jarvy01 - 2013-05-16 1:01 PM She says she ought to see a nutritionist but she also thinks she consumes enough calories (similar to Gwen Jorgensen)....RD for macro profile. I was just surprised by her food log. It is more in line with the way I used to eat/fuel.

She thinks based on nothing but her opinion.

As a counter point here's Chrissie Wellington typical day:

My daily meals

I have two breakfasts: One when I wake up, about 45 minutes before my first session, which is light and easy to digest. I have a couple of rice cakes or a frozen banana (simply because I like the taste and texture when they are frozen) with sunflower butter and honey on top, washed down with water and an oversized cup of joe. Decaf is not in my vocabulary.

After my first training session I have my second breakfast; this is either hot oatmeal with another grain (like spelt/buckwheat/quinoa) mixed in, with honey on top, or a huge bowl of raw oats, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, coconut and plain yogurt all mixed together.

My choice depends on whether I am running later in the day. If so, I chose the former, slightly lower fiber option to avoid the probably of GI distress.

After my next session I have lunch, which is either a baked potato, wholegrain bread/wraps or brown rice with a salad and some tuna, sliced meats, eggs or pulses (such as chick peas). I finish it up with a bigger than average bowl of cereal and some nuts or fruit as a snack.

For dinner I have either poultry or fish (I tend to choose oily fish to maximize my omega-3 intake). I have red meat once a week, to ensure I get enough iron. I also love liver and kidneys. Horse was the red meat of choice in Switzerland. Ostrich in South Africa.

On the side I have roasted/steamed/stir fried veggies or a salad and a big pile of grains such as quinoa, buckwheat, rice, wholegrain pasta, or a large sweet potato.

The extras

Dessert is always a bowl of wholegrain cereal and frozen berries. I put olive oil on everything. Even oatmeal.

I don't deprive myself of any foods. Nothing is "naughty" - it is just eaten in moderation. A few pieces of dark chocolate a day definitely doesn't do me any harm, and as for pizza -- well, I can still squeeze one of those in!

During the day I drink either plain water or water with electrolytes, and keep an eagle eye on the color of my urine to ensure I am hydrated.

So I got an update to my original fitting. Now looking back that guy really didn't do a great job I don't think. So the original fitter has left the LBS so I got another one of the FIST certified guys. Much older guy and loves what he does. So this time we actually started with the cleats and went up from there. Luckily my cleats were pretty close. We had to adjust the right one just a bit which could explain the calf fatigue I have on longer rides. Next was Knee/Hip angle. I was at 134 which I found out is pretty narrow for someone my height. So we went up on the saddle and now I am at 141. Now I don't feel scrunched when my leg comes up. Power should be up he said as well with that change. So from the hip down felt great now it was on to upper body comfort. We kept the front-end the same to see about being more aggressive. I went out for quick 5-10 minute ride and my neck hurt trying to keep a good sight line. He then brought up the pads 1cm and got me back to the 10% drop FIST recommends and I was feeling good there. He also adjusted the elbow pads and where they fit and got it under a little more meat of the forearm. He also noticed that I was scrunched in the shoulders and moved it as far wide as the bar would allow. He said that should end up being more comfortable and allow for better breathing. All-in-all I am much happier. Don't know if it was the saddle switch or just a bad fitting.

Probably a little of both.  Sounds like a bad original fit though if there was that much change.

Sorry I have been out the past few days...I was finished up final exams and didn't get much training done. So to celebrate after my last one this morning, I went on a bike ride. 10 minutes in, I pick up too much speed going around a corner and the bike came right out from under me. I think my pedal hit the pavement. No I have a huge gash in my hand, but more importantly, the side of my saddle is ripped! Along with various other scratches on the gears, hood, and handlebars. This makes me sad, since I just got the bike a month ago

At least everything still works properly. Strangely, when I woke up this morning, I had the sense that I was going to get into some kind of accident. I am just glad it wasn't a car accident or something fatal. Anyways, life goes on.

Glad you're (mostly) ok.  I would bring the bike into the shop for a quick once over just to make sure everything is ok.  Sometimes you can do damage that isn't visible.

x2 I did the same last year on my old bike and has to go get things adjusted and had them check it out for unseen damage.

Yea I thought that was a big change but I am glad I went back and they include adjustments. They just switched their policy to only adjust within 90 days. No more lifetime but I got grandfathered I guess. BTW is RETUL fitting worth the extra money?

It depends.  Retul is essentially a name brand for motion capture, computer measured fitting.  There are other computer based fitting programs such as dart fish that can do something similar.  Everyone should have their bike properly fit, a computer based motion capture fit will maybe give you an extra 1 or 2 %.  But if you have a good fitter your going to get that anyway.

All the good fitters around here are $250ish.  Retul, Serrotta, Guru DFU, et al.

Larkin, if you're looking for another fitter and don't mind driving up to Montgomery County, you might try Smiley El Abd.  He has a wonderful reputation around here, and is the guy I'm going to go to for my next fit.  It is not his day job, but he is a certified fitter and has long years of experience both fitting it and building custom bikes.  The DC Tri Club had a long thread of rave reviews about him here:  http://www.dctriclub.org/forum/messages.cfm?tid=B1849BED-D84B-AA78-A00D66477DDCBDED

I don't know how much he charges, but you'd be assured of getting a great fit from someone who really knows what he's doing.

Biking to work in 90% of Houston = a 90% chance of death or dismemberment.

So the athlete's dinner.  Kinda cool.  Food was decent.  Mashed potatoes, roast beef, panzanella salad, some sort of cheesy pasta, chocolate cake and apple pie.  Stayed clear of all thing fiberous.

Found a few friends to chill with.  We were snarky all night long.  It was fun.  Mike Reilly is pretty cool and charismatic.  He called up the oldest female competitor who was in her mid 70s.  He asked her when she got into tris (09) and what made her want to do them and her answer was (in my best granny voice) "Well I'm a bit crazy."  She was awesome.  Had a HUGE Mdot tattoo on her calf.

Downer of the night was the typical blinged out Texas woman from the Woodlands who addressed the crowd.  Gold sparkly cowboy hat, rhinestone denim jacket, etc.  Taught everyone from out of town how to say "Yeeeeehaaaaaawwwwww."  Ugh.  No pics.

Water temp at 9 yesterday was 75, it was 80+ by 3.

My upper body was sore and stiff when I woke up this morning so I hit the snooze button a few too many times.  I never do that. The fly really did a number on me yesterday.  1:15 tempo run is pushed off until later this afternoon.  It looks like weather is going to be perfect on Sunday for my long ride so I hope to be able to do the entire thing on the roads.

Nice easy session in the pool this morning, and I may squeeze in a light bike or run later on today.  Real excited about Sunday.

Two hour ride this morning outside. 49 degrees when I started and a blazing 56 at the end. It was definitely cold in sport. The worst part however was that on the way out there was zero wind and that's not just perception I have all the yards with flags in them set to memory and check them. On the way back the head wind was brutal. There's a section that's really flat where I do a 3 mile interval on a lot of rides and usually I can maintain a speed of about 23 for most of it with a cadence of about 100. I was three gears lower with a cadence of 80 barely maintaining 16.5 MPH. There's just something about that type of wind that makes it worse than a big hill with the wind putting resistance into your legs.

I should have totally realized that the BT re-design was coming but after 8 years of using the same design, at the moment I'm a bit lost.

Clever Training is also offering the same sale on the 910XT. Too bad you can't add the DC Rainmaker discount on top of that. Also too bad I bought my 910XT a couple weeks ago.

Have a 3 hour bike ride beginning at around 430A....a lacrosse tournament (girls) and stuff, so I may not get a chance to post tomorrow. As such, I wanted to get out another good luck to Matt, Larkin and Scott. (I don't think I am missing anyone...if I am I apologize) I am very excited to hear how y'all (like that?) do and am sending good vibes your way. I will be tracking in one hand and videotaping in another.

Colleen - good to hear you crashed after your last final....and that you are okay of course.

I plan to practice OWS on Sunday. Found out the water temp is 49-52. So, I bought a neoprene cap, socks and gloves. My next race is in 3 weeks. I don't imagine the water is going to get that much warmer up here by then. Uggg.

Question about saddles:

How much discomfort should I just HTFU and deal with and at what point should I look for something else? I rode the stock saddle for a couple of months, couldn't get comfortable on it, and switched to a Cobb vflow. I've been riding that for 2-3 months now and it's still not comfortable for me (i.e. it's killing the area where my left leg meets my pelvis to the point where it's still sore to the touch a full day later). Seat discomfort seems to be my biggest limiter on riding time/distance at this point and I can't imagine another 3-4 hours of the discomfort I was feeling toward the end of my ride last night. Do I just need more T.I.T.S.?
