Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread distancegirl - 2010-04-26 8:33 AM A question for all you who have done IM before and have a coach. I am a few weeks into having a coach and I like him so far. He has a very good reputation. Right now he has me at only 5-6 hours per week of training at these distances s/b/r ->3200m/55miles/14miles per week. That seems low to me. I was doing about 1/3 more before I hired him. Is it hard for all you type A's like me to turn your training over to someone else??? I think I need someone to tell me to chill out and trust my (very experienced) new coach. Ask him or her about it would be my suggestion. Understanding the why behind your training I find key to feel that my coach and I are on the same wave length about what we are doing. So much depends what type of training you have been doing and what races you have planned between now and IM training really gets going. I'm training a lot more but did a 70.3 yesterday and have 2 more in next 2.5 months. |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'd die with only that much training even now. Communication is key with your coach. Don't let reputation be the guide. My coach is actually doing IMFL with us. I think he's writing the blueprint, but he does so with my wants/needs/life in mind. My buddy is doing it with another coach and is much more to the plan. Alot of it is what works best for you. I couldn't completely follow someone else's plan very well where others can flat out. He varies but not significantly as he figures he pays for the coaching and needs to allow himself to be coached. My first coach, a running coach, fired me for not following the plan to the letter time and time again. It created alot of friction and I understand why (i.e., injury prevention etc) he was doing it now more than then. But still, I need room to athletically express myself sometimes without fear of being fired. Its all about the alliance in my mind. |

Master 2005 South Florida | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread When I hired my coach for IMFL in 2007, I did so in order to leave all the worry up to him. I put all my trust in him. It has paid off. As a coach now myself, I would never have a problem if an athlete asked why, but there is a reason I give rest days or slow days or whatever. The problem with athletes that don't follow the plan is they often want to blame their coach when they don't get the results they want. I put a lot of thought into my athlete's plans..I don't believe in making up missed workouts, moving things around or doing some of what your coach recommends, some of what you feel you want to do. As mentioned, communication is crucial. |

For those of you who have done GCT and IMFL, how similar are the courses? In what ways? LOL. I think it's all part of it - the decision to hire a coach or self coach, the doubts about our training, etc. - so notsomuch a derailment as a discussion...*now, back to our regularly scheduled discussion* From what I understand, GCT and IMFL are exactly the same, except the bike, since IMFL is a one loop course. Is this true? |

But if I had to guess, I would say that he's probably starting you out conservative to make sure he doesn't injure you. He's probably feeling out what you are capable of and what training he can put into you. The last thing he wants to do is blitz you in the first few weeks and get you hurt. I had a two week break last season and my coach STILL started me out super easy even though I told him I had been doing stuff. It's probably just injury prevention! |

Expert 885 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Rob, excellent idea to volunteer. I did that last year so I could sign up for this year. I was up early to see the swim go off, watched as swimmers came out of the water and into T1, watched some of the bike, watched the run, volunteered at the finish and stayed at the finish until midnight. I also swam in the ocean and drove the bike course while there so I could get a feel for things. I am so glad I did. It was a wonderful experience and makes me look forward to this year so much more. |

Volunteering is SO much fun! I worked the womens change tent last year...I was EXHAUSTED (I swear...I hurt more than if I'd run the ironman!) but it was great to interact with so many athletes during the day. And I got to strip a couple of pro's wetsuits! FUN! |

Expert 1139 Austin | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I volunteered last year as well. I was in transition handing bikes off to racers as they came out of the change tent for T1. I was able to head back to my hotel and get a run in along front beach road and then back to transition for the people coming in off their bikes. Definitely had fun being there and it gave me a little taste of what I was getting myself into for this year. |

Is this true? GCT and IMFL are very similar. I did GCT last year getting ready for IMFL and I am so glad I did. The swim is the same course, just IMFL is two loops. The bike is a little different, but at GCT you ride some of the IMFL course. And the run is exactly the same, again IMFL is just two loops where GCT is one. Doing GCT helping me so much....after that race I would actually visualize myself on the IMFL course. Good luck to you all. I wish you good weather and a clean course. I hope you reach/exceed your goals/dreams! Have fun out there. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Nice job phatknot! Everyone is at different place training so no need to compare..but fun to see what everyone else is doing. I had my first 70.3 of the year last weekend so had a taper and recovery week which effects totals. I did lots of riding and it has helped my cycling power come back some. Biggest run and bike month so far this year...

I've finally been able to get outside! yay! Bike about the same as March but that is going to start to grow as I have a HIM at the end of June. Run up (half marathon in two weeks) and swim is up slightly from last month (mostly because I only missed one swim in March). |

So, when you log your first workout on 1 May, March disappears... |
