Luckily he is training for the NYC marathon and knows allll about it. Has anyone ever used compression socks/sleeves? Love them! I thought at first they were BS, but I reluctantly bought a pair to of Zoots for recovery and to wear towork and I think they have helped tremendously. I don't get as sore and I also feel like I can push myself harder/longer on the run... I have never actually worn them on a long run/workout before though Edited by laurak11 2011-01-06 4:35 AM |

Has anyone ever used compression socks/sleeves? I have both, plus a pair of zoot compression tights. Depending on the run, i wear one of them after all my mid to long runs. I don't know if i'm any less sore for my next run, but I love the way they feel when i have them on. I don't wear them on the run -way too hot. |

Underwater MP3 player. No kidding, 1 GB hard drive, completely waterproof and waterproof earplugs. Hooks to the back of your google strap (about the same size as an Ipod Nano) My dad got my step-mom one of the Finis SwiMP3 players for Christmas. Haven't heard what she thinks of it. Its the ones that aren't "headphones," but actually play through your cheekbone. I've heard good things about them in the past. Music would make swimming soooo much better!! Yesterday I realized how much music is necessary on the treadmill. I forgot my headphones. Needless to say Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer," though a cool song, doesn't get me as pumped to run as my normal rotation of Metallica and Led Zeppelin among others! |

Luckily he is training for the NYC marathon and knows allll about it. Has anyone ever used compression socks/sleeves? Interested to know what the doc says to get rid of shin splints. I occasionally get them (its usually when I ramp up my running volume to quickly or too much time on the treadmill) and the only way I know that helps is not to run - which seems counterproductive. He basically said all the typical stuff: rest, ice and stretch. Try to not run as much on the treadmill. I asked about compression socks, which he said may help. Also, the med student and nurse were both runners and said walking on your heels sometimes helps strengthen and stretch out those muscles. |

How old are the shoes? They aren't that old. Its been happening for some time. In my old shoes when they were in need of replacement and in these shoes when they were brand new. From what I've noticed its only when I'm on the TM. Today its been tight all day just walking around the office. Your gait probably changes a little since you're only moving up/down on the treadmill instead of forward-up/down. Any chance your foot is slapping the tread? Could also be the "sponginess" of the TM that creates more ankle flex => shin pain. Pretty consistent on the TM? If so, try running near the front or rear roller instead of half-way between and see if that makes a difference (try it both at the front and rear). Other than that, I got nuthin'.... Yea, I figured it was something with my gait, but was hoping it wasn't since it'd be rather difficult to change. I'll try changing my spot on the treadmill to see if that helps. I do have an appointment with my Doc in a couple hours for something else. I was planning on asking him, just wanted some ideas so I didn't sound like a moron. Just a thought, I was having seriouse pain in my right hip and both knees when running anything over 8 miles. Went to a running store to see about getting custom fitted shoes (on the recomondation of a friend). When I got there, the actually video taped me running on a TM, then we watched it in slow motion to see what was causing my problems. Corrective shoes fixed it. Point is almost every cheap digital camera has the video option. Set it up, run, then watch it see if your gait looks funny? May not find anything, but then again, it may be really obvious once you see yourself. I'm planning on heading over to runner's roost to do this video tape thing before I officially start my training in Feb. I don't have any pain but I don't want any once I do start. Great idea. |

Share your favorite workout songs with me please. I'm too into classic rock! Oh boy, quite the question. I typically listen to Pandora, which is AWESOME for those that haven't tried it, on my Blackberry (when I remember my earbuds). Usually its on grunge playing music like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Audioslave, Rage Against the Machine, etc. Classic rock is another favorite. Led Zeppelin is my favorite band everrrrr. Metallica is frequently on and never fails to pump me up. When the mood strikes I'll listen to some Eminem, Jay-Z, 2pac and Notorious B.I.G. As you can see I listen to very little "current" music as I think most of it is pretty much garbage. |

If you're running in hooker boots or heels I'd be very impressed!! I'm guessing clear heels a la Chris Rock, Never Scared. If you guys haven't watched Chris Rock's stand up I strongly suggest doing so. It is the funniest stuff I have ever seen. You might think he's vulgar, but he's hilarious and tells it like it is. Expert 1007 Missouri | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group 2011 - CLOSED OK – trying to get caught up there… Lynne – sorry you’ve got the blues. I get them to some extent this time every year – probably one of the reasons my workouts stunk so much last week. If there’s anything we can do, please don’t hesitate to let us know! Compression socks – I wore them for a while when I was having some issues with posterior tibial tendonitis and my daughter used them for shin splints. I wore them both during runs and afterwards. I know they kept my problem from getting worse (could definitely feel a difference if I forgot them on a run). They helped to support the muscle/tendon in my legs. Workout songs – most of my playlist is songs from the 80’s. Lots of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Poison, Guns’n’Roses – that type of stuff. I’m back on schedule with my workouts (sort of). I had to convince myself to do it, but went down to the basement last night to get in the scheduled speedwork on the TM. It actually went pretty well. I managed to get in 6.25 miles total although I didn’t do my stretching afterwards and my right leg is letting me know about it today! I did skip my swim this morning though. I just can’t seem to drag myself out of bed to go to the gym before the sun comes up. During the spring/summer/fall it’s not an issue, but the winter darkness makes it tough to do. At least it’s not already dark when I get home from work anymore. I’ll try to make up the swim tomorrow night – Fridays at the gym are usually not too crowded, even at this time of the year. |

I'm all over the map... lately lady gaga gets me going, but I love metallica (hero of the day!!), john mellencamp, beyonce, usher, akon...... But honestly for the last month I've been leaving the Ipod @ home when I run and I just listening to the outdoors, my footsteps, breath and heartbeat. Kinda nice. I'm also able to focus more and it helps w/ speedwork, which is why I've probably had my fastest times yet! |

15 | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group 2011 - CLOSED Lynne: I always look at training this way...If I am not doing something today to help me tomorrow, someone else out there is. When I competed in the hammer throw and powerlifting meets, I knew that if I missed a practice or workout for whatever reason, my competition was in the gym or in the circle preparing to beat me! If you are not ready for a full out tri session, maybe you could go to the gym and get a small workout even. I agree with what was posted before, even a simple walk outside to get some fresh air may get your mind into the training mentality. Compression Socks: I am interested in purchasing a pair as well. Is there one brand or type that is better than others? Sleeves vs. Full socks, etc. Do people wear them to bike as well, or mostly just for running? Music: A list of artists in no particular order... Survivor Def Leppard AC/DC Metallica Eminem Rocky Soundtrack Seether-Great Careless Whisper remake The Eagles Miami Vice Soundtrack Kid Rock Katy Perry Pink Bruce Springsteen Billy Joel ABBA I guess that is an interesting list, but you have to find what might work best for you. |
