That's what I was going to suggest too... I took a look at the coast guard temperature map for Lake Michigan around Milwaukee, and I think you might prefer to have one... temps today (granted it's quite a chilly, gross day today) are around 50F give or take a couple of degrees.

DH grew up in Milwaukee and he talks about taking swimming lessons in Lake Michigan, and having blue lips when lessons were done. I think I'd go with a wetsuit!

Yeah...I grew up there too and never swam in the Lake.  This is in the bay, so it should be a bit warmer.  I think it's currently 70.

Right now the water temperature for my Saturday race is 86*. Think I'll skip the wet suit

Mine is low 70's. I wish I had a sleeveless but I'm wearing my full. I need all the help I can get!

I still have time to think about it. Sunday is supposed to be a travel day for the visit, and if I run the half, I won't be able to get into Albuquerque until about 8:30 p.m. That may be kind of late for my team.

Felicia, do know that the intensity of a run is specific to the runner doing it, NOT how they compare to the field or to anyone else. So even if one might be behind a good portion of the field, they can still push quite hard and have it be tougher on them than a faster person. It would simply be because they were out on the course longer even though it was the same distance covered. And that's why I was asking before about what you wanted out of the events. It's entirely possible to do both, but do know what you want to get out of them.

For the trail run, I want 1st AG. I was second last year when I wasn't supposed to be racing it. I need a 1:05 at most.

I want 2:20 in the half, but more importantly, I don't want the last two miles to suck.

I think you can more reasonably have a goal to race the trail and for the last 2 miles of the HM not to suck. That way you don't get caught up chasing some quasi arbitrary number. In choosing to do both races you have to realize you are compromising them.

Hey all. Just checking in---I wanted to share again today: I was called in to do a bit in the frog suit, as it was a special "kid's day" thing; They also got Slamson, the King's mascot to come out too. Well, my parents simply couldn't miss out on a chance to visit, so we got a pic with them! I am the giant frog...just in case it wasn't obvious....

For comparison, our pool today was 73F. It was cold for the first 200y or so, but then okay. So my opinion is that 70F would be my limit without. Much below that and I am not sure I would ever warm up.

Yeah, a coach in my masters group says that if it's below 70* he gets hives.

Is it, um, possible to borrow the animal suits? There are some photos that need to happen.

Well, others go into races hoping to win AG (or overall), so I figured why can't I? But, sure. Some speed demon in my age group could show up. It's more likely that I will be the only one in my age group. But I like how you phrased it. I would plan to race the 10k and hope the last two miles of the half don't suck.

Attention all AG NAT Manatees looking to meet up. Ima let you know where I will be, and if you choose to accept, can join me for any of it. PM me for my number if you are interested

1. I'll be in Chicago Wednesday night - Friday morning. I am meeting Monica for a run moving forward at a pace slightly faster than a walk for speedy Salty whilst Monica trudges along beside asking frequently "can we stop now", poutine and beer. I'm also planning on doing some quasi-touristy things (mostly oriented towards art/design/architecture) Oh yeah, Hot Dougs and some deep dish pizza place is on my list (can't remember the name right off.)

2. Meeting switch to do the practice swim in Milwaukee on Friday. I believe this is between 11:00-1:00 and we have not yet nailed down a time but I prefer a little later. After that we have to take our bikes to transition. THEN at some point dinner and beer. I know ya'll triathletes are super picky about that stuff. I am not. So, if you prefer to pick a location I am in.

3. Post race on Saturday I have all intentions of riding the mechanical chili pepper at La Perla  the freekin' thing has a live web cam, you should all watch. We don't have to eat at La Perla but riding the pepper is a must. I was also told getting Kopps, Cafe Lulu and Maria's Pizza are all very important.

I had to fix that first point for you.

There are a TON of architecture tours to choose from - the Architecture Foundation has a number of walking/boat/bus tours as well as a pretty cool store on Michigan Avenue:  http://www.architecture.org/

Giordano's is the most touristy deep dish pizza place, but the hubs & I actually prefer Gino's East (and there's one located conveniently a block from our apartment), and there will absolutely be poutine on Thursday!

We may be in Milwaukee for Friday night dinner - will let you know, but the chili pepper riding is a MUST... and there will be pictures.

Very cool, thanks! I volunteered with the Seattle Architecture Foundation doing walking tours for a bit. I might self guide but I do like the idea of a boat. I once built a model in design school of the John Hancock building using a Fiji water bottle and a brick. Symbolism? I think so!

I'm really getting excited for AGN. I am in for swim and most likely dinner that night. I can probably find something I'd eat on any menu, so I can defer restaurant choice to anyone who cares. I would like to be finished with dinner by 9 though, as I'm staying outside of town and should make an attempt to get good sleep. I don't get on mechanical anything, but I sure will cheer on everyone who does Salty, all this architecture and design talk--what do you do for a living?

I'm a designer (architectural/interior) for SBUX. Smile

Did someone say SBux?! I'll take a dirty venti nonfat chaiLaughing

Shooot. PM me your address. I believe I owe you a book (right?) AND probably some coffee paraphernalia.

oh my! SBUX? Hold the phone... what makes a coffee drink "dirty"? I can't believe I'm behind the power curve on this.

I'm clearly not going to answer this.

Oh the possibilities....

But the "real" answer is that is has a shot of espresso Cool

Ahhhhhh yeeeeaaaah!  Nonfat dirty is my "go to" drink right now. Little spicy with a kick Laughing

And, TJ, please share one of your possibilities. I'd be interested in comparing local barista skills Tongue out

Yo, you can't reeaaaaallly control the 1st in AG, but you can try I suppose.

The thing is, you are indicating you have time goals for both races. I don't really like that considering 19.3 miles in a short span will be a lot for you. I think you can more reasonably have a goal to race the trail and for the last 2 miles of the HM not to suck. That way you don't get caught up chasing some quasi arbitrary number. In choosing to do both races you have to realize you are compromising them.

Oh yes, you absolutely can hope for the AG win, but be careful of making that synonymous with "goal". Go in and run your race. What happens happens. The way it sounded at first your success would be predicated on factors outside your control, namely who shows up and how well they run, whereas the second is entirely on you. An example of this would be my race on Sunday. I won my AG and was 7th overall, taking first in each of SBR. Looking at it that way, it might look great. But had I been one age group up, the exact same performance would have been 5th place AG. Yes, 4 of the 6 people ahead of me were M35-39, and I would have been several places off any podium spot instead of winning it. Since I look at my performance, the placing doesn't have much of an effect on how I think the event goes. It might seem like semantics, and in fairness the difference can be rather subtle, but it's quite easy to get caught up in such things and become frustrated and/or burnt out for things beyond our control. I've never gone into a race with a goal of AG or overall placing.

Then with the HM, are thinking that running it in ~2:20 should be about right so that the last 2 miles aren't awful? It might seem like semantics again, but to me there is a notable difference. When 2:20 is a goal I think one would be pushing to do that time and hope it goes ok the last couple. But in the latter, it's more of an educated guess as to how the event should be run so that the last two miles go ok, and one would adjust throughout the race if it's not going as expected. The goal is to feel good as opposed to make a time.

Definitely. I don't have the schedule for the visit yet, so I'm not sure what all will be happening and when.

Thanks for the comments. I feel the need to remind everyone that my "racing" speed is most of you all's "I can't run that slow" speed. So, "racing" the 10-k on a single track trail is not going to be speedy, for anyone there. But I learned from running it last year that I have the unexplainable need to pass people in front of me, especially when they are showing weakness. (insert evil grin).

I hadn't thought about the Disney Goofy challenge days. That also reminded me that last year, I ran 6-7 miles the day before the 25k "race." When I am running focused, I usually run 6-7 days a week, so I'm not worried about back to back runs. My only "concern," if I have one, is that my mileage is way down right now. I'm sure I can build it back up again, reasonably quickly, but I am also all about avoiding injury.

I can't say anything about "placing" goals because they are way too lofty for me, and, honestly, a goal like that would just stress me out during the race.

Ben's comments about the HM make a lot of sense to me. Seems like you need to have time goal or non-suckage goal. Sounds like you're willing to chuck the time goal for the feel-good finish...which is totally okay as long as you stick to your plan and don't beat yourself up if you finish in 2:20:20. (my inexperienced $.02)

And, hey! Who says you won't end up making both goals in the end???? Laughing

Hahahaha! Awesome family pic Laughing How's your mom doing?

Seriously!  And, yeah, that frog suit is begging for extra curricular photo ops.  Is it hot?

Do any of you guys use Infinite Nutrition? I am currently using a mixture of Hammer products, gels, perpetuem, capsules, etc.... and feeling like I am running out of energy on my long workouts. Considering a custom blend from Infinite

Nutrition is a tricky beast and what will work well for one person sucks azz for someone else.

Infinite will never again be anything I will ever ingest... ever.  Did I say ever?  Cuz I mean ever.

However, for ME this is due to the fact that my stomach hates the stuff and will do anything possible to get rid of it after a certain amount of time.  I trained with it on a few longer rides leading up to IMAZ last year and didn't have any real issues, but the day of the race went to hell in a handbasket and after the first loop (of three) on the bike course I couldn't keep anything down.

I know quite a number of people that will use Infinite for their sole nutrition for the bike - and I *think* each of them got a custom blend according to the length of their training days and races. Their customer service is also pretty good and you can give them a call to chat about what you might need in terms of customizing.

I beg, steal and borrow to fund this habit. Seriously, I can't really afford it (that'll be changing with the new job) so I had to get creative. I traded website work for my bike and riding gear. My first pair of Brooks Pure Flows were bought used for $40 from a guy on BT who wore them a few times and didn't like them, and my wetsuit was also purchased used from a fellow BT'er for only $50.

Yup.

I am a little biased towards PowerBar products but I ultimately chose them because if I am going to use gels/bars/etc. I like theirs the best. The gels are much less thick than other products, which I really appreciate. Plus the new fruit blends are AMAZING.

Mostly though, I could pretty much eat anything except jalapenos, black licorice and I am really not very fond of lemon/lime Gatorade which they seem to have on EVERY course ever. I think it tastes like bile.

I can't STAND licorice... of any kind.  Which also means no shots of ouzo, sambuca, no absinthe, no jagermeister... and I'm okay with that - just give me shots of tequila instead.

The only way I will shoot tequila is with a chaser of pickle juice (with a few drops of hot sauce) mmmmm
