I was looking at the CP curve graph this morning on Golden Cheetah, and thinking, that's cool, since I've accumulated some data.  Now what the heck is it actually telling me?

The graph shows Power on the Y and Time on the X axis.  What it shows you is a compilation of your best power efforts at every time slice that you've ridden.  It also shows you (via a black line) the trace of your currently selected ride.   You can hit the left mouse button over the chart and see in numbers the power numbers at each time slice for your current ride and best ever in the boxes below the graph.

If memory serves it also calculates your Critical Power from the graph and once you save it will show you your power efforts in each zone.

I love loading up my rides and seeing if I've managed to overwrite any of my best efforts with something I did today.  Small pleasures, I guess.

CP Question and race pacing:

I've got my first race this weekend, an Olympic distance.  How should I pace my bike as a % of CP?

Always give 110%.  Ok, I have no idea - listen to Mark. ;-)

So, I should be able to take my CP curve graph and get my CP for any timeframe.  Right now, my CP at 20m is around 207.  One hour, is around 200.   That's what I'm thinking after studying the graph.  I need to finish reading my training with power book.

Corn, I think riding at 95-105% would kill me for the run.  I still have some base building to do.

Bama, my OLY is this weekend, so no go on a test, but I've got a pretty good idea.  I think the 80-90% sounds about right, I just wanted to verify how hard I should actually push the bike.  That would put me in the 165-170w range, and it's a flat course, so no hills to contend with.  My goal is to have a good run off the bike this time.  I've always blown up on the run.

I agree. But I think I'm going to try it anyway.  I'm not really prepared for my race this weekend so it's not like I've got a lot to loose.  I'm going to shoot for around 90-95% and then try to hold my HM pace on the run.  I don't expect this to go well but what the heck I'm either going to have a great race or a great learning experience.  On second thought, since I'm not feeling prepared maybe I should be more conservative... nah, that's no fun!  Laughing

i love this strategy! I think we can always go harder on race day than we think. For my part, im posting from my ortho's office. This knee pain has gotten pretty bad. Havent worked out in a week. So i though I'd get it checked out to confirm ITBS or something else.

That sucks but hopefully they can tell you what's wrong and get you on track to be better quickly.

My bad, the date didn't even register with me.

I couldn't put down a decent run after an Oly bike split at 95 to 105%.  I think the most I could hold in an Olympic is 90 to 95 %.  Unless it's been awhile since testing.

Have you signed up?  It sold out last year.

Keep talking.

Signed and paid. I think all four of us are set to go to this one - should be fun!

And I'm much better at smack talk than actually backing it up.  It's a gift. Cool  So basically I'll yammer all summer, you'll kick my a**, and I'll buy you a beer after.

Maybe I can kick out the wife and kids.  That way everyone can bunk at my house.

The course this weekend is brutally hilly for both the bike and the run.  I rode the course last weekend and part of it the weekend before.  With all the rolling hills I have a hard time keeping my power down.  I try not to surge up the hills but I'm still pushing 125% on the way up.  I'll freely admit this might not be the best plan.  However, I feel like try to race comfortably and I don't push myself enough.  I feel that by expecting it to be painful going in there is a better chance that I'll push myself to hang on instead of easing up like I normally do.

I've got popcorn.

It's a race for the ages. Mentor vs. Mentee. Old fart vs. Young Buck. Swimmer vs. Runner. This shall be good.

I'm going to go ahead and sit back and watch this unfold. Should be interesting come Rocketman. And if I build well, hopefully I'll have a good race this year and be somewhat competitive!

Who wants to help me taper for my 5k swim?

Mon - nada
Tues - 5mi run, 3500yrds in the pool
Wed - 4000yrds in the pool

Now, here's the rest of the week:
Thurs - 5-6mi run
Fri - dunno
Sat - travel to race, easy easy swim in the bay
Sun - RACE

So, what should Fri be? I was thinking something along the lines of an EASY 2000ish yrds or a simple 5mi run.

I have no idea...

I will be doing a 1000yd fast swim.  Short enough not to cause fatigue that will last, but hard enough to keep the muscles working.  Just remember that your training is in the can.  Done.  Finito.  The 7k you've done this week won't be helping you this weekend.  Nothing you do Friday will, either - other than some confidence boosting.  Get sharp.  Get fresh.

Thanks for the offer, but I already have plans.  I'm bringing the family and we're going to hit the rocket museum the rest of the day.  I'd certainly be up for a dinner with everyone, though.

Looks like a triple whammy! ITBS, Tendonitis, and a bone spur on the kneecap that is rubbing against some other piece of bone. Start PT tomorrow morning. Also got a script for Mobic. Good anti-inflammatory. This is really screwing up my season. I have a half mary scheduled this weekend (DNS for me) and sprints and an OLY sceduled for the following 3 straight weekends.

Oh my end today, ARG.

Today was a fast day in the pool. No drag suit - I put the good one on. Decided to rewrite my PRs for 100 and 200yds. From a push, open turns:

1:00.8 100yds
2:15.9 200yds

I really should have done a proper block start and flip turns for the 100. Coulda been sub minute so easy. FAIL. :wall:

The 200 was probably even worse. Too much of a time drop between those two times. Pretty poor effort given the 100 time. FAIL. :bag:

Next time around not trying to set new PRs by the same technique as the last records. Balls to the wall next time around - live and learn.

Finished out the day with an easy 6:30 500yd and 5x100 on 1:30 holding 1:12-1:14.  At least I finished the workout out fairly well.

Follow the PT and do what the doctor orders, as hard as it is.  You'll get back to it faster and avoid re-injury.  Keep us posted on the PT progress.

Says the person about to do an Olympic swim and hasn't seen a pool in two weeks.  I'm close to freaking out about it, especially since i was seeing some decent progress in the pool.

Yikes. Take it easy and get better. You still have the back half of the season

I'm packing the harpoon. You're towing my butt this weekend

I couldn't put down a decent run after an Oly bike split at 95 to 105%.  I think the most I could hold in an Olympic is 90 to 95 %.  Unless it's been awhile since testing.

Follow the PT and do what the doctor orders, as hard as it is.  You'll get back to it faster and avoid re-injury.  Keep us posted on the PT progress.

Ouch.  Glad to hear you went to the doc for a proper check.  Stay the course and heal up right.  Don't get any crazy ideas while rehabing.

Injury rehab and avoidance is top priority - take care of that leg!  You can get back quick with some proper rehab.  Keep us updated!

A agree, horrible performance.  You should be a ashamed of yourself... Wink

No kidding.  That's just unacceptable...
