Great Race. Excellent first marathon! Very Impressive.

Funny how you said you almost got on the phone to cancel the January race. You can't base those decisions on how you feel 30 minutes after a race, lol.

Take some time and enjoy a week or more of downtime to recover. You've earned it.

Nate,

I re-read your report. Weird how you said you couldn't find the 8:35 group. Are you sure there was an 8:35 group? If I read you correctly, you were running 8:37 at 13 miles, so you should have been only around 25 to 30 seconds back from that pace group. They should have been in sight. An 8:30 pace group would have been about a minute and a half ahead of you and you may or may not have been able to pick them out.

They had a group at 8:35 for a 3:45 marathon. I think they weren't running true to pace. After the half you get on a long straight away. There is a little pitch in the road but I should have been able to see the pacer sign from at least a 1/4 mile if not more, and my surge I should have seen them or caught them. I didn't ask anyone after the race but I suspect they run faster. I couldn't see them after the first 2 miles and I was running 8:36 so I should have guessed they were ahead of schedule.

I took Monday and Tuesday off. Tuesday I got a 90 minute massage and I have been feeling great since. I went out for 5 yesterday, and will run again on Friday and then a medium long run this weekend (8-13) depending on what by buddy is doing. He is training for a race in December and I may try to keep him company for a few easy miles. Next week I will start regular training. I discussed with a few marathoners in my run club and they thought this was fine. I feel great but I also worry about giving my body enough time to recover. I think at 40 we have a double edge sword, longer to recover, and we lose fitness faster. With this week as a light one. I will have 6 weeks and a taper for run disney half and full. My wife wants a PR for her Disney half which means I will need to run at least a 1:54 for the half, but I am guess she wants better than a 20 second PR. I have no expectations for the full other than for it to not take me all day.

have to plan for next season soon too...

Hit 1000 miles running for the year. One of my goals for this year.

Nice job!

That's a goal I have not yet achieved.

Maybe next year.

I raced my first marathon this weekend. I trained using the BAA marathon level 1 plan for most of the season and then switched to level 2 after triathlon was done. My goal was to break 4 hours, and I structured the intervals based on a 3:45 marathon to ensure I was successful. My peak week was 46 miles but that was due to pushing a long run to a Monday such that I had two runs. Otherwise I would have had 40 miles during my heavy training weeks.

Congrats, Nate! Great race! Sorry I'm just getting around to this now. The group seemed to largely have gone dead and I wasn't all that active either. I've started to get my training going a couple times and have been derailed. This last one was a flu bug that hit me fairly hard and last night was the first time I've done anything in a month.

Anyway, nice job on your first full marathon. Good luck at Disney!

Once you caught your breath, it occurred to you that finishing even a short triathlon might be harder than you thought. After a few "laps" you thought, "I can't believe I'm so out of shape."
