Ali - So great to meet you! I had a chance to visit with your husband and children while you were out on the bike! Your kids were adorable! I asked them about their triathlon's. Did you see the photo they took with the Wizard of Oz characters! Great race out there! Tough course and wind conditions. You are amazing! I hope one day to face a challenge like 70.3 Kansas.

Ren' - OUTSTANDING Race Day Performance!! You rolled those hills like you live at altitude and train in canyons of Colorado... wait a second... you DO live at altitude and train in the canyons of Colorado! Well done my friend! Very proud of you!!

KenJ - Next time I hope to post a photo with an official Finisher's Medal around my neck! Hip is improving. Now to add very consistent quality training. 9 weeks until Ironman Mont-Tremblant (Quebec, Canada) - August 18th! Fingers and toes crossed for a success on Race Day!

Love the picture Carla!

Congrats to everyone on their races!! Post your RR if you got 'em!!

After San Diego, I did two trainer rides (one easy, and one intervals), and got back on the bike on the road yesterday...except, I did it in Tandem. That was really cool. Lots of fun! It not easy as you think it is...unless if you got a captain (the front) that is a very strong cyclist. My captain was a good cyclist, but not that strong. I provided the majority of the power. :D It felt like I was riding with a bit of a higher resistance, so that's quite a workout. If anyone gets an offer to ride one...DO IT. :-)

This week I'm finally going to do the hilly Tuesday night rides (wasn't able to before due to plans). And perhaps sometime this week I'll do the CarlaT Special on the trainer. I like that one, kicks my butt!

Happy good week everyone!

Overall, I'm happy I ended up doing the race. I'll try & do a race report soon. My spot in transition was right next to the pros, which was cool. I didn't bother them, but made my husband take a few pictures of Crowie & the others. The swim was fine. I'm still getting used to swimming in a wetsuit (I think I'm on of the few that prefers not to wear it). The bike was good (for me), I was much more comfortabe on the bike & flew down the hills, but really need to work on my climbing!! I tried to get my mental game on for the run, & lasted about 1 1/2 miles before I fell apart. I wasn't tired, hot, sore, I just didn't want to run & wanted to be done. I finished, but nothing like I know I'm capable of. I still beat my time from last year by 16 min (but the conditions were worse), but given everything that has happened recently, I'm counting it as a win. Brian, we missed meeting/racing with you, hope you are continuing to heal.

Off to spend some family time in KC.

That's a fantastic pic ladies! Congrats on getting it done.

I had a great weekend (but with almost no training to speak of). My son had a great first tri! He's definitely got my genes (a weak swimmer, solid runner, who would rather be biking...). And immediately after his race, he paced his kid sister in a 1 miler. Needless to say, I'm super proud of them both. He had to forgo getting his tri medal to make it to the running race on the other side of the park. Afterwards, he was a little mopey about not having a medal, so it was a good teaching moment too. We talked about what was more important to him. Of course I'm going to get him his medal from the RD who is a friend at the LBS, but I wasn't about to tell him that :-)

Sounds like everyone had a good (and fun) weekend. My sprint on Saturday went okay. As we were driving there, it was raining for the second race in a row. I was just so bummed and not looking forward to the race at all! Once we got there and I got started, I had fun!! Thanks for the advice on the walking. I have been doing a run/walk since the beginning of last year when the whole PF thing started. My calf is still pretty sore, so I just did my best. There was definitely more walking than usual. It helped to hear people here tell me it was a good idea! I accepted that it was the only way I would finish, and just went as fast as I could. And, it was still fast enough for 1st place Athena! I don't have a race report yet, as I am still looking for the official times to be posted.
I have PT tomorrow and will definitely be asking them about my calf!

So my foot has been bothering me the last few days - it seems PF never really goes away. I am hoping it is just a minor flare up from wearing flip flops too much and will soon be gone as I start marathon training next week!

Robin, sorry to hear the PF keeps popping up on you. If you like to wear flip flops all the time check out Spenco. They make the with support for PF. I got mine on Amazon pretty cheap.

Afternoon everyone. I hope everyone had a great weekend of racing, regardless of the weather.

I was in Rockford, MN for the 9th annual Liberty Long Course Triathlon (half ironman distance). I went down with 2 others from the Tribalistic Triathlon Team. We drove down on Friday morning/afternoon and got together to check out the course and get our feet wet. The water temperature was 61F. It was cool, but nothing us Canadians couldn't handle.
I was up at 4:00am and had a good breakfast and then it was off to the race venue in Rebecca Lake park. It is an amazing location for a race. Absolutely beautiful park. We started at 7:30am with a wave start on the swim. It was perfectly calm water. On to the bike which was over rolling hills. The run was through the park under majestic, and huge oaks, along the lake. It was cloudy all day, there was basically no wind (5mph) and it was 71F. Just a perfect day for a race.

You can check out my race report, but here are the nitty, gritty, details.
Race Results: Swim (1.2 miles): 40:25.
Transition #1: 3:36 (forgot to put on my HRM chest strap, other than that, went very well).
Bike (56 miles): 2:53:28 (19.4mph or 30.9km/hr). About 1600 ft of elevation gain.
Transition #2: 4:42: This took a bit longer than I would have liked because I had to put on my ankle brace.
Run (13.1 miles): 2:09:22 (pace: 9:53/mile). I was doing 3min walk/3min run for the duration.
Total time: 5:51:40.

I missed 40 days of running with a stress fracture of my right tibia. I was only 3 weeks back running from missing all that time. I ran 3 minutes, then walked 3 minutes, and repeated this for the entire run portion. I felt good, and there was no pain, during or at the end, or the following days. I really want to keep ahead of this injury, because my A race is Ironman Wisconsin, and I don't want to do anything that will screw that up.

I have been working with a coach (he finished 3rd overall at this race) since November and the work is paying off. I PRed my 70.3 distance by 33 minutes. I am seeing improvements in all three sports, but especially the bike portion. My nutrition/hydration plan is working very well. And, if I can keep this injury under control I think I am in for a good time at Wisconsin.

Thanks for the well wishes.  It was my Dad, and he was over with my Mom for dinner.  He said he wasn't feeling well and wanted to go home.  As he was going down the stairs of my deck he sat down and all but passed out.  Couldn't get him alert again so called 911 and had him taken to the hospital.  He will be fine now and hopefully home today.  It was quite a scare for my wife and I, not to mention my Mom.

2 hours on the trainer this morning (once I get my butt moving) since it is rainy and roads are wet.

Glad your Dad is ok Ken. My Mum has 'funny turns' every so often for no reason that Drs can find yet. However, she now thinks that they won't do anything about it so I have to force her to report them to the dr. With the NHS (which is brill - I know, I work fro them), gp's are so busy that if you don't pester them with an ongoing problem they are quite happy to leave you to get on with it.

Well done to all the racers - great photos.

I will be competing in my first ever Olympic tri this coming Sunday. Its in the same place as the HIM in September so I can practice a new distance and check out the lie of the land while I'm there. My major concern is that they pack up the finish line and all go home before i finish! We'll see.

Ken, I'm glad your Dad dad is safe and doing okay... My folks are arriving for their Summer visit starting this Saturday for 6 weeks. So its time for me to step up my game in appreciating Eileen, who is Entertainer in Chief. I promised her no dissapearing for 6 hr bike rides this year :-).

Got 1hr in on the trainer today and will try to be more consistent with it. Group rides are back on on Saturday since little league is over. If I can keep up with the roadies I hope to really drop some time from OLY and HIM bike legs.

Great races Karen and Dwayne.

I'm so impressed with what this group does to keep up with this stuff and adapt and overcome physical setbacks. The group reminds me of a flag football team I played with one year. Our best runningback had pins holding one knee and and ankle together, our quarterback had one eye that worked and my issues were being too small and a bad receiver. i only showed up to swat passes on defense and enjoy some beers after the game (sometimes during). But we had a blast!

Have a great oly Jennifer. The last finisher gets the best cheering section!

Hi All!
I am back in Florida after a trip to CT for my Dad's service and celebration. Trying not to freak out about how lacking my IM training has been the last 3 - 4 weeks, and will just be getting back into it full speed ahead starting today! Only 11 weeks left of training--yikes!

While I was in CT I was able to get in one swim at a local gym. Hadn't been in the pool for 2 1/2 weeks and felt like a beginner! But used the 910XT for the first time on a swim and loved it. Jumped on a spin bike for 30 minutes after that, but other than that and a trip on rented bikes in San Francisco 2 weeks ago, my biking time has been almost nothing! I also joined up with a running group in CT for a long run Saturday morning. I think runners are the same everywhere--awesome people. I had corresponded via email with someone from the group who gave me the meetup information, and I was looking to get in 8 - 10 miles at a 9 - 9:30 pace (since I don't have hills here and there are hills in CT, I wasn't sure if I could keep up with a faster pace). Well, as happens often with running groups, I ended up with people doing an 8 - 8:30 pace, and got sucked in for 12.5 miles. It was fantastic! Very therapeutic since it was a stressful and emotional trip, so that -kicking was just what I needed!

I've been trying to keep up with everyone's posts, but have missed quite a few. I hope to have time to go back and read your race reports. Congrats to everyone who has been racing and keeping up with your training. I have an Oly this Saturday but of course have no big expectations, it will just be another "practice" race.

Keep up the great work, everybody!

Awesome result Karen!!!

I'm not sure you mentioned it before, but is your PT thinking the calf and PF might be related? You should be rolling out those calves on a foam roller anyway with the PF, but just want to make sure someone mentioned it.

I had an interesting weekend. I'd like to hide in a corner and quietly mention under my breath that I put on 17lbs in the last couple months. It's really embarassing. I guess I'm just bummed out about my foot and not being able to run or race. I just got caught up with the frustration and went back to drinking way too much and pretty much eating anything anyone put in front of me. I had a meeting about it with my coach this weekend. He confirmed what I already thought, which is 2 months no running at all. We are going to focus on next season and specifically the bike/swim for now. Well...the swim as much as I can. (I can't remember a worse year for allergies! I just can't get in the pool with my head pounding and feeling like I could pop it with a damn pin.) My dream of making it to the Vegas HIM championship is "officially" over, since it won't be Vegas for 2014. I may chase it again next season as a secondary. But, my coach would like me to focus on qualifying for ITU worlds since it will be in Chicago. I'm not 100% on board with that yet, but I am leaning towards that. I did qualify for Nationals this season, but won't be able to race it with the PF. So that's where I'm at, I guess. I've got the diet and alcohol back under control so far since this weekend. Hopefully, we can continue and get the weight back off!

Here's the interesting part. My wife, who also races, has really had a tough go this year. Making me embarassed to complain about the PF! She has had a rare allergy to formaldehyde resin. You wouldn't think it, but that stuff is in everything! The allergy has been getting worse the last couple years. She gets allergic reactions and then they turn into major infections. Yesterday, we ended up in the hospital with her, because she ran in the rain. The formaldehyde resin from her wet shoes caused a rash that turned into a staff infection. It's been really frustrating for her. Doctors don't know what to do because there is nothing to desensitize a person for that allergy. She tries to find organic formaldehyde free clothes and shoes. But no company guarantees it. Many stores spray it on apparel in the store so it last longer and doesn't wrinkle on the shelves. Desoto has been helpful to get her shorts/tops to wear and a couple of the running shoe mfg's have helped us. We still can't find any cycling shoes though that will work.

We'll see.

Good luck on Sunday! I am sure they won't pack up before you are done!!! I picked my races last year and this year for exactly the same reason. So, I think it is an excellent idea. I did the B2B half last October with plans of signing up for the full this October. I definitely think it helped give me some confidence by knowing the course and the general area and how things are run. But, I will let you know after October!

My calf has not really bothered me until last Friday - the last time I was at PT. I go tonight and am going to ask them, so I will let you know what they think.

Wow, the part of your post about yourself could have so been written by me! I know exactly how you feel. The last time that I went to PT (last November thru this February), the PT said no running. That was so hard for me and definitely put me in a weird funk. I wish I could say that I only gained 17 pounds I have issues with food anyway (shown by the fact that I have lost well over 100 pounds - and yes, I had that much and more to lose) I am sure that the extra weight doesn't help with the PF, and the PF keeps me from running, which results in extra weight. Sometimes, I feel like I am just going around in circles with no solution and no idea what to do. My weight is a constant struggle for me. I did go meet with my coach last week and that helped some, but I seem to sabotage myself. It sounds like you are moving in the right direction with controlling the drinking and eating. Keep up the good work! Hearing you talk about gaining control gives me hope! Hopefully it will get better for both of us! Oh, and my allergies have been the worst this year. I have never felt this bad!

I can't imagine what your wife is going thru. I had no idea that such an allergy existed or that it could be so bad. I hope she finds the equipment and the products that she needs.
