Just as long as you are out there, though, right? It's all good.

I have a hard time staying motivated if I'm not seeing progress at anything I do - its not just running.

I've been playing guitar for almost 33 years and I'm still improving all the time, although its so subtle in many ways that I only notice it. But I've never BACKSLID in how well I play in those 33 years - I've always gotten better. Now, eventually, I'm sure age will catch up and affect my playing, but probably not for another 30 years at least.

I seem to remember someone telling me this some time ago....  Ring a bell?

"seeing my dad's bypass scars, and realizing that every day I have a good workout and don't end up being cracked open, that I'm having a GREAT day!"

Apples and oranges.

Music is technique-driven.

And you've probably been significantly more consistent over 33 years in your guitar-playing than in your running. Which you have not been doing for 33 years.

And you're exactly right, it takes time and practice. Racing especially. That's why I'm starting to shy away from using time goals. I think they create a false sense of what one should be doing in a race.

I would have to agree with you there. I mention I'm doing an IM, and people ask "how fast do you think you are going to do it?".

I don't care! (ESPECIALLY for the first one). I just want to finish and not injure myself....

i understand that - but I am such a goal driven individual, that it is hard for me to rationalize that. that's my personal issue - but it is hard for me to overcome.

Oh, I understand exactly what you mean.  I'm not saying that time-based goals are bad.  I think they are useful, and I think they are necessary, to some extent.

However, I also don't marry myself to a time goal for any given race.  Or I make it fairly broad (I want to run sub 21 for this 5K).  This way you're not tied into too tight a pace for the race.

And this is where the experience comes into play.  You need to learn how your body is responding to what you're doing to be able to give yourself an accurate goal for the race.  I think this is something many people aren't too good at, and pick a goal that ends up being beyond their abilities for that day/race, and crash.

I know, this seems contradictory.  But you gotta walk before you run, and crawl before that.  I think that newcomers get too involved in time goals, and could be better off focusing on other things.

I used to want to be a race car driver. So I raced cars for a couple years. I wanted to be a baseball player, so I tried out for a league and now pitch. Am I making money doing these things? No. Will I improve. Sure I guess. But I know I'll never be the top guy in either but they're still fun as heck to do. Maybe, just maybe, not everything is goal based. Or as women say: It's not all about finishing. (That's crazytalk!)

I have not tried it - but I think I would be a little sad.

However, if it tasted good, I would eat in memory of the turtle.....

Major importance.  I have to have a bigger post count, or else I feel weak and inferior.

Of course, I know you are right.

I was talking to some people after a race with a friend of mine that belongs to a local club.  He asked me how I ran and I told him I was happy, that I had gotten under a 12 minute pace and probably was going to get to my goal of 11 by the end of the season.  This chick kind of smirked and made a comment.  I was getting ready to walk away when my friend absolutely tee'd off on her (which really kind of embarrassed me, but I know that he meant well).  She came over to me later and apologized and everytime I run into her at an event she comes up and talks to me, but still, it bothered me that someone thought that kind of thing about me because of my time.  Dollar is always preaching patience to me - but I was a very good athlete all of my life before I got sick and finishing BOP does not sit well with me.  Finishing MOP doesn't really sit well with me.  Hell, I got a bronze nedal at the Transplant Games and I was a little upset because I couldn't give my donors family a gold.  I know it's irrational, I'm just sayin'.
