I'm still undecided if I'm going to do some or try to do all the race. I want to try some longer walks to see how my knee handles walks. Hills up or down walking are quite painful but the run course is dead flat so that is a big plus.

I have basically three choices, don't start, swim/bike or swim/bike and walk the run.

We haven't made any flight or condo reservations.

I know someone who just had a baby and is planning on swimming and maybe biking depending on how she feels.  You know there's nothing wrong with doing an aquabike or doing an aquabike and seeing how you feel on race day.

Doing the race would be a pretty cool birthday present (plus its always fun to just bask in the IM magic).

A little Google searching and here is what I found for November 5th, 2011...

Twi A: 5:39am
Twi N: 6:07am
Twi: 6:35am
Sunrise: 7:00am
Sunset: 5:54pm
Twi: 6:19pm
Twi N: 6:47pm
Twi A: 7:15pm

So it looks like I have until 6:19 or so . . .

Want to improve your game? Drink half a liter (about two cups) of beet juice before working out. The purple sports drink helps boost athletic performance — and can make exercise feel less exhausting, according to research published in the Journal of Applied Physiology. Beet juice is a natural source of nitrates: It widens blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure and increases blood flow; and it is thought to reduce the amount of oxygen the muscles need during physical activity. A previous study conducted by the same research group has shown that drinking beet juice can boost stamina, enabling average Joes to work out for 16 percent longer. According to the study’s author, it’s okay to mix it with another juice, like apple, if you’re not keen on its flavor.

ChinaExpress - 2011-08-16 12:13 PM Plainsman...how were the winds while you were out riding the course? And great to know about seeing the hotels. It's like when you're in Vegas walking the strip. You may see the hotel you are trying to get to, but it's still a mile walk away!

It was not a very windy day, we may have caught a little tail wind after turning onto 20 down to 77, but coming back on 79 it was head wind all the way...but not bad.  Really didn't feel like the wind was a factor, but the heat was.  lol

DUDE! That's about as close to perfect as it gets. Mildly overcast with no rain and it would be what I would request if I had my druthers.

I haven't posted in awhile and thought I'd better check in.  I've been having some ups and downs both mentally and physically and figured coming in here would help set me straight!

I need to catch up on what ya'll have been talking about.  I see the projected temp looks favorable.

It's a trick to lull us into false expectations before it goes to -10 or 103 on race day.

We had the crazy cold last year...so, y'all should have perfect weather this year!  I believe that pretty much every other year it's been sunny and a high of 75...doesn't get much better than that!

Couple of questions for the FL veterans.

can you get your special needs bags back at this race?

I know the race is the day before the clocks go back, about what time does it get dark on race day?

and one for everyone, I think I'm going to use Tri Bike transport, anyone use them before?  if so, did you also send a gear bag or just the bike?

thanks

Yes - at least we did in '09.  A big truck brings them in to the transition area the morning after the race.  If you want yours back I would get there when they are delivered.  There is no one checking to ensure you get the right one.

IMFL '09.  One thing they made a big deal about in the athlete mtg was having reflective tape on for when it gets dark.   Unless you are really quick you will be running in the dark (the park gets really dark, can't see your feet dark).  They went so far to say they could/would pull you off the course if you didn't have any...although I saw some folks without reflective tape and they didn't get pulled.    I had not thought about that and the expo was out of it by then.  I ran all over PCB to find some.  Ended up getting the last pckg at a Home Depot.  That was a last minute stresser I really didn't need.

Anyone traveling alone? Originally, I was going to do it with my family but after my 1/2 IM I realized its just too crazy for everyone.  I plan on getting in Thursday AM so I am sure I will spend the whole day checking in,etc on Thursday.  What is there going on Friday to take my mind of the race?

Had a good week this week training.  It ramps up from the 15 hours per week to 20 plus over the next 6 weeks.  I have a big day on the Saturday before Labor Day 9/3.  It is a Swim, Long Bike, medium run.  I live about 6 hours from Panama City.  I was thinking of driving over Friday night and to that training day on the bike and run course.  A couple of questions:

Does anyone know of OWS they do on Saturday in Panama City?

I want to use my Marriott Reward Points any idea of a Marriott near the start of the bike?

Anyone else on this thread that will be in Panama City that would like to join in?

My wife is going to Charlotte, NC to visit my daughter and our grandson so I will be a Triathlete Bachelor that weekend.  Going to Stay Friday and Saturday.

I am finally starting to feel better about my training.  I had a solid 80 mile bike ride Saturday and could certainly have gone farther.  Next week I'm heading to the beach with halfpint to do a week long self imposed IMFL Boot Camp, lots of biking and ocean swimming.  I have been slack on running due to some nagging injuries but I have a running background so I am not *too* worried about it.  I would rather be healthy then injured on race day.

I too thought I had a running background   Not so sure now.  My run seems to be the weakest of the 3.  Of course, I never run while rested, always tired.

We did a 95 mil bike on Saturday followed by a BRUTAL 40 min run.  Just couldn't get my heart rate down.  Had to walk a few intervals.  I mean come on, walking during a 40 minute run?  Would have been unheard of in my running days.   Running at 1 pm didn't help.  Then Sunday my plan called for a 1:45 minute run which was OK.  Still was tired from Saturday which I guess is the whole reason to run the day after a long bike.  Its just I was so slow.

Oh well, I'll keep doing the work and it will all come together - right?

enjoy,

Duane

I'm even slower than all you guys but after this weekend feel more confident in myself. 12 mile run on fri, long swim and a short bike on sat, 71 mile ride Sat, then a swim and fastest 3.5 mile run I have ever done. Guess my legs are holding up better than I thought. really have stuck to the training plan and have only missed a few of the workouts. Week 14 in progress! Did decided against doing the HIM in sept and signed up for the sprint instead. Really nervous about getting injured this close.

My work schedule just got real full up to October 1st... I supervise a 2nd shift and will only have September 4th and 5th off until October 1st...

My training has always fit very well in the morning/early afternoon hours between 8am to 1pm before I head to work about 1:45pm so this won't upset my training too much..It will only take away my long weekend workout opportunities for now. I do pretty much all my weekly riding on a trainer for the convience/time/effectiveness so it looks like it's going to stay inside until October 1st,,hey yea never forget how to ride on the road i guess...

To make a long story short the Ironman journey is all about overcoming and adapting and I seem to be able to turn just about everything into a positive experience.....
