...last season I happened upon a group called the LUNAChix, sponsored by LUNA bars....they didn't charge for their weekly workouts, and it was really fun! They have a Bay Area cycling group that they do, and there may be more.... http://www.lunachix.net/. I worked out with their Seattle triathlon group. It was totally noncompetitive (well, I worked hard to stick with the leaders, but there was NO pressure to do so)....and it was all levels of fitness etc. They also varied where the workouts were and what they did--some weeks were bike/run bricks, others were OWS/bike bricks etc. They also run lots of clinics. I highly recommend doing something like this, or joining up with a cycling club who train for century rides, etc. Maybe that will help keep you motivated?? What about finding a local tri club as another option?

That is great advice! Thank you. I've been reluctant to join a tri club because honestly, they kind of intimdate me. But I've been *really* reluctant to join a bike club because those people seem really intense. Heh. But if your gruop is fun and noncompetitive, I'll totally give the Bay Area group a try. I definitely need some kind of motivation for getting on the bike -- it's the only event that I really have to force myself to do.

No new training to report here really – just SUPER sore from a couple hours of shoveling yesterday!  Totally feeling it in my shoulders & neck!  Surprisingly my back is fine.  I’m looking forward to spin in the early AM – need to get to bed so I don’t oversleep.  That only seems to happen when I’m really excited to go!

Yanti, thanks for the response on the bike – I feel much better now!  It is also nice to know how to adjust the bike, I really didn’t have a good way the first couple times I went . . . just kept adjusting until I thought it felt right, your suggestion sounds much simpler!  I did buy cleats too – thanks for asking   Luckily the guy knew I was new, or I would have had to go get 'em after your post LOL!

WB Laura - Hope you had a great time in Disney World!!  It's never fun coming back to reality!!

I made the early spinning class today - always questionable at 5:45am!  I liked my shoes & nothing hurt (well, other than my burning quads - but that's all good, LOL!)  I was a little worried about my knees, but they were fine.  It was a little strange not being able to move my foot on the pedal - I didn't realize how many times I usually reposition them to change my leverage . . . I figure it must be better teqnique to keep them locked into one spot, or the clips wouldn't be made hmmm . . . that will take a little getting used to, so I'm glad I bought the shoes now!  Ok, better start working   Have a great day all!

So week one is done for the year. Started at 199.4 this morning was 196.4 so that is ok I know how much weight can change in a day so that isn't a big thing to me but it is good to see the numbers moving in the right way.

So no butt kicking needed here yet

I everyone. I'm so so sorry I have been so absent. I feel really guilty!

We have a bunch of stuff going on at work, which is where I normally get the most computer time and I'm getting ready to move when I'm at home.

I have PM's Beth a couple of times, so at least someone knows I'm alive.

I have decided to not run or walk for 4 weeks to see if I can get my PF cleared up. I'm spreading that time over to the saddle and in the water though.

Mother scrubber!!  I am so pissed off right now.  I overdid it at Disney World.  Beginning yesterday the back of my right heel started hurting.  It's gotten worse and worse.  Turns out I have RETROCALCANEAL BURSITIS from walking too f#$%ing much at WDW.  So now I have to back off of running at least until this clears up.  I biked this morning and it didn't seem to bother it too much.  I wish my pool wasn't closed.

Has anyone ever had this before??

I've had bursitis of the shoulder that recurs occasionally, on its own schedule, since I was in my early 20s due to an old volleyball injury.  I feel for you, I do!  I would suggest getting into a physical therapist, chiropractor, massage therapist (or whatever you tend to use)  if you haven't already and get on a good rehab program asap.  Luckily it's so early in the season that hopefully you have time to recover and train before race season kicks in.  The one thing that worked wonders with my shoulder the first time it flared up, after I had tried everything (so I thought) was using magnet therapy.  Check into that if you haven't heard of it.  I know there used to be a company that sold them (Nikken?) but I just borrowed mine from my naturopath at the time.  Anyway, that's my two cents.  Hang in there and keep us posted. The good thing about being a triathlete is we do have other sports to fall back on when our bodies can't do one of them for some reason!!

Never heard of it before, and I'm beyond sorry to hear you're dealing with this, but I got a huge laugh out of your "mother scrubber" and am adding it to my vocabulary list :D

Laura: Oh wow, that sucks so much. And I know you were really looking forward to getting back to training. At least you have an excuse to focus on swimming and biking now? (Last year I was laid up with a knee injury that kept me from running for a couple months. I was miserable at first, but it really forced me into the pool, which in hindsight was great.) I hope you had a great time at Disneyland, at least!

Renee: I am so impressed that you made it to the 5:45 a.m. class. I have a *terrible* time with early morning workouts. I just can't do them unless I've got a buddy counting on me to be there. (and sadly, I don't have any workout buddies right now). Go you!

Mother scrubber indeed. I'm calling a MORATORIUM on Manatee injuries and illness. Nobody is allowed to get broken from here on out. Poor Laura! I am so sorry, and I certainly hope it heals well, soon. BABY IT. You need that foot!

Just because I have a morbid curiosity regarding pathology ...

1. I assume you went to a doctor (or some kindly PT/chiro/etc.)? (Yes, I actually do know the difference between calcaneal and retrocalcaneal bursitis ... )

2. I'm still of the opinion that ice cures everything. Almost. Everyone together now: Frozen peas, up to 20 min., 3 or more times a day. Thank you ver'much.

3. Which shoes did you wear at WDW?

x2, big time. Are there any Manatees who haven't been sick and/or injured in the past month?

I'm working with the theory that all of us are getting these injuries out of our systems before the race season starts for real. Just wait for spring -- we're going to be in fantastic form. I INSIST!

1.  Yep.  Brother-in-law is a doctor and said it's a "classic case" whatever that means.

2.  I am icing it right now.    I'm going to ice it at work several times tomorrow. I want this thing well fast!

3.  This one is what got me, I think.  I wore my Merrill Jungle Mocs.  They are hard in the back around the ankle, and I think that the hard part basically beat me in my achilles tendon all weekend.  We literally walked around for at least 10 hours (not including standing around time).  WDW wasn't crowded at all, so we didn't have to stand around much.  I wish I had worn different shoes the second day.  Oh well...

ShawnC13 - 2008-01-07 4:33 PM So I am not as slow a swimmer as I thought. It was my first time swimming in the morning before I headed off to school. I was in the slow and stoping lane I couldn't give the person in front of me enough room in the lane so that I wouldn't have to stop and wait for them. I got in the pool and things went great the first 100 was nice and smooth. I slowed my strokes down and was really trying to stretch them out. My question to our swim expert is I know as the distance increased that kicking will become more and more important but I find that I swim so much better with just my arms and very I mean very little kicking. Should I be doing more kicking drills or more of a stroke drill. It was so weird to have my swim go so much better by just using my arms.

Hi Shawn, I read this post earlier today and started to write a response, but I like to be thoughtful about it - so I will post more tomorrow night

I've had a hard time focusing the past couple of days - some pretty major life changes going on

but, you are right, the kick is important, and you want to be incorporating kicking drills in with your workout

ShawnC13 - 2008-01-06 9:21 PM Well second set of aero's I have been given and neither will work oh well guess I will have to buy some. On a side note my LBS had the Specialized S-Works tri bike OMG is it sweet looking a cool 7500 and it could be all mine hahahahha. Where is everyone today hope everyone is ok

Why aren't the aeros working on your bike?  Is it your bike or just a coincidence?  Yeah, 7500 sounds like sort of a lot for a bike.

I've had a super busy weekend but did manage to run yesterday and swim today.  I am finishing up my sprint training plan for the remainder of January, then I will be starting up the Oly plan.  Too bad there aren't any tris around here for a few more months!!!  I posted some pix in my blog of a big mouse (rat?) named Chuck if you are interested in viewing....  This week is crazy hectic too, but I am determined to stick to my training plan--too easy to let it slide and then I suffer for it.  I also started my winter cleaning this evening.  TMI?  You tell me.  It's just a bunch of herbs from whole foods designed to clean out the pipes!!

What's everyone else been up to?

LOL  - Leslie, I had to read the winter cleaning comment twice - I'm thinking - hmmmm, you use herbs to clean your pipes - and then ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I get it   LOL
