Originally posted by aviatrix802 Whoa, Mark, sword fighting class?! Way cool. My boys want in on that. They’ve done fencing and we have a foil, but sword fighting is a whole different thing. Very fun.

It is a lot of fun. My friend is a HEMA (Historic European Martial Arts) instructor and I'm taking his classes on German style long sword based on the 14th century manuscripts of Johannes Liechtenauer. The only downside is the occasional bruise!

This weekend was a bust for me as well. Traveled to LA (to see the King Tut treasures exhibit at the LA Science Center, which was incredible) and opted to sleep in instead of run. Yesterday morning I had planned to go trail running however I woke up and my left ankle was so stiff I could barely walk. Not sure what I did considering this foot usually never gives me trouble. It loosened up throughout the day and feels fine now so I will get back to running tomorrow morning.

Side note: We stopped in Solvang on our way home to pick up some danish goodies and I found an Icelandic porter. Very dark and smokey, would go well with some smoked Gouda.

Birthday brick!! Yep, it is my birthday (39). I rode my bike for the first time since my HIM in October and then ran a mile afterwards. It still feels weird.

Found out I did my HIM ride with the front brake open. Oops! Guess I’m lucky I didn’t have to brake hard.

Awesome tattoo, Gretchen!!!

Nicole, get thee to a doc! A concussion is nothing to guess with, especially with the training you've had going. And man...are you the swimming queen or what?

Sword fighting class....I'm training wrong. :-)

Spent the week/end at our vacation house doing nothing but yard work. Seriously, I mowed a total of something like 14 hours. I was so spent that I haven't done anything else in a week. Off for a good run tonight and hope to get a nice bike ride in tomorrow, if not then I am going to swim till I drop. Hopefully a little of both.

Short ride this morning on a spin bike at the gym followed by some strength training.

I have a bike fitting his afternoon! I’m excited...mostly for the new saddle so I don’t hurt every time I ride, but being optimized for power will also be cool!

Up this morning for the first day of my HIM training plan!! 45’ run on tap this morning, followed by some strength training later this afternoon. I’ve intentionally picked a less intense HIM plan this year to have time for ST.

Tattoo: eye of Horus on my left bicep. I’ll post a pick when I get to a real computer and until then curse the lack of ability to post picks from the app.

Yes! Glad I wasn't alone!

Also, can't wait to see the tat! *Edit* just read on and saw the pic. Very cool! And happy birthday!!!

Sandi, thanks for the concern! It really was very mild and I'm back to normal now. My jaw is still a little sore but nothing like last week.

I've had a busy week! Got a swim in Tuesday (~2300 yards I think) and today (1900 yards b/c we chatted a lot, but I also went to the Os game and got a little tipsy last night so I'm just happy I made it). Went to boot camp yesterday.

Going to run tomorrow FOR SURE. Hopefully it's not raining, but even if it is I am running. I have a tri that I thought was a sprint on July 17th but just realized I signed up for the Oly (eek!). Month and a half to get in 10k shape! ugh

Hey, everyone.  Been off the grid for a while here so lots to catch up on.  Work and family travel, more injury issues (see below), plus work has been nuts lately.

@Nicole - you seriously need to stop playing football

@Gretchen - welcome back to the States

@Jenn - sorry about IMLP but there are plenty of HIMs you'll be primed for

@Mark - way to rock the jersey!

@Sandi - glad to hear running is going well, and ya DQ hasn't been around for a while (not that I should talk...)

OK, there is probably way more than that.  LOL

I've been kinda sorta training while dealing with a hip issue, likely related to my back.  Been through the insurance wringer, got a CT to rule out nasty bad stuff, then some X-rays, waiting on approval for MRI.  Had a little setback with my back, also, doing something stupid of course.

So I bailed on bike racing this spring and quick running for a while.  I'm still doing stuff, more like working out vs. training.  I'm on 13 straight days now.

Oh, and I did finally get my new bike:

Ridley Fenix SL, and I had the wheelset built for me with Flo 30 rims, Sapim CX-Ray aero spokes, and Powertap hubs (power meter on rear).  Still getting used to new position, shoes, saddle, and all that.  Really quick when I let it rip, though the weather hasn't cooperated much lately for outdoor rides.  The seatpost looks super high from that angle, it's really not that bad.  LOL

Hey Mike, long time no chat! And yes, I probably should quit, but I really enjoy playing when I'm not getting injured...

Went for a run this morning. Felt surprisingly good considering how long it's been (about 2 months) since I ran anything over a mile and a half. The last time I tried to run, my shins were bothering me so bad I had to stop and walk home. Ran 9:06 pace today and was pretty consistent throughout, even when I thought I was slowing down. Makes me a little less nervous about my tri next month (which I thought was July 17th but is actually July 7th...). Might switch to the sprint though, as I'm definitely not Oly ready.

Got in about 1500 in the pool yesterday morning (daughter did 2K in the same amount of time ), then we rode in and around Gunpowder State Park, almost 20 miles.  Let loose on a couple of Strava segments, not bad results considering not riding much this spring.

Swam again this morning, about 2300 yards. We did a pyramid, starting at 50, up to 300 and back down, and weren't really going for time. Also meal prepped when I got home this morning, so I've been busy and am now VERY tired (but prepared for the week!).

I was on call this weekend and my "pager" was busy with a bunch of noisy but minor issues so I wasn't able to get out for much. On Saturday I managed a couple miles running and Sunday a short bike ride (to a coffee shop). Fortunately my on call shift ends today so I plan to get some good workouts in!

Planned on going to my HIIT spin class this morning but had a hard time getting out of bed when my alarm went off. Ended up going on a 3 mile run instead. Felt tired, but glad I got it in.

I was way off the last week and a half and am finally starting to feel as though I'm back on track. I need a couple good nights of sleep before I'm back to normal though.

I'm having trouble getting my motor going again this summer. I just can't get into the groove. After my bike fitting last week I did nothing until today (3mi run). Of course, I did spend the weekend cutting down trees with my dad and building my niece and nephew a tree house. Nothing is relative, but it doesn't feel like tri training.

Goal for this week (admittedly a day late): hit every workout on the plan.

Thanks Nicole!!

I went out for a short bike ride this afternoon (30’). It was supposed to be a brick, but about half way through I started developing a massive headache. Experience tells me running with a headache just isn’t for me, so that short run will be done after tomorrow’s bike ride.

Did a little over 30’ on the bike, followed by a 17’ run. Followed that up with some yoga to round out the day.

The new bike fit seems to be working out, but I’m not sure about the saddle. How does one go about tilting the nose down a little? My bike rails are horizontal and I don’t see any way to adjust that, so is there a special insert I need to buy? A technique? This saddle is Better than my last one, but there’s no way I’ll survive 56mi on it. It is a terry butterfly, if that matters.

Way to get out there, Gretchen! And way to listen to your body. Running with a headache is definitely no fun!

I made it to boot camp this morning. Still super tired but feeling good this week b/c I'm fueling well and getting my workouts in. And I think getting more sleep than I have been lately. Probably gonna crash early tonight, which I am very much looking forward to!

I really like it when other people tell me they look forward to going to bed early. Makes me feel less weird!

If it is weird, we can be weird together! I love sleep and feel so much better when I'm getting about 8 hours consistently! Doesn't happen very often, but it's really wonderful when it does.

I'm in bed every night by 9:15 because I wake up when it gets light out, and I'm a grumpy bastard if I don't get my 7 1/2 at least.  I'll bet you're in the majority of most of the people who have this hobby, so don't feel weird!

For most saddles, you should be able to tilt them a bit forward and backward.  Not like 30 degrees or anything, but a few anyway.  If you loosen your seat clamp bolts just a little, then push down on the nose and re-tighten them, it should tilt a little forward.  At least that's how my IDM saddle works...it's designed to lean forward but that feels too weird for me so I have it slightly less aggressive that way.

Yesterday was almost an hour of incline treadmill walking and then "ran" some stairs (all eight flights at the Merritt Nicole!!), followed by a ton of leg, hip, and core strength work, probably the hardest session I've done in six months.  Then got up today and really struggled through a swim workout - it called for all-out 50s which I usually do around 38-40 seconds off the wall but I wasn't able to break 45 - just pathetic.  I even just bailed midway through the last one.  Got in 1800 of a planned 2300.  Planning an easy trainer or outdoor ride later today.  I repeat, EASY.

Happy Thursday!

Thanks for the tip on adjusting my saddle, Mike! I'll give it a shot tonight and then let you know the results tomorrow morning ("long" ride of 1:45).

Just a quick strength training day for me today. Already in the books. Torqued my neck doing the ab machine wrong (apparently, you can't lift your body with your neck muscles). I'm hoping it is a short lived soreness. I have a history of neck spasms, so a little afraid this might develop into a full blown issue. BUT, while I was in Egypt, a nurse friend of mine got me some super muscle relaxants that actually work, unlike what my doctor prescribed, which don't work AND put me into a four hour coma every time I take them.
