And when people ask for my #1 piece of advice for IMAZ it is, "do NOT swim in the Lake on Saturday." And it is for EXACTLY that reason. The "reason" he is referring to is the subpar quality of the water and the potential to make you sick. Save the swim for race day, folks. Why risk it?
Okay, maybe it's not the best swim venue out there...I mean, it is a hole dug in the middle of a city and filled with water after all. But with that being said, I've swam in TTL numerous times and have never had an issue. I'm not sure that I'll do the practice swim the day before the race, but that's mostly because I don't like to do anything the day before race day. I will, however, do all of the splash-n-dash series that takes place in TTL...I believe that last one is a week before the race.
could you tell me more about this series, i might be in town the weekend before and would like to hit it up. I did a quick search but didnt find anything the week before |

Elite 3687 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Destroyer - 2012-08-27 5:13 PM mndiver and fit4infinity, how did the HIM/Olympic go?
I won the sprint I entered. There were 4 elites that came in before me, but I got 1st overall amateur. Surprised myself because I didn't think we were supposed to win sprints in the middle of Ironman training. I had a tough day. It was supposed to be 76 for a high and overcast. I knew when the sun was shining brightly halfway through the bike it was going to be a tough day. Swim went fine but was a little slower than I had hoped. It was fun to jump off a boat into Lake Superior though. I was really happy with the bike. Managed a strong but controlled ride out with a tailwind and managed to save enough energy and stay focussed enough not to drop off much on the headwind back. I just blew up on the run. Was drinking everything I could get my hands on through every aid station. And it still wasn't enough. Projected 2 hour run took almost 2.5. I got absolutely fried and my trisuit looked like a salt lick by the end. The two biggest problems were my Garmin froze up on me so I had no idea of pace or time. I am positive I went out way too hard for the conditions. Had I known how hot it was (problem #2) or my pace I could have slowed things way down and maybe saved myself a little. Good heat trainingnfor AZ. |

I plan to get out on the run course Saturday afternoon and on the bike course Sunday morning. I'm assuming the entire run course is open, but, not sure about the bike. Will I be able to ride the entire bike loop or are some parts closed off? Thanks! |

Extreme Veteran 648 Scottsdale | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Someone asked about the water temp in TTL on race day. In 2011 it was 63 degrees, and I believe in 2010 it was 61, so you can assume low 60's will be the target. I will post changes in temp starting about a week or two out, so you can see whether it is dropping or staying stable based on weather. |

Expert 1544 Alexandria, MN | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread My last real race before AZ is done, today I realized (and got anxious a little) that all I'm looking at, training for and thinking about from here on out is IM AZ. No other distractions or "tune up" races, just the big show. At least I finished last weekend's HIM with a PR and finally broke the 6 hour mark! |

This is going to be a huge training weekend for me. 1:10 open water swim followed by 54 miles on the bike today, 4.5 hour ride tomorrow, 1:45 run Sunday and then something big on Monday. It's starting to get real now. |

Expert 1544 Alexandria, MN | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread My biggest month ever in August, about 50 hours worth of training. I'm hoping to have a solid September and to keep building on the path I'm on. Hopefully over 100 miles running (first time ever for that), 500 miles on the bike and 40k in the pool. I'm a stay at home dad, the kids go back to school (my youngest starts Kindergarten) so I'll have all the time in the world to get this done. I'm very lucky to have this, once IM AZ is done it'll be time to start looking for a job again after 8 years being at home with the boys.
