One week today until my race. Dress rehearsals today (only half the swim and half the run though). Felt ok but it’s going to be tough to double the run on race day!

How’s everyone doing?

Swam the last two mornings. Yesterday did 28 x 50s critical pace (haven't done a time trial for awhile but mine was around :50). Then did a 500 and some backstroke 25 yd sprints. Overall got in about 2400 yds.

This morning did some stroke work then did 10 x 100 critical pace (I was hitting 1:45s). If you missed your time on one you had to sit one out but I managed to go all the way through. Then we rested, then did 10 more ??. Prob got in around 3k yards.

Yes, the land of no covid is no more, as the rest of the world moves on with life we are back in the same situation we were in 18 months ago. Nothing has changed, except the virus, as you all know is now more transmissible.

The Bullfrog family is ok, no one we know has the 'rona, or is a close contact. But I am worried about what the next few months hold. As of our latest update we're over 100 cases now, and when you look at what has happened across Australia over the last few months I can't see how the genie gets put back in the bottle from this point. We could be locked away for the rest of the year, like the New South Wales is talking about doing. None of the so called experts in the media are predicting less than another 4 weeks minimum. Hopefully we get very, very lucky and can get out of this. But the odds can not good.

Fortunately my business is a support industry for food production. So I'm in as a secure position as can be (other than government service that is), we're essential so are able to work to a degree. But we're a single income family at the moment. So the stress level is huge. Who knows what is going to happen.

On the plus side, I had 3 hours on zwift and 90 minutes running last week for 4.5 hours total. So that's ok. Lots of zwifting opportunities ahead. And lockdown is good for weight loss (no takeaways for us) Hopefully I will come out of this a few lbs lighter and a bit fitter.

Ugh, Andrew, I’m so sorry about that. I’ve seen your Strava workouts - maybe I’ll see you on Zwift one of these days!

Hey all, sorry I haven’t posted any workouts lately, I’m in peak weeks and every minute of the day is taken (and I’m supposed to be on vacation). Yesterday was supposed to be IM Mont Tremblant.. things happen for a reason. I would not have been nearly as prepared as I should be for that race with all the training interruptions over the past eight months. I’m two weeks into my month vacation and the hammer came down on training - meaning I’m actually following my plan. Yesterday was a 2:30 run and Saturday was a 5:30 or which I rode outside for 3 hours of it. In the first three miles I blew a flat. I changed it out within 5 minutes or so but only had one CO2 cartridge (I used the other one at camp) and my inflator adapter blew its rubber gasket when I was using it. Long story short I couldn’t get all the air in but enough I could ride home. I saved the part and managed to put it back together there, grab two more cartridges and another spare tube and out the door I went again. It was a “feels like” temp of 94 degrees. I was loaded up with water and nutrition and even had a Camelback on but forgot sunscreen. After three hours I bailed and went on the trainer as I was cooked and crispy. Ouch.
Today is a blessed rest day. The kids start school this week so I’ll be running around with them likely, getting last minute stuff.

Question. Why is it when you finally get a rest day and you’re on vacation you can only sleep for 5.5 hours? No? Just me? I’d love some serious sleep hours right now.

Andrew, sorry to hear you guys are in lockdown again. We've gone back to masks pretty much everywhere in the city but certainly have many more cases than you guys do there, so should probably be doing more. Good luck with everything!

Jenn, nice work on the ride. Sounds like you overcame the flat tire - it would've taken me ages to change one of those (especially my back tire, I'm so bad at getting it back on the bike). Hope you didn't burn too bad!

I took yesterday off...for no good reason except laziness, really. Got a 3 mile run in this morning. Legs were super sore for some reason. Gonna try again tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about that Andrew, this sh*t is not going away anytime soon, is it? Here we are slowly getting back to some kind of normality but for how long? I fear the next wave is only around the corner.

Enjoy your vacation Jenn! I guess you need a few days to unwind before you can sleep more. When’s the race?

Weather forecast for my race is rain and wind. Any tips for racing in bad weather?

My main tip for racing in bad weather is don't focus on it. It's all a state of mind. I saw this quote and had to find it again, but it's "There's no such thing as good weather, or bad weather. There's just weather and your attitude towards it." ~ Louise Hay
I am definitely guilty of feeling negative towards weather but find that when I don't focus on it it doesn't get to me as much.
Also, for rain I would make sure to wear a hat or visor to keep the water out of your face a bit.

Thanks Nicole, makes a lot of sense. In my business (waterproof clothing for golfers) we often say there is no bad weather, only bad clothing. I think I am ok with it. Thanks for the visor idea tip. On the bike you mean?

Haha yes! I love that.

Probably harder on the bike with the helmet, unless you can fit something underneath, but definitely for the run.

I was thinking about wearing my sunglasses (with interchangeable lenses, clear ones, obviously) for both the bike and the run. I don’t think rain in the face is a problem, but in the eyes, yes.

I guess it will be cold coming out of the swim so I am planning on wearing a windbreaker or a rain jacket for the bike. I will keep my running shoes and socks in a plastic bag so they are not soaked even before I start running. It may take a few extra seconds in T2 but am not too worried about losing time in transition for this race (normally that’s what I do best) as it’s my first oly and I am thinking it may be a good opportunity to catch my breath if I take my time in transition.

What else should I think about?

@Nathalie:

I think you have the right plan for weather, you don't want to get too cold (ask @Jenn, IIRC).  The transition times matter less in an Oly, so just be efficient and not whip through it.

I've played golf in 35* F and rain before...you're right - if you have the right gear it's not too bad.

It will be crazy to finally meet you! Let me know when you're planning on coming!

Got an hour in on the bike this morning and spent most of the day running kids all over the place. My oldest is doing a Health Sciences Academy at a nearby school for half days for the next two years (he’s interested in the medical field) and today was the first day. Our school dropped the ball and decided they wouldn’t provide transportation so my last two weeks of vacation will be spent getting him used to driving to a different town and figuring out city bus schedules and how to get there. For the moment we’re driving. Anyway. After dropping the kids at volleyball practice I headed to swim and decided to add on to my plan and managed 4,300 yards (the main set was 3,000 straight) which I wanted to do a few times before the race. One more weekend of high volume on the bike and run and I get to join Nathalie in the world of taper craziness ( maybe I’ll finally get my house cleaned….). September 18th is coming quick. Eek.

What a fun way to spend your last two weeks of vacation…. Not! Hope it works out for him.

Good job on the swimming! 18th September, I’ll mark my calendar!

Feels a little better today but yesterday I was climbing the walls! So much so that I decided to cut my vacation short and went back to work (from home) 2 days earlier to give me something to do. Took a walk with the dog after work and then a hour in the hot tub with a beer and it feels better today.

Race is tomorrow (Saturday) by the time most of you wake up I’ll be done. Weather forecast has not improved but I am ready for rain and wind!

Ahh Nathalie, one more sleep! Can't wait to hear how it goes!

Jenn I'm so impressed by you. You have a family and a job that requires tons of travel and you still manage to crush your workouts. You're setting a great example for your kids, showing them that fitness and health is really important, and always having big goals. That taper will be sweet.

Also, bad news from me on the IMMD weekend :-( I just realized I'm going to be out of town from Wed-Sunday. If you're still in town past Sunday let me know! I'm so bummed I won't be around to meet up for a beer!
