Kim/Suzy/group, thought more about the breathing thing.  If you are winded after 50 yards when brething bilaterally you may not be taking air in on the side you don't normally breathe on.  I have seen folks working so hard to breathe on their weaker side that once they get it they forget to breathe.  Try doing a 50 just on your "weaker" side and see how that goes.  I wouldn't suggest changing things up midseason (it is mid season for some of us Smile)  but it is something to think/work on in the off season.

Just my .02 I thought about during my ride today.

Finished up my last LONG ride before the HIM.  It was 44F at the start and windier than heck the entire time.  Saw lots of people on the IM course today. The best was seeing a group of swimmers at 6:30am contemplating swimming the IM course in those conditions--lots of chop!  Putting on a wetsuit would have been brutal. Something to look forward to next year!  Tomorrow is a rest day so my month is complete as it Taper Week #1....its all down hill now.

Good idea!  I'm at the tail end of my season so it is one of my priorities starting in October....funn thing is I used to bilateral breathe, but had to give it up to tweak so many other things...it'll come.

Yes!  The swim coach I took a lesson from said that 1) I am not fully exhaling on weak side and 2) My mouth is not fully open when I go for a breath which is not the case on my good side.  Linda, I think I will try practicing weak side breathing for a full 50 and see if I can get it to where I am not winded.  THEN, move on to bilateral breathing.

Nice job on the indoor bike, Rob, way to get it done any way you can.  And Suzy, if it makes you happier, my run was 52F today...John is going to kill me!  Nice last long ride, Suzy

Huh? 2 John, I give up.  You don't like the number 44? You missed winning the lottery jackpot because you didn't have the number 44?  Do tell....

Rob--HIM is on Saturday, September 12th.  No one in their right mind has a race on September 13th in WI. It's IM MOO, baby!  It is where we all will be, participating, volunteering or cheering athletes home....so cool.  I am as excited for it as I am for my race. I LOVE IT!

Hey All---After my ride in 44F weather (he-he John), I need input on what to wear for this HIM if it is even colder and I start wet.  Today I wore SKINS over my biking shorts (which I won't do in a tri-too hard to get on), arm warmers and a lighweight jacket.  An hour into the ride, I was sweating, but taking the coat off was too cold.  What to wear????

The problem is...you are going to need something to warm you up after the swim.  What about some type of underarmour?  When it is 50 or slightly below here ( which usually happens in the dead of winter HA)  I usually wear an underarmour top as an underlayer, and it keeps a little heat in and blocks a little wind, but also breathes and is comfy even if it gets warm.

I was able to sneak down and check out the TT and the road course for the USA Pro Cycling Championship this weekend.  It was amazing!  I have never really seen professionals do a TT – those guys can fly!  It was awesome to see George Hincapie win the road course in his hometown again.  The hand cyclists are such an inspiration.

Good Morning MG!

As I may have mentioned in passing one of my other hobbies/passions is woodworking. I have an idea of something cool for each member of the SWBKRUN MG. I believe you will all like it. It takes me some time to make them so I will start this week. How long it takes depends on how many want one. (I mentioned this to Tony when I was in the DC area, don't give away the surprise!)

What I need is for any of you that want one of the surprise [whatever it is] to PM me your address so I can send it to you when it is done.  It is not triathlon related but is made mostly of wood.

Hi everyone, I hope you all had a nice weekend. I had a tough training day on Sunday.  I did the 1 mile OWS race and it was good.  My husband was having pretty severe anxiety issues about it and he overcame them with flying colors.  He is not use to swimming out of the pool without his wetsuit - but he was brave and he did great!!  I am very proud of him.  I did well and learned I need to turn my arms over faster.  About 400yds into the swim the course went over a dense patch of lake grass.  It was so tall it was breaking the surface and you were tearing you hands through it with each stroke.  That stuff hurt and all I kept thinking was SNAKES SNAKES SNAKES!!!  Here comes the Seaweed monster again!!

After the swim my friend and I ran the 12 miles home.  I have an injury question for the group.  I did my first trail run on Friday and it felt like I tweeked my left ankle a bit.  So on Sunday's run my friend said it looked like I was favoring my left a little and after 8 miles my achiles was really hurting, right where it joins with the bottom of my calf.  I have sprained my ankle before and this pain isn't the same - for one thing it stops when I stop running.  Does anyone have any thoughts on this?  Chet, what was the deal with your achiles injury?

Suzy - for Savage I have similar temperature issues.  Very cold water air at the start and then it heats up.  So I only wore a sports bra under the wet suit with the idea I didn't want lots of cold wet clothes on me during the bike.  Then in T1 I put on a wicking shirt and a light weight wind breaker plus I had toe covers on my shoes and my long sleeve gloves.  I put a bandana on my head to help with the cold air on wet hair and ears.  Then for the run I stripped back down to just the shirt.  The light weight wind breaker works well in all types of weather.  It helps with the air but isn't heavy or bulky.  I have used arm warmers but the air blowing on me is what does me in.  Just my two cents.

Suzy.  i noticed on the race site that the bike course has been updated.  not sure if this was added since you rode it.  first look at the 10 day forecast thursday morning.  hopefully the current trend will hold and temps will be very similiar to last years race.

Is it possible that you have an issue with your soleus?  This area often gets tight and causes problems for the achilles/calf/lower foot.  Best bet is stretching and using a TP roller if you have it to work the area like this:

The worst thing you can do is keep running on it if it is tight.  STRETCH!!!

Thankfully, it has been updated.  After I emailed the RD they eliminated the rotten road with the awful RR.  I rode the new course a couple of weeks ago and it is much better.  The run still has the grade 10 hills, but that's life!

Tracy's issues sounds similar to the one is had/have. Its gets really tight on the lower calf, which runs over the the muscle near the shin bone. I know that I do not stretch my calves enough, and that is what Dr. Shain had diagnosed a few months ago.

I hit 79 miles(126kms) this month running!!! That blows away anything I have even done in my life!
Of course swimming/biking have take back seats. But as its the end of the tri-season...Its time to get ready for my 1/2 marathon on Oct 3. I still do have a small town sprint this weekend, but I'm not sweating it to bad.

August was an interesting month.  I've never biked so much or run so little.  I thought I would be and moaning about my lack of hitting the pavement, but I've enjoyed the change and my body is better for it.  September will be a lot lighter--it is my kick back and reassess month.  Taking 5 days off for a trip to NY to have total fun with some friends. Not taking ANY workout gear at all (I keep telling myself that over and over Undecided).

August's totals:
Bike:31h 00m 51s  - 523.7 Mi
Run:18h 56m 32s  - 130.61 Mi
Swim:22h 35m 48s  - 51224 Yd
Strength:15m

Anyone else exeprience a GIANT appetite after a big workout week?  I swear I could shovel in food all day long today.  Rest days suck because they put me at my pc sitting at my dinnette table which is close to the fridge!  Someone tape my mouth shut.

Sounds like everyone had a nice weekend?

Suzy/Tracy-- For your race I would maybe just go with socks, and Arm Warmers.  Everything else will be cumbersome.  In 1/2 Ironman's I usually wait to put sock on for the run, but this year in Boise it was so nice to have socks on the bike... The rain was horrific.  Arm warmers- cheap enough to ditch if they are in the way, and small enough to pack in the rear pocket of your shirt if you want.

I'm always starved after a good workout weekend. I usually have to nip out and get a muffin or something because it feels like I might wither away to nothing if I don't.

I resent you mark about being crazy to to a HIM up here in Sept. Why it's a wonderfull time of year. Pleople are getting out their ssowmobiles and skates.
