Following up on this a bit further.

There *is* a DA 11-28 cassette (I thought you had a typo).  It is brand spanking new for the 7900 series, and does not look like it's "backwards" compatible with older DA/Ultegra drivetrains (if you believe Shimano).  There's a compatibility chart here:

http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/trisports/DA7900Compatibility.pdf

It's also probably not a very common cassette, hence the much higher price.  The 12-27 is well established and fairly popular and should be much more readily available for a decent price ( see the link above for one that is ~USD$100 ).

I would suggest that unless you are dead-set on having a 28 tooth rear cassette, that a 27 tooth will do just fine (and be considerably cheaper).

Look for a SRAM 11/28. That's what I'm running and it cost only... $80 I think? And the bike shop put it on for me for $10... but they taught me how to do it myself. I can switch it out no problem now.

Word of caution about an 11/28, make sure your rear deraileur can handle the 28 teeth. Per the SRAM website, my Rival gear can only handle 27t. No idea about other SRAM products (Force/Red) or other manufacturers, just take the time to check it out before dropping coin and installing.

montyzooma - 2009-08-26 1:28 PM Any reports of the current water temp?

I found something that was reporting the current water temp for Lake Monona for today (Wed. Aug. 26, 2009) was around 71 - 75 deg. F.

And here's the Sunrise and Sunset for OUR day -

We drove part of the bike course today on the way back to Madison.  The intersection of Midtown and Shady Oak is finally paved.

So if I don't want to run with a light stick, I better beat 12 hours.  Could be an issue.  a big issue!

I am tired, sore, beat-up, ready to taper, and ready for a ice cold post race beer! I also tend to catch myself going over my bike and gear with a magnifying glass looking for anything that looks like show stopper a crack, lose bolt, worn part, frayed cable, cracked goggle strap, etc. I am turning into a freak!

It's NEVER calm and peaceful here - 3 teenagers!  However, the bike is in the shop for the final tune-up and new brakes - it goes to transport next Weds.  Race wheels are on - wheeee.  Rode on those for the first time ever yesterday.  Today's a swim/run/PT day.  So far, I'm liking this taper thing, I'm a bit less sore.  Countdown!!!

Locals - condition of the bike course?  Guesses on the weather?  Bring it on!!!

Oh man, you guys are making me nervous!  Dropping off the bike for Transport next Thursday, flight leaves the Thursday after.  Coming all the way from Arizona, I sure hope it's warm enough for me there!

If you bring 100 degree heat with you we are going to have some issues

Dropped the ride off today for a tune-up and should have it back tomorrow for my ride Saturday.  Got a 1 hour bike 2 hour brick run done this AM in wonderful 63 degrees and rain, it was glorious.  Yay for Taper.

I vote for a repeat of last years temp, except 10* cooler for the run, maybe a high of 65*.  It can be 100* if I do IMAZ!

I'm panicking a little because I missed a swim this week in a week that I was going to only be swimming twice anyway. I had to stay home and watch my sick kid. I know it's the taper panicking, and I know I'm as ready as I'm gonna be at this point, but still...

If this has already been asked please forgive me. At what mile marker is the bike special needs area going to be? I want to make sure I plan my nutrition accordingly. Is it right at mile 56 or at some other point?

I worked in the special needs bag area last year.  It was across from Fireman's park, and you stop there just before going out on your second loop, so yes, it 's exactly half way.
I have a Google earth file of the bike and run courses with all the aid stations and spec needs bag station marked on it.  If you (or anybody else) wants a copy, send me an email address and I'll send you the file.
