Fred, did you see my question?

In summation, would an 84-mile Bike in early May, a HIM in late May, and a metric Ironman 3 weeks after the HIM (5 weeks before LP) on a tougher Bike course than LP, very similar run course and similar swim course be an excellent way to prepare for LP?  I've included the profile of the Bike Course.  Even Mr. JohnnyKay himself can agree it's a challenging Loop.  I'm trying to prepare myself as best as possible.  Thoughts? Feedback? Etc.etc..etc...

Those would be good race prep / race simulation type of events.  They won't do much as far as "training" by themselves.  The biggest impact on your race day is how the rest of the trainng goes, week in and week out.

Train well and consistently around those events ( better to be less than fully "peaked" for them, and enjoy them, but train through and keep the focus on LP ).

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to recover from those well before the IM, 5 weeks should be plenty of recovery time before the IM.  My one caveat would be don't plan on taking much if any time off after the Metric Ironman, as you'll want to hit some big training from 5-3 weeks out, and starting to taper back the big training at about 3 weeks out.  So, don't destroy yourself at the metric IM and miss the training on those key weeks just afterwards.

To do an IM you're going to be getting up and over the race distances in training ( or at least, I would suggest that you do ) in the swim and bike ( not in the run though, obviously ).  So, doing a metric IM (2.4k swim, 112k bike, 26k run?) certainly shouldn't be too much more than just another training day.    Treat it as a race sim, and practice your plan for the IM ( use the gear and nutrition that you'll be racing with ).

Thanks for the good advice.  Yeah, the Metric Ironman is just a Training Day, not a Race.  I'll be doing it at a Low Z2 effort.  I'm thinking it'll be the beginning of my final Build Period before my Taper.

And I plan on pretty much training through the HIM.  I'm going to follow the BT Intermediate Ironman Plan.

Regarding Jorge's training camp, I will be up there before it as well.

My plan is to arrive in the area June 12 or 13th (driving up) and then killing myself until the camp starts on teh 17th.   Then have Jorge and crew kill me till the following Sunday (20th).

My plan, with Jorge's blessing, is to have ridden that bike course* at least 5 -6 times during that week.  The run course will also be covered more times than I can imagine.  Repeats on the hilly portion, etc.  Pacing, nutrition, visual cues, they will all be taken care of before I leave to do my final build period.

* course = 1 loop.

What do you guys think about registering for '11..will it fill up on site like '08 or go on line like '09?

We are trying to decide about going to Minnesota at same time frame. There is a tri many in my family and extended family would like to do same day as LP and if we register this month race fee is half price.

I wouldn't put off a family trip to Minnesota and the chance to do a tri with all of them just to for sure get in via regular fund at IMLP.  For me, if it didn't go online registration & i was set on wanting to do IMLP 2011, i would go Community Fund.  But that's just b/c the family vaca would trump the gamble of possibly having to pay an extra $500 or whatever for CF, which is worst case scenario.

WittyCityGirl - 2009-12-18 12:53 AM IM Newbie question: What's all the Jorge camp talk? I've seen it here and read it in blogs....

Jorge leads a training camp up in LP on the course.  June 17-20.  It's a chance to train on the course in a different way than if you had just gone up on your own.   Plus, it's fun to be a with a group.

Kathy
Like the other reply, I did just that this year.  I couldn't justify going up to the race to sign up (family comittments) so I resigned myself to the fact I'd go for a community slot if I couldn't get in online.  In the event, to my surprise it opened online and  I got in there.
Part of my reasoning I got from rstocks. LP is driveable for me so if I did a different IM I'd have the added expense of flights, car etc - so the extra for community slot seemed justifiable that way!

I think you'll continue to see it go online.  One of the changes they've instituted is that the on-site registration is "cash on the barrel".  It used to be if you went on-site, you got a ticket with a code you used to register on-line at a later date.  There were many people taking these on-site tickets on spec, and then not actually registering ( since it cost nothing to take a ticket on-site ).  Since on-site now has to pay up-front, just like on-line registration does, only the really serious people sign-up on-site and spots are available online.

Just be at your computer with all of your info handy ( including your USAT number ) ready to go and hitting reload on the registration page starting 10 min before it opens.

Granted it's a bit more for you northerners, but you can also get a slot at races like FL 70.3 for "regular price".  I'm not a fan of paying extra for a race, so I use that money, race in FL and then spend the $550 there.

Ohh, this was one of the questions I was just about to post, whether there was any kind of planned pre-race training camp/weekend.  Advance knowledge of the course before race weekend would be good.  Fewer surprises on race day.  Though the logistics of getting the bike to and fro might be a little tough for us mid-westerners.

Plus I need to check the dates of my other events in June....  hmmmm.....

I'm hopeful to go up Memorial Day weekend as well since it's a long weekend.   If a bunch of us found another weekend we wanted to go train in May, we could do it self-supported but still have the group factor.

PennState - 2009-12-18 1:15 PMI really would like to go up for a training weekend... but not sure if I will.

Just hard to balance work, family training AND 10 hours drive each way. I really enjoyed going up before... hmmm

You haven't driven up there w/o kids in awhile, have you?!! I can do the drive in 8, usually closer to 7.5 if my stops are fast and i don't hit traffic.

Does Tracie do any girls trips? Oooohhhh, it just hit me. You need to have T take the kids for a visit at her mom's while you go to LP! Wow, that's brilliant.

Im half deaf, so Im just hoping to finish!!

I've done 1 1/2 IM but crashed my bike a mile into it, took me awhile to fix the flat, but I did finish!

My goal is to finish in front of my first child, a boy, who's due to come in April 2010... were trying to find him a shirt that will say.. "My Daddy's an Ironman"
I just want to be smart nutrition wise on the bike, and finish!!

You guys rock!

You will be able to actually find something like that when they put out the finisher's schwag for sale after the race in the merchandise tent.

x1000, Mike and Fred. The only way to gain fitness is to let it go andthen rebuild it better.

..although as my next IM is so far off, I'm looking to easily win the weight gain/fat, drunk slob competition. I HATE to lose.
