Anybody racing this weekend?

Yup! Tinfoilman - a local sprint with a pool swim, a 3 loop bike, and 2 loop run. At least 4 of my friends are doing their first tri EVER - and so is one of my coaching client. I'll be chasing down a good friend on run after she smokes me off the bike.

Really looking forward to it! I haven't done a sprint since March and I LOVE them.

. Questions I have about whistler will be cost, road quality and how it will do since its on the same day as penticton? I don't think I'd do that IM but whistler is supposed to be beautiful, no?

Very beautiful.  And lots of lodging there so I'd think it wouldn't be any worse then most areas.  And if your like me and like flinging yourself off a mountain on a mountain bike lots to do post race.  Great outdoor recreation place

X2 Whistler is awesome. Its well set up for a large event and there is tons of lodging since it was an Olympic venue and they did a bunch of development for that. Tons of activities to choose from--very family friendly. It's only about a 2 hour and a bit drive north of Vancouver on a very scenic highway that follows the coast. I'm not sure what the bike course is but I was having this discussion with a guy in my class who rides and he really didn't have a bad thing to say as far as riding his bike. He loves it out there. I've ridden a small stretch south of Whistler and my only complaints were really related to hills...haha. In my mind Whister>>Penticton.

I completely agree - Whistler is really a beautiful place...but the hills on the bike will be a challenge. I think it's interesting that no one has talked about the swim there...it will be in a glacier fed lake - so it will be COLD! If anyone is thinking about it - one thing to consider is flying to Vancouver Washington (right across the border) and then driving across to save on the 'international flight' cost.

They say 67-72 degrees for the water temp that time of year.

On the same note of flight costs if anyone were considering it, Air Canada and Westjet only charge a $50 fee to travel with a bike.  Flying to Washington and driving across may negate that though - not sure how much the difference is.

There are two derailleur stop and they are adjustable. This is really something needed to know for a complete setup. If my memory serves me correctly. Tightening the cable by turning the barrel adjustment to the left or counterclockwise will throw or move the rear derailer up the bigger cogs. This is as you're facing the rear derailer from the rear the bike. Use the guide Arend posted paying attention to step 5 and 7. It is best if the bike is in a maintenance stand so that you can pedal the bike and turn the barrel adjustment. Adjustments are made ear listening to the smoothies operation of the chain on the cogs. Really the slightest turn of the barrel adjustment will make a difference. If the barrel adjustment in screwed you will have to loosen the rear derailleur cable follow step 5 then complete setup the test derailleur.

For the bolded, the way I was told to remember was if you want the derailleur to move to the left, you turn the barrel adjuster to the left (counter-clockwise).  If you need it to adjust to the right, you turn it right.  When I was shown that then when you are standing behind the bike and you look at the alignment of the deraileur and the cogs you can see how well they line up.  I find that eye-balling it like that gets things pretty close and then you can fine tune if need be by listening to the smoothness (or smoothies as James's iphone likes to say Tongue out).

The only time I was in Whistler was in the winter right before the Olympics... they were prepping a lot to get ready for the influx, so you know they can easily handle Ironman crowds. It is beautiful there. Easy trip up from Vancouver. Lots of lodging. Lots of things to do.

I'm surprised they're on the same day as Penticton... I think that isn't ideal for the health of both races.

Thanks guys.  I always knew left and right but no where was I able to find out left and right from what perspective.  I have a repair stand so I am going to test this out.  Maybe even then get back on the bike.

ETA: and I am going to have a smoothie as I do the adjustment.  that also might have been a missing part to my maintenance skills

Anyone care to try to diagnose a strange sound on my bike?

First off, the sound is a "squeak" and it very much sounds like the tire is involved - it's a rubber squeak, like the tire is rubbing up against something.

The problem is I can't tell where it's coming from - I am 90% sure it's the rear tire but sometimes I question that.  It seems to happen at completely random times, I can be pedalling easy on a straight flat road and then just out of the blue I get one squeak.  I've also had it happen when standing on a hill - that would make sense if I was flexing things a bit but it never happens on a regular basis when standing.

Bike is a P3 so there isn't a lot of clearance between the tire and the frame but I've looked all over it and I can't see anywhere that is any closer that might just get the odd rub.

Any guesses or ideas of what I should check?

Somewhere in one of the ST threads, someone said that in subsequent years they were looking to move it to a July date.  Nothing to back it up though, just someone saying it so take it for what it's worth...

Can you throw it on the trainer and get another set of ears to help pinpoint?

I've only had it on the trainer once since the summer and it didn't do it then.  The other trouble is that I can ride for hours and never have it happen (or at least I don't hear it).

Actually Vancouver, WA is on the border with Oregon.  Bellingham, WA is on the border with Canada but it's a small airport and you'll pay more to take a hop up there from Sea-Tac.

If you come to Washington from out of state you'll normally land in Sea-Tac airport, and from there it's a 3 hour drive to Vancouver, B.C. and another 1.5 hours to Whistler.  So I wouldn't recommend that unless you're planning to make a vacation out of it and spend some time in the Seattle area first.  Which is actually really nice in August

Arend, you might be getting a bit of wheel flex.  I've had it happen to me on the P2.  Especially if it isn't on the trainer and sometimes when standing you said.  I had to adjust the screws.  The clearance isn't very much.  There was a stretch when I was riding and that was happening to me.  Took me awhile to figure it out (actually my friend did after I was going on and on about the bottom bracket or the pedals and that I couldn't figure it out).  Even though it looks like you have enough clearance w/ your weight on it and under load it may be rubbing.  Give it a good look.

Aloha from the Big Island!

To all who haven't been here for the superbowl of our beloved sport, you need to put it on your calendar.  It is A-MA-ZING!

Ran 4 miles on Ali'i Drive last night and was waved at by Chrissie W!  She is so good for this sport.  I felt like a total poser, with all the other racers out there, but a good run none the less.

Headed out to swim this morning.  Les than 24 hours until the cannon fires. Getting ready to root on the GF and all the other amazing athletes.  (My dyslexia must have been been working when I typed her number before, but it's #1301, not the reverse.)

One downside is how this impacts the Challenge race in Penticton.  Just a bit sad that they have to go head to head, and over time (or maybe very quickly) people may flock to the WTC banner and an iconic race disappears.  Hopefully not, but it's hard to think you can have two full iron races on the same day in such close proximity and both do well.

WTC offering 100 kona slots will get peoples attention.

It seems like a course similar to IMSG though with the possiblity of cold water, tough hilly bike and run although air temperatures will probably be nice.

I am unfamiliar with the Endurance Nation Off Season plan - can anyone provide a link?

You can see a sample week on their website at www.endurancenation.us.  I think the plan Sally was talking about was their 6-8 week Get Faster program which they recommend to do following the Outseason Plan.

Anybody racing this weekend?

Also I will get a Bike Maintenance Tip out this weekend.  So if you are not a weekend internet surfer I’ll link it in my training log.

Riding a flat 60 mile course Saturday with friends prepping for IMAZ, then Sunday running an X-Terra series trail race 11K.  5.5K straight up, 5.5K straight down

On the food front, I mentioned I've been calorie counting in and out.  I always wondered what people did with those calorie counts in garmin    (i know they're all loose estimates).  But something is working.  Last Thursday I weighed in at 210, today I am at 203, and I am definitely not starvng myself, nor depriving of any particular food.

One good thing is it gets me out the door to do the short 20 minute BarryP runs.  Before I kinda felt "what's the bother for a 20 minute run," now I think "heck, that's 300 more calories"

That's gotta be a really loose estimate

Congrats, Chris. 7 down is fantastic (considering how much you were already down to begin with) and it's hard to have the discipline to practice rigorous calorie counting.

Today's the first day I felt reasonably okay (probably because the antibiotics have kicked in and are clearing up the infection), and I actually hung with that and DID NOTHING.

Despite all that high-road talk about not training when sick, I put in some dog training and a 45-minute trainer ride yesterday, looked white as a ghost after and very dizzy, and needed a few hours' nap to recover. I told you ... I'm really stupid. (Because that would only be the 1000th or so, and probably not exaggerating, time I've done that).

Hmm, this time I took the wheel completely off and looked inside the cutout of the frame.  The attached picture shows what I found.  It looks like a spot where the paint has been worn off, I assume the squeak culprit.  I backed off the screws in the dropouts a bit, hopefully that helps, thanks!

And yes, my bike is disgustingly dirty.  Are those bike maintenance tips going to cover how to clean it???

One good thing is it gets me out the door to do the short 20 minute BarryP runs.  Before I kinda felt "what's the bother for a 20 minute run," now I think "heck, that's 300 more calories"

That's awesome Chris!
