Veteran 262 Clarksvile | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I have to say I can’t stand Zoot. They make skinny people feel fat. I still have some baby fat to lose but Zoot does not cater to people who have broad shoulders or still have a little baby fat. Their XL fits like a SM. At first, I thought it was me then someone turned me onto 2XU and TYR. Which both their Larges fit just fine (Top and Bottoms). I have to try some of these other brands in the above discussions for next year’s season. As for try suit verses tri tops and bottoms I like the top and bottom. Like flight suits, they are cool looking but when going number two they have some unique issues. Such as having to unzip too pull everything down. Then you must make sure your suit is not over the drop zone although a simple task but when you’re half out of it many forgot to clear the drop zone and ended up with a messy situation. |

Veteran 202 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I feel more comfortable wearing tri shorts and a tri top. I like the fact of not having to change and being able to wear the same thing all day. I just bought a pair of 2XU shorts and top and absolutely love them. The shorts have alot of pockets and the comfort level is good thus far. The longest ride I have done so far is about 40 miles so I will let you know how they are when I get a longer ride in. |

I think I will have to order a pair cause our local stores don't carry them. Any one know how they run size wise?" I own a couple of pair of DeSoto shorts (forza tri shorts and 400-mile). I am 6'2" with a 32-33 waist, and the large fits well. Below 32 waist, probably medium, 35 and up probably XL. |

Regular 183 Parker, Colorado | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread "(forza tri shorts and 400-mile) How would you say those compare? I don't own either... yet." The 400 mile are great bike shorts, but the pad is really substantial and would take forever to dry out, and would probably be noticable on the run (I haven't tried). The forza's are great tri shorts, with a thinner pad that worked well for a HIM, which is the longest I've done. I will try longer rides in them before deciding what to do for CDA, although pulling the 400 miles over the forzas in T1 and back off in T2 is a possibility. Other than the pad difference, they are about the same material and length and excellent quality throughout. |

I was still hurting by the time I got off the bike but it was bearable. Contrast that to my last HIM - I only wore my Zoot singlet. By the time I finished the 56, I hurt every bit as much as CdA. It'd be tough to make shorts with LESS padding than my Zoot ones, so I bet the Forza shorts are an improvement. But I'm not sure if it'll be enough. Maybe I'll just get both. |

Member 319 Seattle, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Uh oh, looks like the excitement in this thread is wearing off a bit. Since the marathon Sunday I've been taking it easy. Just a trainer session Tuesday night and not much else. I'm trying to wrap my head around getting back to the pool, but haven't successfully convinced myself yet. After a long season of training (first race in 2010 was the Disney Marathon in January, and basically nonstop since then) I am possibly enjoying time off a bit TOO much . What is everyone else up to, training-wise? |

What is everyone else up to, training-wise? Yeah I kinda figured it would slow a bit heading into October- December. Many are probably getting a well deserved rest break. I didn't have much of a season this year so I feel like I am back to square one and getting back in shape. I have dropped about 10 pounds and have been very consistent up til a couple of days ago when a nasty cold hit me and I took it easy for a couple of days to try to kick it. Hope everyone else is getting ready for the journey ahead. |

You all running marathons are making me feel undertrained already and I haven't even begun!! ;-) I ran 11 miles today, only the third time over 10 miles this year, felt ok, but my hip is still giving me issues. I am headed out for a fun ride tomorrow at The Shenandoah Fall Foliage Bike Festival and hope to ride about 50-60 miles. Hope you all are having a great weekend. |

Elite 2998 Fishers, Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I'm starting to get into some grooves and get a schedule going now that I have a better idea of how grad school and training will fit together. I've also been researching some coaches, and am waiting to hear back from a local one. I'd like to go the coaches route, didn't think I could due to some money stuff, but thankfully the house I was trying to sell in TX I was able to rent...so no more shelling out lots for house payment and rent here. Anyhow, putting more time in on the bike on weekends, getting back into the pool, doing some runs--will keep the long one from 10-15 just cause I like it that way, and just building some base up. I watched Kona last weekend while doing the trainer for 3 hours (so I could watch Kona) and that just made me more excited about CdA. I really am looking forward to the hard training and the wonderful feel/atmosphere of Ironman and the intensity of the race. |

Extreme Veteran 396 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Finished my first marathon today. Started strong- decide to go with the sub 4 crowd. Did great until mile 16- and even ok up to mile 20 then the finger cramping set in. I wanted to finish- so I eased off and made it to the finish line.

Yea which is my body telling me it's about ready to seize up completely. Happened after my 70.3 in Racine. I think I need to learn how to balance my salt. I feel like I have the other parts of nutrition down, maybe not. My face was coated with salt today and I didn't even sweat that much. Anybody have any ideas? |

Member 47 Biddeford, Maine | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Endurolytes or Lava Salts take care of the problem for me. The Lava Salts are good on the bike because they are 250 mg of sodium and you need to drink a lot of water with each one. The Endurolytes are smaller and work well with less water on the run. |

Master 1332 Vista, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Congrats on your first 26.2 finish! Great.
I usually try to make sure and get plenty of sodium, potassium the days leading up to a longer event like a marathon -- popcorn, salsa, sushi with pickled ginger and soy, etc. Also baked potatoes (but not tons of butter or sour cream) are great potassium sources as well as bananas and peaches. :-) FWIW |

That's pretty awesome your warning cramp comes in your finger, and not say, your quad, hammy, calf, or glut. |

Master 3546 Millersville, MD | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Just stopping in to catch up (several pages behind after my BT hiatus). I'm feeling mentally/physically recharged (which was the goal)... my "off season" ended yesterday and I'm starting my base building today. Goal is to run 7x week and bike 4x a week to lay down a solid base before the new year, where the serious IM training will begin. It's KONA or bust for me this time around. |

I am thinking about doing a block of running like this winter. How are you planning to structure this? Are you doing any long runs during this block? The goal in the beginning will be just weekly mileage. But in general I will try to follow the 1 long run, 2 medium runs, the rest short runs model. Week one schedule is: 3, 3, 3, 4, 3, 3, 6 = 25 eventually get to something like this: 6, 10, 6, 8, 4, 15 = 49 (split that 10 into two 5's and you won't even feel it). Note that although I've done no running for 4 weeks, this year I pretty consistently ran 40-55 mpw. I plan to get near 50 mpw by the new year, which is approximately a 10% increase per week. Normally I'm more conservative than to increase by 10% every week, but I have a decent base and I'm not doing any speedwork at all in this phase... and with 7x a wk running you can spread those 10% out to the point that it's barely noticeable. The best part of a 6 or 7 times a week plan, imho, is that it allows you to build to some very respectible mileage... but without lots of long runs where the risk of injury is so high.
