Updating on swims, runs and bikes since Wednesday. This week is big week and the fact that I have a conference at the weekend isn't helping to calm my nerves about fitting it all in!

Stage 3 in the bag. This is where the ToS really starts to hurt. Each stage in isolation seems doable, but when stacked on each other it takes it to another level. Although just 59', the Fight Club hurt as the TT and climb stage were hard enough to hold and then came all of those friggin surges. Can't see how to survive stage 8.

First ToS stage for me with the video. Certainly made it more fun, but pretty useless during the attacks when my eyes are closed, teeth gritted and shaking my head back and forth trying to will my legs to turn faster. That stage hurt and kicked my tail. At the start I thought this is almost like a sick form of a recovery stage in the ToS. W R O N G ! ! ! The climbs and the attacks were P U N I S H M E N T plain and simple. I am getting a lesson in suffering this week. Will be good to know how far I can push myself.

We're waiting for a rider to finsh up Stage 2 and then I will provide a progress update for everyone on the ToS.

I look at stuff like this and generally take a "whats the worst that could happen" approach but realistically I foresee 3 scenarios playing out.

1. Do them all back to back and basically as your legs slowly turn to Jello in the middle of Revolver you will ride further and further off the surges until Violator where you are just carrying the base line.

2. Break them up, morning, Midday and PM

3. Your FTP is so far off (LOW) of reality that you can maintain the program or you just run them at 50% to 70%

I hesitate but I am leaning towards option 2. While it probably isnt in the spirit of TOS, but allowable by the rules, I believe there is greater training value in breaking them up. I am interested in how other approach it.

#2 - is a rule violation. Here's the source:

NOTE: Stages with multiple videos must have videos done back to back. You wouldn’t take a break halfway through a Tour de France stage, would you? So don’t even think of taking one here in Sufferlandria.

Realistically you have to dial back the intensity. Saturday is a 2.5 hour ride with an IF of 1.01. Theoretically, if your FTP is accurate, that is impossible. A one hour ride at FTP generates an IF of 1.00. You shouldn't be able to maintain your FTP any longer than 1 hour. Therefore, you have to dial back the intensity. I will do a modified choice #1 - dial back the intensity a bit and see how long I can maintain that, limp across the line and whimper all night in anticipation of stage 9 and ISLAGIATT (It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time).

Edit: I checked out Alan Couzens blog. He suggests a world class cyclist would maintain about 88% of FTP over 150 minutes.

The last three days are created to just destroy you! Not to make you feel good. The course over the next five days is consistent with what you would do anyways. I think to get the most out of this, build strength and endurance, you have to follow it as scheduled. Now that I am done big talking, I am going to cry like a baby Sunday night.

I'm glad to see everyone's progress with the ToS, good job and keep it up!

I unfortunately had to drop out yesterday since I got hit by a nasty cold and am not getting any better.  Bummed out, but I need to now focus on my upcoming Marathon and full IM

Suck it up buttercup....LOL

So 2.5 hours of grinding away on the trainer. Probably 4 20 oz bottles, 5 gels, lots of chamois cream and a lot of agony. Wish I knew how to hook the trainer up to my electrical grid.

You guys are INSANE! I'm sure everyone is thinking it, I'm just the only one saying it!

Adding a 32' 1600m set after a 60' CSI Class. Have you ever done over 200 push ups and then try to swim? It's a whole new experience!

90 minutes on the trainer tonight doing TR "Antelope" - it was a grind after heavy squats and thrusters earlier today.

We're hunkering down for the blizzard here in Boston and my work, gym, and pool are already closed for tomorrow. Looks like a trainer/treadmill day!

One hour on the trainer this evening. Created a workout while watching the Texas/Iowa St game. Picked up the cadence for 20 seconds at every basket, and increased resistance during commercials. Not a bad way to pass the hour!

I think those last 4 posts must have hit at the same time and things got a little out of sequence. I'll correct.

Stage 4 completed. First time doing this ride and video for 9 Hammers is excellent - even a song about Michigan btw. hammers 7 & 8. I would definitely do this one again. I think the threshold segments may have been worse than the VO2s. Don't get me wrong, this was tough, but the rest segments helped dramatically, Setting up to get crushed tomorrow during Amgels:

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
