Got the green light today from the doctor to train.  I've got a herniated C7 disc in my neck and have done NOTHING for 9 weeks.  I still have pain (in my arm) from the herniated disc but I'll find out shortly if s/b/r is gonna make things worse.  If it does, I'll have to stop training and/or have surgery.  So basically I got the go-ahead to "force the issue" with this disc.  I'll be hitting the gym tonight to see how it goes.

That's great news Mike!! I'm sending good training/pain free vibes your way. Just don't jump back in too fast. We'll see you toeing the line in 20.5 weeks.

Check-In:

I've got Powerman Alabama next weekend, but a bout of bronchitis may sideline me.  Training has been looking good even though we have a four week old in the house.  First A race is May 9th Gulf Coast Tri.

Whataya mean 'first A race'?  You can't have two "A" races.  IMKY is your A race and GCT is your B race.....Powerman was your C race.  ;-)

Bernabe - 2009-04-08 11:22 AM A question to all IM veterans: This will be my first 'event' of such length, and I'm using the BT IM training plan. This plan calls for up to 15 hours of training a week... and I'm targeting around 13 hours for the actual IM. Then... I'm spreading around the week the same effort that I'll be making in just one day (a hell of a day )... My question is: Where does the 'magic' happens? Will this training allow me to keep 'pushing' beyond the 3 hour mark (my longest event has been an oly) into the 'unknown'? Triki Triki

The magic is in everything else you do thats not on the training plan.  Enjoy the rest days and spread the effort out.  The main difference for me with training for an IM vs an Oly or even a Half was the wear and tear on the body.  Recovery nutrition, stretching, ibuprofen, ice baths and rest all need to be key parts of your strategy outside of what workouts you do each day.  You wont have too many days longer than 4 hours of training, but come July there will be a couple of monsters with up to 6.5 hours at once!  Have faith in the plan, even though you wont ever put in more time than that in a single day.  You really cant because you need to recover and train again the next day.  Oh and nutrition nutrition nutrition.

It is different for everyone. Right now I am doing about 12-15 hours per week (low volume) this will increase to as much as 30 hours per week. Don't be afraid to make adjustments to the training plan based on how you feel.

Mike... glad to hear it's going well!

I ran my first marathon on Sun. and I'm feeling great today!  I went out for a group ride with my Shop (Whisper Cycles...woot!) and we did a nice 30 miler tonight.  I feel awesome!  I'm figuring that this week is my "recovery week" and then next week I'll be back to my normal training plan.

Good luck Mike.
I've been side tracked with minor injuries but fully plan to start IM training plan on Monday.  There is still snow on the ground here so my first race is still a few months away.

Hey Everyone!  I will officially start my training on Monday...I am very excited about my first IM in August.  I have a question...I know on BT, sometimes there is an organized "training day" before the event...a month or two before...not sure on the details, but did anyone do one last year for IMKY..and is there one in the works for this year by chance?  Also, is the area where the swim for IMKY open for swimming at any time?

I can't believe it's only 20.5 weeks! Time is going to FLY. I feel so behind! Last year I was already doing 3 hour rides. My longest is only 2 hours now.

Did anyone on here by chance do the official training camp thing in Mid-July? I mean, what does $595 really get you?

The company's website looks pretty legit, but I'd love some feedback if anyone did it last year (or if it even existed)

I don't know about that one but I am headed to Coach Troy's camp.....

http://www.coachtroy.com/products/item68.cfm

It's cheaper than $595.00 and I personally like Troy's approach to Ironman racing......just me but the value is strong in this camp....

I didn't participate in the offical camp, but I did go to Louisville twice (two different groups) to ride the bike course and run the course.  It was really helpful for the race.  I would be willing to meet up with people if anyone is interested.

I feel so behind the ball. Trying to follow a plan but debating on getting a coach to lead me in the right direction. I am swimming 2-3 miles with no trouble. The longest bike I have done so far is 50 miles, and I am running my long runs at 12-13 miles with a bit of a struggle (I am not the best runner, and I know that going in). Bricks are going ok last one was 40 and 4. doing a HIM next month. I guess I will see how I do and modify from there. I know doing a half that far away is not ideal, but that is the way things are going. I just feel under prepaired.
Louisville is coming and I just want to be ready.
