I think I started shivering when I read the word 55.  That's oh so cold in my book.  The water temp in our lakes is about 65, and I still won't get in yet.   We're supposed to be in the low 90s for the next week, so I'm hoping the waters will warm to the low 70s pretty quickly

Didn't do anything yesterday, and loved it.  Gelt guilty the whole time, but my body is exhausted for some reason.

Headed out to yoga.  It's a rainy, nasty day here with lots of storms.  Wish I could be curled up on the couch all day!

Hi everyone!

I want to wish everyone a good weekend a little early.  My husband and I are leaving for Charlotte for the weekend after work.  So, I will be out of contact for a few days.   MMmm, good food and no work outs!!  Oh well, next week I will kick it even harder!!

Hope you have a great weekend Karen! You'll be all rested up to hit the training 100% next week.

As far as water temp--55 is cold. THe coldest I've swam in is 59 with a wetsuit, of course. Right now the Pacific is 62..a regular heat wave.

Speaking of weekend, what's up for everyone? I know the 5K for you Chicago peeps, but what else?

I'm signed up for a tri-club tri on Saturday morning, but may bail on it since I've not felt 100% this week. Volunteering at a century ride on Saturday afternoon (DH is riding in it) and then long ride on Sunday morning. If I skip the tri Sat. I'll do a longish run instead.

Karen enjoy your weekend!!

55 degrees is waaayyy cold!!!  The coldest I swam in was 62 degrees in the fall of '08.  Not only was the water freezing the air temp was cold for most of the race as well!  I couldn't feel my feet at all until well after the end of the race.  And speaking of cold water temps I am afraid that is what I am going to be dealing with on June 12th for my 1st race of the season.  I have never done this race before but have read that the temps can be in the mid to upper 50's some years.  Surprised

I decided to pass on the 5K on Sunday and just follow my plan for the weekend which is 20-25 mile ride sat morning, 5 mile run sat afternoon and easy 10 mile bike on Sunday.

Who is racing this weekend?

Laura

Have a fun and safe trip this weekend Karen. Yeah, 50s is a bit cold for a swim...maybe I will at least attempt to brave it at least once. Otherwise I will just stick to the pool for now. I didn't start OWS last year until later in the summer because I didn't own a wetsuit for awhile.

5k on Saturday (although may pace run with the wife so not really a race), 3.5 mile corporate challenge race with about 15,000 other downtown Chicago employees on Thursday, and a 40 mile bike ride on Memorial Day weekend.  They completely shut down one of our "highways" that runs along the lakefront and it's only open to bikers for about 5 hours on Sunday morning (5/30). So it's a little pricey but worth the experience here.  It's not a race though but you can go as fast or as slow as you want. It's approx 40 miles total but you can ride farther if you want as long as your off the road by a 10/11am I think.

Ryan- sounds like you have a busy weekend coming up!!  Good luck to you and everyone else in the 5K this weekend.

I had a 5 mile run this morning which was horrible.  I wrote about it in my training log.  Will do my long ride early tomorrow morning.

It was awesome meeting both of you and your spouses.  I had a great time.  My family debated eating the rest of the burrito but were overwhelmed by its size and have decided to see how long it takes me to eat it.

Chris did take first in his AG but Quincy didn't do to shabby either.  She was second.  Watch your mail for the medals

I just looked up my results and I'm super excited.  I PR'ed the race and broke 30 minutes for the first time which was enough to put me in the top quarter of finishers both in my age group and overall.  I was FOP!!!!

After the race yesterday I went home and did a 50 mile bike ride with a friend.  It took forever because she was having family drama and had to keep stopping to take/make phone calls, but it was a good time.

Also, we sold our house!

Did I mention tomorrow is my birthday?

Here's my race report which I wrote before reading Quincy's which I'm going to do now.  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

Happy Birthday Allison!!!  Today is my son's 6th birthday as well.

I've completely taken a break from training the last few days.  Had to work this weekend, but otherwise was just a little burnt out.  I think I'm coming back around though.  I have a century on the 12th of June, so I'd better get crack'a'lacking back on the bike.

Hope everyone has a great week.  Long weekend coming up...YaY!!!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes.  The tri top I bought as a present to myself showed up yesterday and I'm looking forward to breaking it in.  Hubs bought me a book, "Born To Run" by Christopher McDougall that I'm really looking forward to reading and a box of chocolate.  Yay!

So the weather has become unseasonably warm.  We're hitting 90 degree temps which is just crazy for May and since Mother Nature didn't send a memo I'm just not ready for it.  I did my run this morning at 8:30 and thought I was going to wilt.  I've gotten out of swimming pools dryer.  In fact, I lost more than 2lbs over a 50 minute run.

That brings me to my question.  How do you carry water on your runs?  When I'm pushing the jogger I can stick it in the tray, but I've got nothing for the rest of my runs.

Happy belated birthday, Allison!  I loved Born to Run, as evidenced by my siggy.  As for water, here's my recycled standard post:

My hubs had a 4-bottle Nathan brand belt that he got when he moved on to half mary and marathon training.  It's this one:
Nathan Belt

I've used it once or twice, and I like the smaller bottles, but I didn't like how my arms brushed against the two bottles in front when I ran.  I also like that the bottles are easy to clean (the mouth pieces are designed to be opened with your mouth when you are running, and are a good shape for grabbing and squeezing when running, but also come apart easily for scrubbing when SOMEONE leaves them in the garage full of blue gatorade for 3 weeks after the Disney Marathon....).  I use his hand me down belt -- one that holds a single bottle in the back, not this exact one bt something similar to this:

Fuel Belt

and I like it better, even though it can be a little warm in the small of my back when it's really hot out -- because it doesn't interfere with my arm swing.  He loves the Nathan one, though, so it's really all about what you are comfortable with.  I think it is definitely good to carry water with you if you are going to be out for more than an hour or so, especially when it is hot out, as it often is here in Florida.  Also, you can tuck fuel into ones like this, and also hold ID and keys, etc.

Yeah this weather just hit me too. I went for a run on Sunday and felt like I was in the tropics. Going out again tonight hopefully for a ride and run.
For my shorter run I usually something similar to Dineen's hubby. It also made by Nathan but it just one bottle that you hold.  Actually you don't really hold it because your hand slips through the cloth strap and is basically stays unless you flap your arms a lot like a bird trying to take flight. I use it for longer runs too where I know I can fill up along the way.  It doesn't hold a lot of water (10oz) but I still don't like water belts yet although i am sure I could get used to them if I start mary training. The water basically squirts out which is nice because you don't have to stop running to drink and you don't drip it all over your front either.

I have a hand held that holds about 12 oz, but it drove me crazy to have something in just one hand...I felt off balance.  I have a Nathan fuel belt like the one above.  It only has 2 bottles though, which is perfect if you can fill up every couple of hours.  It also has a small pouch in the back for and ID, a key and a couple of Gu's.

My 2 cents re: hydration on runs. I've used the fuel belt with two bottles and it has a little pouch, kind of like the one above, only I replaced the 8 oz. bottles with 10 oz. ones and they seem to get me through on most runs up to around 2 hours. Then my DH found one on a website called steep and cheap like the one larger bottle and it has lots of pouches, which I need occasionally. That bottle holds way more water but it heavier. It took a while to get used to, but I like having the extra space for keys, money, bloks, and other um...stuff. I think it's totally personal choice. I tried running with one you hold and it drove me crazy.

And, enjoy Born to Run. I liked it a lot too and even bought some of the vibram five finger shoes trying to get more "natural" with my footstrike. Haven't quite gotten to the barefoot yet.
