Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() gdctex - 2010-08-07 4:45 PM So...after all the discussion earlier about how not to wear race apparel for a race you have not done....how about during the actual race itself? For tomorrow's tri, there was a cool Headsweats cap with the race logo on the front. I usually wear a cap or visor during the run and thinking about wearing this one....but, is that uncool? There are plenty of people that wear the race gear the day of the event....me, I never do....bad juju! Use your old hat and don't sweat up the new one until after the race. Good luck! |

Glen-do you mean you got the headsweat cap in your pick up packet or last year's event. If last year's event then totally fine to wear it. If in your pick up packet, I say no, and like Suzy would keep it in my tri bag and sport it after you finish the race. Btw, Good LUCK!!! Go out there and represent! Kim |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() fattyfatfat - 2010-08-07 1:03 PM damn. nice job jeff. looks like you had some fast guys in your a/g. lots of top 10 overall. well done! Thanks everyone for the kind words. I had not even looked at the official results online, but I was quite pleased with the rankings after looking at them, it was icing on the cake. Only suffering from a dime size blister that must have been from some wet socks, but its on the under/outside of my big toe, rather interesting spot. I also have one toe that will probably end up with a black and blue nail, which would be my first. Just made pizzas and having a glass of wine to sit down and watch shark week! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jvanis - 2010-08-07 11:10 AM Back and beat. My half was this morning. Went out shooting for a 1:45 or roughly an 8 minute pace. My wife was supposed to run but did not due to getting hit hard with a bug about a month back and has not fully recovered from it yet. Someone we know said don't expect to PR on the course, its not overly hilly or challenging, just not a good course to set your PR, although she didnt specify why. Then again its my first half marathon race, so whatever I run would be a PR unless you factor in my marathon split. Showed up early as normal, stretched, ran a bit to get the legs firing, and then ran into a person I know from work and the race director for the Miracle Kids Triathlon that I have been working with this year. After some conversation we figured out that we wanted to run the same pace, so we stuck together. I have had a lazy week in terms of training due to life, with only a moderate swim in the past 3 days, I guess this let me fully recover for this race. We took off and were keeping good pace. About mile 4-5 I noticed that one of the guys was dropping back a bit and just hung behind us a little ways. I wanted to stick together and get through it, and I knew Tony would be fine pacing, so we adjusted pace and kept chugging. About mile 7 I noticed Mike had dropped back a ways so we waited at the water stop. After not much longer he told Tony to stick with me as his pace was not going to happen. Tony ran back and forth between us a couple of times. Each marker we passed I realized we were picking up time from the pace to hit 1:45. About the 10 mile mark, we figured that under 100 minutes was possible if we kept the pace, as the rain started to come down lightly. Thankfully Tony stuck with me, my HR was up, legs were burning, and mentally I hit a wall. 11-12 was the hardest mile, knowing I had around 15 minutes to go. I managed to stick it out although I about lost my guts right around mile 12. The last mile was painful, but the adrenaline kicked in and made the last half mile much better. Tony ran back to catch up with Mike letting me finish in 1:39:4x. I was shocked I managed to break this barrier as I thought the 1:45 mark was going to be wishful thinking. Post race, I got my first after race massage, which did wonders for my legs, and then stood around for a good while talking with others we knew. I was shivering by the time I got in my car, to come home and make an ice bath to soak the legs. A nice relaxing rest of the day and plan to ride the tri course tomorrow for next weekend. A new PR for a half, and some inspiration along with it, that if I play my cards right over the next year or so I could realistically qualify for Boston. Splits: 7:40 7:31 7:41 7:54 7:57 8:00 7:33 7:17 7:26 7:16 7:16 7:31 7:37 :44 Now that I look back at the splits, I can clearly see that mile 9-11 were significantly quicker than all but mile 7 and would set me up for a really rough finish. I learned a lot about pacing, my body, and my limits. Good luck to all other racers this weekend! AWESOME!!! So thinking back, why did you think you could only do a 1:45 and why do you think you got that 1:39???? Inquiring minds want to know....1:39 is my half PR and I would love to get back there. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Anyone up for a good swim workout? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I based my estimate off my longer runs I had done. I have done some 8 mile runs at 8:15 or around there, I forget if I did a 10 mile run previously this year, if I did it was nearly 2 months ago. Some of my long runs were also done with my wife and were in the 10-10:30 pace range. So that is partially how I based my estimate of 1:45 on that. The second reason behind the 1:45 was looking at the McMillian Calculator, I plugged in a 3:45 marathon (similar to the improvement I saw from 08 to 09, but a little more conservative 4:52 to 4:17 then to 3:45) I did not expect to drop as much time since I assume the first marathon was the easiest to improve on. The 3:45 spit out a 1:46:41, so I said lets see if I can push a 1:45. Also the thought of running miles in the 7 minute range when that is typically where my tri runs are was intimidating, even if they are on the opposite side of the spectrum. The reason I got 1:40. There is no question in my head that the only way I got it was because I had someone to push me at the end. Three of us started together, and Tony is an extremely accomplished athlete. In 1984 he tried out for the US Olympic team and ran a 2:18 marathon, then moved to tris after that and raced pro and doing Kona 4x, amongst other things. About mid way through I was ready to hang together since Mike had "brought" Tony along to help pace, and I just jumped in with them the morning of. Mike kept telling Tony to stick with me because I looked strong, so he ran back and forth to keep up with both of us. The final miles I was out of gas, I think that I am very used to fully exerting myself for my shorter tris, and a 1:40 is starting to borderline my competitive endurance. That being said, Tony suggested that the 100 minute mark was possible based on where our splits were at. I said I would try and push, and the last few miles were rough. If I had not had him a few steps ahead of me, I probably would have let off my pace and not hit the sub 100 minute mark. Obviously I was physically able to do this, and I think had I been shooting for the 1:40 mark, I would have paced differently, but mentally it was having Tony there pushing me that made it possible. I am impressed with what I was able to push to do. It makes me feel good knowing that I am still growing towards a goal of being able to qualify while still mainly focusing on tris. It re-assured me that my aim of qualifying in the next 2 years is very realistic. |

Suzy has been getting me to trust in that for about 3 years now....I am obviously a s l o w learner. This also gives you information to use going forward in your attempts to BQ as to what your body and your mind are capable of. I got 6.1 in this morning in about 1:06 range and I'm real happy with that as I am trying to get my base back up to 20-24 a week...then it's time to put on the Mouse Ears and get ready for Disney. |

If I want that kind of pain I can just stick my leg in a wood chipper and it will be about the same. |

I ran 9+ miles this AM, worked in my woodshop making a bowl out of a maple burl (gonna look great if I don't screw it up!) and just had a beer. In-laws are taking us to dinner at 4:30 so I am in a good place right now. Gotta go put in my dang ear drops now. |
