Oh FFS…I signed up for the 2023 ultra distance tri at MiTi tonight. If anyone needs me, I’ll be over in the corner considering my poor life choices.

Gretchen, that's great! Your wife may not be so enthusiastic but she knew, as we all knew, including you, that it would happen

Looking forward to following your training and race.

Me Biggest week of SBR since March. That's good. 4 hours 24 minutes total. That's embarrassing 4 and a half hours is my highest total in 5 months, so not so good.

But it was another small step forwards. 5 days on, 2 days rest. 4 zwift rides, 2hr 15min, 4 runs, 2hr 09min. Would have liked 1-2 more short easy midweek runs. But completed most of what I planned. So a small win.

33 days till half marathon 1 of the summer series. That's the same series that got condensed into 5 race in 9 weeks at the end of last summer due to covid lockdowns. Hopefully we get to stay on schedule this year, and the 5 races are October - April like planned. When I entered the series back in May I wasn't expecting quite so much time off with the various flus. Was planning to be many more steps further ahead than I am. I think I might die going up the North Head climb. Hopefully by race 2 in December I will have built back a bit of fitness to get close to last years times.

Baby steps Andrew, now that you are going into the Spring/Summer, everything will get easier.

Have a great week all!

Nat - Awesome race, and way to kick your own arse! And way to push on the run! You are crushing it!

Mike - that tri suit is awesome! And nice work on the 5k.

Gretchen - Yesssssssssss! That will be awesome and can't wait to hear about the machine's training!

Andrew - Glad to see you are continuing to ramp up the training!

Good morning all and happy Monday.  Race report is up:

https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=558950&posts=2#M5282482

Ouch, I'm sore today.  Probably from the downhills...haven't done a lot of them this year especially at race pace.  Day off today then I have the two biggest weeks in my training plan before I start to ramp down and taper for the Oly four weeks out.  Hoping to break three hours which will take really solid racing throughout, decent transitions (gotta channel Nat on those), and hopefully some decent weather.  I'm also contemplating a flat 5K a week out - I have a four mile tempo run planned anyway so might as well overcook it a little, right?  My coach (me) might have some words with me about that choice.

@Andrew:  we are what we are as runners...I've been all over that damn chart over the past 15 years, and it takes a really solid run focus to make significant movement.  You tend to do hilly races, too (I'm not sure why - sounds like torture to me ).  And yeah I hear you on not publishing W/kg.  Sounds like you're slowly progressing back and that's a good thing - you've had a rough fall/winter to say the least.

@Gretchen:  yeeesssss!!!!

Sub 3 hours, you got this. In my only oly to date I finished in 3:06 without really trying, including taking my time in transition, and in terrible weather conditions.
We seem to be at about the same level overall so if you have better luck with the weather, fly through transitions (practice, practice, practice) and put some effort into it I am sure you can break 3 hours

Saturday I had a very busy, very productive training morning. I was just going to go to masters but forgot I had a speed repeat workout scheduled in the Garmin program I'm doing. So I started my day off with some drills and 400s (ouch...haven't done 400 repeats since college), then went to masters practice and got about 1600 yds in. That's actually low yardage for our practices but it was a pretty good workout, mostly 75s. I attempted to play volleyball after all this, but after 1 game I realized I was useless and decided to take it easy.

Yesterday I did a 20 minute low impact ride as my legs were still pretty dead. Planning to do a 30 minute ride over lunch today.

Too much?! Me?! Never!
J/k, I actually think it was good, other than not being able to play volleyball, but luckily we had extra ladies.

I step away for a weekend and everyone is doing epic stuff!! AWESOME!!

Mike and Nathalie--congrats on the races! Both sound like you did well and had a good time...which I think it what we are in it for, right? Anyone making money doing this stuff yet? :P

Andrew--training sounds like it is going well...slowly but surely back after all your winter illness junk. Don't over clock it at the beginning of the season. Spring is coming down there!

Nicole--busy weekend! Our master's practices are usually about 2500 plus wu/cd, but every once in a while we do what coach calls "Quality Wednesday" (which, btw, it never on a Wednesday) and it is usually about 1600yds of pure he!!--super hard efforts on long rests where you have plenty of time to think about quitting.

I had a busy weekend with lots of driving. I built a replica of an Egyptian bench known as a dikka for a friend of mine who lives in Louisville, KY (about 4 hours away). I left my house at noon on Friday to deliver it to her and then turned around and left her house at about 2pm on Saturday. Sunday we had to drive 2:15 to meet my wife's parents for lunch, so that was four and a half hours in the car plus two hours for lunch (and yes, this is much better than visiting them for a weekend!). I think I single-handedly supported the gas/oil industry this weekend. My credit card statement is just gas...gas...gas...gas...then the are you sure this is you? notification.

I got up this morning and ran for the first time since my race. 35 minutes, so nothing earth shattering, but I figured I'd better get my butt moving again, now that I have another big race on the schedule. Over the weekend I was talking with my friend about triathlon and I happened to mention there is a 70.3 about four hours from my research site in Egypt on Nov 18. She is insanely trying to work it out for me to be able to do the race and our whole team to be able to come watch. It would be AMAZING, but there are a lot of logistical issues to work out. I had thought about it before MiTi, but dismissed it as too difficult. That was before I qualified for Worlds (which I'm going to!) and before I signed up for MiTi again. I have to re-evaluate if/how I could get it done now, because it would be absolutely epic.

Off to try to put together a lesson plan for my class today. I feel like the beginning of this semester is basically a Tokyo Slide...

Speaking of spending buckets of money...
Anyone have any tips on how to get my tri bike to Egypt? There is even an Ironman Egypt 70.3, but no bike transport service listed associated with the race...only bike rental places. I'm going to be in Egypt for 9 months, so I kinda would like to have my bike!

That's a tough one, Gretchen.  I'd get a good bike shipping container (hard case) and just pay the airline the extra baggage fee and make sure you insure it.  Not cheap.  Ditto for your race wheels if you're bringing them too.

Here's a good article from Bicycle mag on them:  https://www.bicycling.com/bikes-gear/a27334144/bike-travel-cases/

Taking it as part of your checked luggage would be my first choice. Lots of bubble wrap/foam noodles around the frame, derailleurs, break leavers/shifter leavers etc all disconnected from the frame and wrapped up in the middle of the box to avoid getting smashed. That said, I've only flown with my bike once (90min NZ domestic flight), and yes it was a very stressful experience (bike was 100% fine tho)

Other options just though of. Rather than ship your bike, you could buy a new tri bike and get it delivered to Egypt? Or even a 2nd hand one sourced locally (not sure what the 2nd hand tri bike market is like over there but can't imagine it's brilliant) you could just leave it there with a friend so there's a bike there for your yearly trip. Or, for your work over there do they ship equipment backwards and forwards, maybe you could sneak a bike into the next container of supplies that gets sent over?

As for an expensive sport. Yes, yes it is. But prior to triathlons I used to race sailboats (much better at that than tris) That makes tris look cheep, so I've tricked myself into thinking it's not too bad.

You snuck that in without a big announcement. You've signed up for the worlds too? So that's 2 full distance tris in the next 12 months?

I think that's a great call and I can't wait to see you pull it off

Expensive indeed! I feel I'm probably due for a bike upgrade but I ride it so inconsistently I just don't think it would be worth it.

Didn't get to my ride yesterday b/c of vball playoffs (we won our match!) so decided to do a brick this morning. 30 min PZ ride followed by a 5 mile run. My watch messed up at the beginning (had to delete and restart) and I needed a bathroom badly at the end so had to stop my watch early, but overall did at least 5. Felt strong, 8:47 pace. I'd like it to be a little faster but I'm getting there!

Nice run, Nicole.  Curious about your Saturday morning run...how fast are your 400 repeats and what's the recovery time?  That would be a weird distance for me as it's too long for neuromuscular and too short for VO2max unless the recoveries are pretty short; I'm wondering what your Garmin plan is trying to achieve there.

Destroyed myself this morning with some anaerobic work...4 x 2' @ 125% with equal recoveries (actually there's a longer break between 2 and 3).  Cracked on the 4th one.  Then did a 30 minute treadmill run with some 45" bursts at just over 8:00/mile pace.  Then some lower body and core work.  All before 7:30 AM.  Oh, and I'm still a little sore from Sunday's race - I was walking around like Fred Sanford yesterday.

6 400s, goal was 6:15 to 6:45 pace I think. I was hitting right around 6:37, so 1:38 on the 400s with a minute rest between. And this was after some 30 second cadence intervals. It was reminiscent of my high school and college track workouts. Building speed and endurance. My 5k goal for this program is 21 min. I'm not sure if they will end up having longer speed intervals. I'm doing Jeff Galloway's run/walk program. So far I feel pretty good! Seeing lots of progress in a short time. This is the most consistently I've run in a verrrry long time.

World's isn't a full...for some reason. It is technically a "long distance" tri, which is 4km swim (longer than IM), 112km bike (69.5mi), and 30k run (18.6mi). It is this awful, weird hybrid race...I don't know how to wrap my brain around it, to be honest. And, to be fair, I haven't actually received my invitation yet, but as national champion, it is an automatic bid. My wife and I decided we will go, so yeah....tentative race calendar currently looks like this...Ironman Egypt 70.3 (November), World LC Championship (May), defend national championship (August)--all while living in Egypt. If you are going to do one hard thing, why not do three...all with the difficulty turned up?!?!

Got it...those last couple must have been tougher and starting to push VO2 max a little with those short rest intervals.  21 flat...huh.  That's cookin'.  I ran a 21:55 on a pancake flat course in 2014 and it took a lot of focused training and a perfect race to get that sub-22.  Nice work on the run consistency - makes a huge difference, doesn't it?

By the way, that 21 puts you at a VDOT of 47 for Daniels', and checking the pacing chart at 1:38/400 you were pacing exactly as Daniels recommends for I (VO2max) pace.  Funny how the different methods all wind up the same LOL.

Me too - kind of whistling through the graveyard hoping nothing falls apart on me (again...).  I already have my biggest running year since before my back surgery in 2017.  I suppose post-race I'll need to be careful and not ramp up too fast.  I ran almost 1,000 miles between Oct 2013 and Oct 2014 and in culminated with me blowing up in the half marathon and never really getting back.

That is super interesting and good to know about the Daniels' method! Yeah the last couple were definitely rough, although I'd found my stride at that point. The first few I had trouble pacing.

Yeah, 21 min might be a little lofty, but my PR (from college lol) is sub 20 (I want to say it was 19:30), so I know I can get at least somewhat close and figured aiming high means I will increase my chances
