Last day of the month, tomorrow morning is my official weigh in.  I'm tempted to skip dinner. Tongue out  Just kidding, sort of.  But it IS interesting to me how on the day before my official weigh in (which is just an arbitrary thing I created) I eat super well, drink lots of water, no late snacks, and get to bed early.  Wouldn't it be nice if I could just do that every day?  I mean, I know I CAN, I just don't...

I'm off for my last run of the month, pretty cool I only missed one run in all of January.

Fred D - 2013-01-31 7:36 PM Saw my PT today about my lower leg pain. Looks like some positive direction for me as its not an achiles injury. I am debating my goal for February. I think the swim 40k goal is a good me, but I also work a lot and travel to disney at the end of the month. I feel like my bike fit is dialed in finally and I think a goal of biking more quality trainer hours might be a better goal. Hmmm.... Groups been reasonable quiet, let us know if we need to touch upon any topics?

Glad to hear that Fred (about no Achilles, and bike fit).

Question for the group:  What are your thoughts and experiences with balancing sleep with training?  Lots to say here, but I'll just start with the question, one that is on my mind lately!

Michael,

Without decent quality sleep training turns to junk hours and is too hard on the body.

By the time I dealt with the traffic on Hull Street I was late getting to Masters.  That instructor evidently leaves if there is  no one for class in 10 minutes of start time so I swam the workout posted with out the benefit of a class.  Now that I know exactly which road to turn off of Hull Street I may try it again....but it was a whole lot of post work running around for me to get there.

hopefully it's not quite that cut and dried!  I've been doing quite a few late night workouts on either the trainer or the treadmill, and it definately compromises my sleep.  I've been getting between 4-6 hours on those nights.  Other nights it's more like 6-7.  My body prefers 8, but hasn't seen that in years...

Anyway, I know it's not optimal but still it seems like working out on less sleep is better than not working out at all.  I suppose it's a balance of how often, how much, how hard, all that stuff.

I operate best on 7-8 hours of sleep.  I think my workout results are better and I rarely get sick.  Deep into IM training, it is sometimes tough to get that amount of sleep because of getting up so early, but then I take naps after really long days.

My goal is always to go to bed at almost the same time regardless if it is mid week or the weekend and get up at the same time too.  I am very willing to sacrifice social time to do it.

Dragged my weary butt out of bed to run today, took it to the treadmill cause I was so tired.  Is the day over yet?

February goals.....Hmmm will try to quantify these today.

I met my January goals for consistency!!!  Yeah!!!  Now to continue with that consistency into February.

Thanks again to this group!

Didn't make any dent on my weight goal for January, so will try again in February.

January's totals:
Bike: 6h 25m 27s
Run: 14h 28m 13s  - 75.37 Mi
Swim: 3h 00m

and my Feb 1 scale reading is...  207.  Right where I've been for the last week or so, and down 3 from Jan 1.  I hoped for better this month, but apparently hoping doesn't get it done.  Wink

I'm pleased with my numbers, it fits right in with my mission statement of: run a lot, bike a bit, don't forget how to swim.  I think I might start logging distances on my trainer rides though, just so I have something to see in my logs other than the time ridden.

Breaking down my run a little more, I ran 26 times for an average of 2.90 miles/run.  And my average pace for the month was 11:31 minutes/mile.  The longest run was 3.99 miles.  These are the numbers I intent to track each month to see how they improve with time.

Today I'm going to do an hour on the trainer followed by a 30 minute run.

david.

There are mixed opinions on strength training in tri training.  I like it, and feel some strength training can be beneficial if you have the time to do it.  However, most of us barely fit into out agendas the training volume we want/ need for racing at our best.

There are some people who primarily do workouts like the crossfit to train for triathlon.  I'm not sure that they are sound, but that "camp" seems to swear by it

Sprints will be fine on water/ gu.  Oly's are pretty good on that as well, perhaps some electrolytes on the bike.  Longer races need more preparation for nutrition. That comes mostly through trial and error in training days.

Yes, I have heard about the crossfitters doing marathons or triathlons by just doing crossfit or crossfit endurance but I'm certainly not in that "camp".  Although CF kick started my way into a healthier lifestyle, I believe one gets better in S,B,R by doing a lot of S,B and R =)  Thank you for all your advice Queen Zipp !

My open water class was rescheduled so I wanted to ask for tips on sighting so I can begin practicing.   I train in our outdoor pool but plan on dedicating some swim sessions at a local lake. I've heard about following feet or using a landmark. I also got some tips on how to adjust your stroke every so often to take a peek on your direction.

Unless you are very confident about the feet in front of you, don't follow them blindly.  Still sight.  As you grow comfortable with them, you can sight less and less and just follow the feet, but that's got to be a pretty high level of comfort.

Landmarks are the way to go.  Obviously specific situations are going to call for different measures.  Sometimes you're lucky and there is something obvious on shore that you can head for.  More often, at least in the races that I tend to do, the buoys are the best thing.  Problem there is that when they are far away, they can be hard to see.  My usual procedure is to sight quite frequently until I'm confident I've spied the next buoy, and then somewhat less (depending on conditions) until I get there, then try to find the next one.  Obviously you should also familiarize yourself with the course ahead of time.

As for technique, I don't think I can do better than this:

    http://www.swimsmooth.com/triathlon.html

A really important point that they make there is -- do not breathe while sighting;  lift to sight, then turn your head to the side as normal to breathe.  If you try to breathe while looking forward, you will lift your head too high and your hips and legs will drop.  It isn't rocket science.  Practice diligently and you'll get it.

Nutrition is very individual.  Don't believe any cookie-cutter formulas that you see out there.  Practice and experiment and see what works in training.  And if that totally fails in a race (I hope it doesn't!) re-assess and try other things.  I would be very very leery of almost any 'studies' that you see about this issue.  99% of them are funded by companies who have a stake in the outcome.  The one piece of general advice that seems to be true for most people is: keep it simple.

Strength/core is not essential at all.  If you are going to add anything back in, I'd add core.  And try to make it as relevant as possible.  Don't just do situps.  (That's not one of the disciplines in tri...)  Having said that, lifting is quite good for general health, especially for older folks (I don't recall whether we know your age...sorry).  And I'm also convinced that triathletes who have a very specific and significant weakness could benefit from some strength training.  But as Judi said, most of us barely have time to get in S/B/R, and that's far more important for performance.

I know the feeling.  I've got 5 aged 11 and under.   Lot's of work!  (Good work, though.)  What would I do differently?  I would swim more.  Lots more.

Thank you Experior for all the helpful advice and esp for the link to the  swimsmooth page. I like keeping the nutrition simple part and I hope to add some strength training in time. In the past,I've always lost more weight when I was doing more strength training with cardio. 5 kids aged 11 and under ? Awesome. There is hope for me =)

I met my January goals for the most part but disappointed that I didn't lose more weight. All this training made me eat more and I was forced to purchase some girl scout cookies from a few neighbors =)   I lost most of the holiday excess but still about 7 pounds from my low last year and about 15 pounds from my goal and hopefully racing weight. February is a busy month so goals are to continue consistent training and focus on my diet/nutrition even more.  I'm turning the big 43 this Sunday when I will be running the Surf City Half Marathon with a few neighbors. First sprint tri is 3 weeks away and can't believe its already here...quite excited though. Have a great weekend all.

Started the month off right.. got up early this morning, went to the pool, bought a 12 visit pass and did a short swim.  This is an 18 metre pool, (19.6 yards).  I counted 30 lengths but think I missed a few so called it 600 yards.

Work nights tonight and tomorrow, then going to a friends on Sunday for a get together starting at noon.  I'll try to go to the gym tomorrow morning but Sunday is doubtful I'll get time to do anything.

Ok here's the question for you folks.  I think I already know the answer but here we go:

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on IMKY (my 2nd IM) over the weekend. IMKY is on 8/25

However, I've been eyeing a stand alone marathon (Pocono Marathon) on 5/19 (would be my first). This is 14 weeks away from IM.  Thoughts on doing both?  What info do you need from me to formulate your advice?
