on my run a little and increasing my long rides on the bike before winter comes.  Really looking forward to logging some major hours on the indoor trainer.

I did a Half Ironman distance race on August 1, I took a few weeks off and decided to sign up for a marathon (what was I thinking?!).  In any case, I am doing a lot of running, the race is on Halloween day.

I just started swimming last week and lifted weights which injured my shoulder, not sure which one injured it.  My stroke technique is out the door!  I didn't go to masters swim for over a month and a half.  I have to almost start over again.  I took some Advil and rested it and went swimming again last night and it felt much better.

Good luck to Mike and everyone getting back into the groove!  Smile

Shermbelle - 2010-09-28 2:48 PM Wow, how far I have fallen. Did my first LT run workout in a few years today. My LT pace was slower than my former marathon pace. Glad we have 8 months left, gonna need everyday of it to get to where I want.

WOW ONLY 8 MONTHS ALREADY??!!?! Time is flying by! I think it will go faster the second time.

Is anybody planning on running the Arizona RNR Marathon in January?

I am doing PF Chang's RNR Mary in Phx in January.  Then Sedoan two weeks later as a (recovery)rested run.

JERRY! Nice to see you on  here!

I'll probably do RnR AZ too (if Jerry does it)...

Big "E"azy!  We will both be doing RNR and CDA - only difference is that my coke-zero plan means I will have to enjoy the course a bit longer than you!

mango6383 - 2010-09-29 6:00 PM So leave it to me to let triathlon dictate our vacation schedule, but I'm thinking of taking two weeks off from work this fall or winter.  Possibilities include over Thanksgiving, or in early to mid-January.  Would the latter end up interfering with training too much?  It's my first IM, but I'm coming from a distance-running background, and will be running the Portland Marathon in a week and a half.  I'm hoping to take some time off from serious training for the rest of October, then gun it up again in November.

If I took that approach, how harmful would it be to take half of January off from training completely?  I haven't decided on a specific training plan yet, but I'm guessing something along the lines of 20-30 weeks, which the vacation would happen with 25ish weeks to go.

Thoughts?

I am using one of the 20 week BT plans and therefore do not even start training for CDA till Feb.  I also take the stance that a well rested body is least likely to be an injured body and the mental break of taking half of January off will help you on those grueling days when you start feeling burnout.  but I would hope a few others could provide you a better feel of how taking Jan or Dec time off will effect your race.

Just because your plan hasn't started doesn't mean you can't train.  I think Jorge's winter cycling thing is 12 weeks, which would fit into that timespan perfectly, with a little rest buffer.

I can't wait to cross the finish line at CDA, but crossing the finish line with my 10 year daughter today for her first 5k was pretty awesome.  She says she hates running, but decided last night to do the race with us.  34:31 isn't too shabby for someone who's never ran more than a mile.

That's awesome, and an impressive time for a first timer. I am not sure how my kids will respond to racing when they get older. My boys are almost 5 and 2 and especially the 5 yr old has been on many "trips" to races. Hopefully he won't despise them when he gets older.

1st week of my marathon training program in the books. Two weeks of consistent running and the improvements are dramatic already. Still a long way from where I want to be but WOW, this consistent stuff actually pays off Wink

Things have been off and on here. I had to nix my Nov marathon plan, but it's no big deal. I am enjoying my new bike and had a very good but challenging ride yesterday. Need to do those more. I signed up for a January century so that will help motivate me to be on the bike. I also have been very diligent with nutrition logging and tracking and have lost some weight in the past couple of weeks and it feels so good and motivates me to stay strong with it. I can tell in my running as my speeds are easier to get to, and that's always nice. Must. Stay. Diligent. and must get back in the pool!

Nice job!

I am back into marathon mode myself, looking to run Seattle Marathon on 11/28.  I am also GOING TO do Jorge's winter cycling program.  I keep saying that, because I have always struggled at getting on the trainer.   Swimming has been nil, but probably start back up in december, so that I have a little fitness going into January and starting to train more consistently.

but until 11/28, I will be running, running, and running, shooting for that 3:10

I'm running my first marathon in 2 weeks.   I haven't swam in 2 months and have biked very little.  The first 3 weeks of P90X were great, but I have not been motivated to get out of bed since recovery week.  My nutrition is slipping and I've gained 5 pounds.  Crap.

Yup!  I more just want to qualify   Even if I do, I'm not sure if I will go, because it is only 2 months away from CDA.  I ran a 3:15 at Seattle Marathon last year, but haven't been able to run very much this year due to some injuries. . but feeling good now, and back at it!

Depending on which source you look at, bike is anywhere from 2600 to 3100ft per loop. All I've seen on the run is 600ft per loop, with only one hill that is hard.

Man I'd sign up for the Eugene Marathon if you're that close to qualifying.  It's a much easier course than Seattle.  But I think it's also very close to the Coeur d'Alene race date.

It would be  a two year qualifier. If I remember, Oct.1 - Mar.1 gets you this coming year and the year after, unless they have changed in the last few years since I have been there.

I'm running a marathon this weekend and then another one at the end of the month (it all seemed like a good idea 12 weeks ago).  Once I get this foolishness out of the way I plan to take a few weeks off/easy.  Then it will be time to start rebuilding my bike and swim fitness.

You might as well just run another one a month or two later, and get marathon maniac status Wink

Correct.  If you do a BQ time after late September/early October 2010, then that time will get you into the 2011 Boston marathon or the 2012 one, but not both.  I'm hoping to qualify in New York next month and use that for the 2012 race.

If you qualify for Boston in late November, it may be sold out for 2011 anyhow.  But your qualifing time will be good for 2012 also.

Wow, I haven't been on this thread since the day before CDA a few months ago. I needed a break from all of the Ironman talk and training!! .

I'm back and ready to be obsessive once again. Amazing my training plan is going to get back to it in only 2 months...geesh.

As normal, looks like T in Liberty never has a break in the training plan - good work!
