Good morning group!  I'm back at work so more time to chat.  LOL

Anyway quick question ...

I have my last tri of the year coming up in 3 weeks.  I've totally focused on my running for the OBX marathon in Nov.  I told myself that this tri was for fun but I can't get away from my competitive nature.  So like Tony, my swimming and biking have suffered these past few months.  My question is: are there any bike and swim workouts that I could do b/t now and then to sharpen up my speed.  It is a 750m swim, 16m bike and 5K.  It should be wetsuit legal (please, please, please) and a pretty fast bike/run course.  I need quality not quantity b/c I don't have a lot of extra time for long workouts.

Thanks!  If the cycling club ever gets the final results up from the TT, I will post my very sad results.  And yes - they are VERY sad.  I finished 6 min. behind the second to last place person.  Cry  So humbling!!!!!!!!

I'll start....Football season and soccer season has started.  So, Saturday is dedicated to two playing football and one playing soccer.  Saturday night we are "camping" out in the backyard (getting everyone ready for camping this fall).

Sunday is still up in the air....of course after the training

Sorry John,  I did read it but it got my mind off on a tangent and then I ranted.  I just finished an article about some pro complaining about poor performances and how people don't understand how hard it is to juggle their training schedules.  So I guess my rant had nothing to do with your article. My bad.  Forgive please.    Embarassed

Just saw your comment about chemistry and I'll exchange forgiveness with you.  I am a biologist, not a chemist.  That may seem like one in the same but in the world of science they are VERY DIFFERNT.  It's like calling a Geologist a Geographer (I hope I got that comparison right for you - it was a joke BTW - I am a bit slow this morning).  However his job sounds cool so I'll go check it out.  Nothing but love for ya Johnny Kiss

I just have to say that I smile everytime I see my avatar.  My little princess is so cute and that picture sums her up.

Of course, she can be a little b*tchy too.  ;-)  I guess she's chip off the old block.

tahrens - 2009-08-26 8:34 AM I use the Marathon Stick and really like it.  It hurts while you use it but you only need a few minutes with it and the soreness is reduced the next day.  I've also been told the motion helps break up the fascia attachment on the muscles to allow them to expand and grow after the muscle damage caused by the exerciese.  (sorry, that is the Anatomy teacher sneaking out of me again   )  I use to do a great lab with raw chicken legs to demonstrate the different musles of the quads, hamstrings and calves.  Next time you are preparing dinner take a closer look.  Okay, I'll stop being gross now.

How did John miss that?  I was sure it was good for a comment or two...

I have a one mile swim race on Sunday.  The hubby is doing it with me and he thinks that since it is too warm for wetsuits I will beat him.  He is faster than me but says he gets bored after about a 1200yds and then he starts to slow down.  So everyone pray he gets bored REALLY SOON!!!  Then I'm going to try and do my 12 mile run home from the swim race.

No racing for me this weekend - just some hard workouts.  Sat nite I am going to a nice prime steakhouse and eat me a pound (or more) of lightly grilled cow!  Yummy - nothing like a 26oz bone in ribeye!  The restaurant sits on a working cattle ranch in East Texas in the old ranch house.  Check it out  Everything I have tried there is fantastic! We know steaks in Texas!

dalessit - 2009-08-26 9:13 AM Anyone else in my boat of getting overwhelmed with all the things you want to do and how fast you want to do them?

I am in the middle of Marathon training.  It is coming up on cross season and I think I would like to do it but don't have a bike setup for it so I would need to go pick up a new one, plus when would I have the time to practice as it is a unique riding sport.

Right now my swimming and riding are taking a huge hit due to the marathon training and actually being busy at work.

Oh yeah and I have a wife and kids that I would like to see from time to time.

LOL, I need an extra few days to the week to get in everything I want to do.

I have set some lofty goals for the rest of this year and next.  I want to go 5:30 at lonestar, I want to do a 40kTT sub 1 hr (that means almost 25mph for 40k) and I want to do MCM sub 4 hrs.

Just venting a bit, thanks : )

I am way behind but this post caught my eye.

I know exactly what you mean.  I'm trying to train for another half-mary (which really isn't a big deal, but I'm getting nervous due to the lack of time).
My wife is back working so her training schedule is now limited to afternoons.  Schools back in so the girls are both in gymnastics, baseball goes on until mid October, football started last week, church league softball just ended, but co-ed fall league starts next week.  Then there are the church and other social obligations.
And, most shockingly, work is actually keeping me busy.

Yesterday afternoon I was thinking about training - my motivation is nearly gone.  I'm hoping it's due to the massive schedule change with school starting again.  I need to find that 'thing' to get me going again.

I understand the lack of motivation aspect as well as the lack of time for training, especially this month.  While I've put in longer distances in bike and run, my consistency hasn't been there.  I've had a few busy shifts at work and family stuff on off days.  It's all good, but I've been exhausted.

I'm not sure how many races you guys have done for the season, but I've hit 10 races and have 2 more for sure.  I'm tossing around the idea of one this weekend (Michigan Triathlon Championships) and then another tri in Mid Sept - before my half mary where I want to break 1h 40min.  Then there is another sprint in October that is local for me that I feel obligated to race.  That's a lot of racing in 1 year.

So I'm prepping myself for next year... I think I'll try to limit my racing to 6 - 10 and go longer distances.  I'll definately have to plan A races and training around them.

Anyone else feel like this year has been the busiest year for racing?  Definately the most I've ever done.  So maybe it's part of the reason we get the fatigued and spent feeling.  Maybe it's just me, but I still love Tri and get excited thinking about racing!

Are you kidding?!  The last thing I need is to give him an incentive to go faster!  Besides, I have an excuse b/c I have to conserve for the run right.......

BTW, 26oz of ribeye?!?! Holy cow man - literally!    But I must say I miss good western bar-b-q.   Here in the south they call pulled pork with a vinegar based sauce barbeque.  Barbeque meat must be beef, not pork, and the sauce must be thick, sticky and tangy.   Yummy.   Enjoy your feast!!!!

Havin'Fun - 2009-08-25 1:50 PM Ok nutrition experts...I NEED HELP.

I got my Infinit yesterday and I had a 2 hr bike on tap for today.  Had school meetings first thing in the am, so as soon as I get home I mix up my drink and am on my way.  Riding was going along fine (same as usual).  I drank some Infinit at 15 min and again at 35 min.  At 40 minutes I got very light headed and dizzy...seriously didn't know if I was going to be able to hold up bike upright.  So I stopped and drank some plain old gatorade I had also brought.  From that point on I alternated gatorade and the Infinit and I was fine the rest of the ride.

BTW:  When I got up this am I had my normal breakfast.  Then a power bar right before going out on the bike.

Should I have eaten something with the Infinit?  It was a little sweet to me.

Oh, and my big hill at mile 7.....cruised down at 29.6...fastest I've ever been on my bike.  Didn't hit the brakes and didn't even scream

Edited for spelling.  Who knows how to do spell check on this site?  I can not type!!!

Linda

I am late responding to this, but I thought about it on my run today so here are a couple of questions:

1. Did you ingest any calories besides your feedings at 15mins and 35 mins? drink anything?
2. How was your fluid intake up to that point? either immediatley beforehand or the day before?
3. What about cycle? (close your ears boys if you don't want to hear this)

Given the fact it was so early into the ride doesn't make me feel like it was a lack of calories so I am thinking either dehydration or an electrolyte issue.  One thing I learned this season is the importance of doing feedings on a timetable.  Unless I am having stomach issues on the bike, I am feeding every 10 minutes.  For me that is a small slug of concentrated Perpeteum followed by H20.  I actually abandoned Infinit on the bike because it bothered my stomach and I wanted a different protein source.

Re: the cycle.  All sorts of things happen to me around Day 15-18 and the week before.....I tend to need to eat more for my workouts during that time than any other.

Andy--- Again I am going to have to go w/ Suzy on this one.... The TP balls are the way to go!  You really do get your money's worth and it comes with a few different rollers for different muscles.  Expensive, but worth it.  They will last forever (unless your dog things the ball roller is a "Ball" to play with )

Tony--- Your problem is really not a bad problem to have, think of all the people that are dreading going for a walk once a week.  I would just say try and prioritize things.  What is your strength's and weaknesses?  Play on your weaknesses!  Improve there, or try something completely new.  I have an adventure race tonight because it is the end of the year (sort of) and the weather is turning (so sad), but time to jump on the Mtn. Bike.  I will also re-join the rock climbing gym and start working on my upper body strength again.

Different strokes for different folks, but the off season is supposed to be STRESS free, relaxing, and ADVENTUROUS!!

Hopefully that makes sense?!

Since Suzy broke trump with a girly question I have one for  the ladies.  I need a recommendation for a tri saddle.  I have a Terry Butterfly on my road bike and am very happy with it but I sit much more forward on the soft tissue and pubic bone on the tri bike and ....well lets just say that isn' t going to work.   Do you ladies have any suggestions? I follow a few female specific tips that help a lot for chaffing (I'll spare the guys here but send me a p.m. if you are interested) but the saddle is more of a pressure issue.

Just be aware if you use the TP balls a lot, they do wear down and get a little mishapen.  These all work to some degree, but the one on the right is the newest. I probably have two or three more at our Lake house.....at $25 per ball the price is a little hefty!
