Jim, Gabe and Jackie - Thanks for the analysis/thoughts/comments. Leaning towards yes. Will have to be real honest in getting my swims in. I have an upcoming camping trip to Muskoka Canada that will allow me the opportunity for at least 2 nice long open swims.

This morning - 1:45:00 on the bike in the basement. B O R I N G.

Muskoka will be a good place to practice OWS, especially if you can swim in the Georgian Bay at least once to swim. You are a little further North than us, it looks like it is about equal to Alpena. It should give you a good frame of reference on water temp. The inland lakes and Lake St. Clair are a lot warmer that Huron and Michigan are right now (3 weeks ago the mean temp of the 2 lakes was 48F, which is why we have had such a cool summer). Shore temps around here have fluctuated between high 50's and low 60's. Its a shock the first time you hit the water, after that it become like testing a hot pan before you grab. The issue is swimming long in it and having that realization that as you swim your body warms up and its not that bad. The same as running in the cold.
Jackie is right, physically you have the training to do this, its all psychological. If you pull the trigger, I will give you the inside info on the bike course, so you will know how to attack it, beat most other riders and still have fresh legs at the end. It is just a matter of picking the right spots to be aggressive. My swim always stinks, but I make up for it on the bike and hold my own on the run.

Thanks for all the gouge (in my Navy days I learned an "ounce of gouge is worth a pound of knowledge"). If I race I'll be coming up with a close friend who will also be racing. No wives. Just two 40 somethings trying to convince themselves that we're not getting older. He's done a couple ironmen and a 50 mile ultra. His training is a bit behind mine though.

Mitch - apart from the sound advice from Jackie, Gabe and Jim here's my additional input - change your goal form "sub six hrs' to "complete the swim by hell-or-highwater, then complete the bike and run by time specific goal". Meaning take the pressure and high expectation off the swim - you know you can do it regardless of swimming freestyle all the way or several breaks using other strokes and the occasional kayak if needed.

now go sign up.

Mark.

Zero. Seeing as the HIM swim is just incrementally longer I figured i'd just jump in with two feet to long course racing.

Brian- its not a loss of fitness, its the evil little voice that tells you its too hard, the distance is too far, you are too fat, you lost all of your fitness. Two weeks off is not enough time off to lose fitness. It takes 3-4 weeks for you to lose any measurable fitness. Your muscles are well rested with 2 weeks off and you have more in you than you think. Just keep pushing through and don't let the demons win. The workout that you don't want to do is the workout you have to do.

If swimming is your weakness, then HIM is a better distance for you. The Oly bike and run are too short for me to catch up with the good swimmers. I am still going to do one next week as a tune up for my HIM

Mitch- When you go to Canada bring ear plugs to swim in the Lake, if not the cold water will make you nauseous. I like the moldable wax kind you find at the pharmacy.

Good job Mark, funny for me to see that you got your Saturday workouts in already!

Ever since my knee injury in December, I had not been to the track until today to do a 5k test.  As expected, I have lost my running speed/fitness and struggled to push through my test which I finished in 22:59.  On top of that, I'm having trouble breathing during intense workouts which I think could be related to allergies/virus. Will need to find out and work a lot more on speed workouts going forward

Updating my workouts on the challenge for the week. I've been kind of bummed out this week due to a hip injury I got over the weekend. I limited my self to swim and strength workouts this week in hopes of the hip feeling better before next weekends Triathlon. Tomorrow is the swim, run and transition clinic for my first tri and I'm planning on attending the swim and transition clinic but I'm not running. I really wanted to be 100% on my first tri and I almost made it. I've been training since March and this is my first injury to have to deal with, but holding out hope it will be better before the event.

Dennis, hoping for quick recovery for you.

Brian, work or life always seems to interfere. That's what makes this sport such a challenge.

Gabe, hope you find a race to do soon ;-)
