BOOYAH! Congratulations! That's a tremendous accomplishment. Sooooo awesome! And I just got back from watching Birdy and Kim do an Olympic. They EASILY took the "family championship", since Birdy got 2nd in his AG (and a new PR too, I think), and Kim got 3rd in hers. Way to go, all you speedsters!

Now if you would only hurry up and get over here... You can pour me a Jack n' Coke since my calves are shot!

Thanks for coming to watch today!  Always awesome to have support! Even though I didn't smile once today

Way to go Suzy!!!  Can't wait for all the details.  I love hearing that the swim went well....you have slayed your dragon.
The first HIM is always tough, but now you know what you are dealing with.
Totally awesome.

Now go relax, you have another big day tomorrow

Finished in 6:22 which was slower than I hoped for, but I'll take it.  Will give you more details later, but lets just say the swim went well (no idea on time yet),  I stuck to the bike plan, but the run was awful.  The ladylike version is gastric distress brought on by swallowing a mother load of air when I swim and the 6 10% grade hills that I walked up every time.  Ah well, all in a days work.

Congrats Suz!! 6:22 is awesome. I'm sure when you say brutal run you mean the 1/2 marathon took you 1hr 30minutes!!

Good Job Steve.  Didn't you just throw this oly in with like no prep specifically?  Nice 2nd

Suzy, Congrats.   Can't wait to read your race report.

Where's Rob?  Hopefully we'll hear from him soon.

I think Rob is racing tomorrow.  But definitely check out the post from John on the race site.
I think I'd be tempted to take my time and enjoy all the scenery.  It's beautiful!

No need for you to train Steve.  Just keep your wife pumping you full of beer the night before a race!    Awesome job man!!!

And since our dynamic duo over in DC are out partying for the old man's birthday, I figure someone around here better let the MG know...  you have company in that second in ag category.  Their son place second in his ag in his first duathlon this morning.

Great start to the race weeked!

LETS GO SC!!!

Friend Julie and me post HIM.  I think I am delerious at this point.  Ironically I got #2 AG....great to participate in small races.  Get this #3 AG cheated and came in 1 second behind me.  She shorted the course by running the second loop on part of the Oly course.  Sad, right?

GOOD LUCK ROB!! KNOCK IT OUT OF THE PARK!

roni_runnw - 2009-09-11 10:39 PM Hi guys and gals! Sorry I've been MIA lately. I've just been busy and a bit burnt out. Working on pulling myself out of it though, as I still have a HIM coming up on 9/26 and there's also that 50k run that I am terribly behind in training for.
I did have an awesome backpacking trip that included 60 miles of hiking with a 32lb pack with a total climb of 10,000 ft. Not exactly s/b/r, but ought to count for some kind of training. I also PR'd an Oly last weekend with a total time of 3:04:20, but I think it was mostly due to the swim being short, because there's no way I swam it as fast as they say.

I'm working on catching up with the pages of posts I'm behind on. I hope everyone is doing great! Good luck to all the racers this weekend! OH, and especially to our amazing first time HIM racers... GO SUZY!!!! GO ROB!!!!

That sounds like an awesome hike and it counts for alot.  Great job on the PR in the Oly as well.

BigReub - 2009-09-11 1:25 PM I was driving my daughter to the baby sitter.  Thinking about how absolutely gorgeous the day is.  I was actually planning on heading straight to the course and not working.
Then over the radio comes the news.  Went to work and Dad and I watched the coverage (my dad and I work together) for awhile.

He can remember Pearl Harbor and everything since (born in 1936).  We spent the afternoon cruising town in the Chevelle, listening to radio coverage, and talking history.

It's interesting to hear everyone's perspective.  I've read people's stories, but never gotten firsthand input from people I know and respect.

What year is the Chevelle?

fattyfatfat - 2009-09-12 1:19 PM I think it should be mandatory from now on that any HIM or above, which will include crazy 2 mile ocean swim's, that we race must have athlete tracking!   Rob's race venue looks amazing on the race site.

Great to hear Barry!

I've been around where Rob is racing. Its a nice part of the country for sure. He'll enjoy it tomorrow!!

That's what red bull and vodka will do to ya....and the night before a 19m long run?

Birdy--you are my hero.   I want that run off my bike.  Oh, and Steve has me working with weights over the off season.  I told him he was nuts.  I have more than enough muscle, too much. He told me to shut up and do them that I would be an even stronger animal this Spring.

I drank a ton of water last night, hoping that will help.  Didn't get that crazy but when you get taken out for your birthday what are you going to do?Laughing

Have any of you guys looked into the Endurance Nation "Off Season Training Plans"?  And what do you think of these coaches.  Seems like they kind of go against the grain with their way of thinking, but seems like they also get results.  I was listening to on of the videos promoting the off season plans, where they say they primarily focus on speed and power, then they work on distance closer to race season.

The attractive thing is that he say they only work on bike power and run pace, and the plan is about six to 8 hrs training per week.  He omits the swim from the plan and says that the time is better spent on bike and run.  They pick swimming back up during the race plan.  He is assuming that you already have "decent" technique.

Steve or anyone have any thoughts?
