imiranda - 2011-08-25 9:50 AM why don't you stay at the host holet (Boradwalk Inn) on condo (Boardwalk Condos)?

It's full.. Boardwalk has hotel and condo section. Most condos are 2/3 bedrooms and don't want to stay in a hotel room and have to eat out every meal.

Last year there was a really, really rough section of road.  If memory serves me it was right around the turn around.  So would be about 50 or so miles into the ride.  Has this been fixed?  It was rough as in like riding on cobblestone.  It vibrated out your cavities.

It really isn't that rough.  NOTHING like cobblestones (ever done St. Anthony's???).  It's just compression cracks.  If you hug the white line the cracks are not as bad.  I have no idea if it's been repaved or not though.

does anyone have a link or can point me to a thread that discusses the best racing tires for this course, or just pros  and cons of different racing tires?

sunbird is fairly close. looks like the advantage there is also that you could walk on the beach to the start as opposed to walking the road. plus, the birthday party would be closer to me! :-) I am at the wharf.

We stayed at St Thomas Square for the Gulf Coast Tri. It's about 1/3 - 1/2 mile away (to the east side). Not sure what's still left, but I got a 2 br and a 1 br, so they might have some options.

OK, one more day left of recovery week.  Why doesn't it feel like it was a recovery week?  I guess it's all perspective, just 2 years ago I would have thought this week was torture

The weekday workouts are a little lighter but the big difference is in the weekend.  Only a 3 hour ride today with a 20 minute run then just an 80 minute run tomorrow.   Enjoy it whole we can.

supposed to run :50 today but torrential downpour and a bit (10-25 knots) of wind are making me think that's not going to happen.

Tomorrow is supposed to be rain all day with 20-25 knot wind so it looks like 5 hours on the rollers. Oh joy.

Good training weekend as well.  Luckily broke out of town and went to Chattanooga where the weather was great.  Did 60 mile bike saturday, and once the legs warmed up felt pretty good.  Back tire was out of true so had to make some on the fly mechanical adjustments to avoid brake and frame rub.

Sunday woke up to 68 degrees and a 12.5 mile run.  Felt like I had enough legs to do more, so that was nice.  Weather helped a lot.  Needed a good training weekend half way through the plan for back 9 motivation and certainly feel good at this point.

Great weekend.  Gotta love recovery weeks as it gives me a few extra hours to do other “stuff”.  I even emptied out all my gear bags and washed them.  Amazing what you find in there.  Things I have been “missing” for a while now, well I found them   Never thought of washing my bags. I always wash my gear after I use it but when I pulled stuff out of my tri bag it stunk.  Come to find out it was my bag.  Duh!

Also rotated the tires on my bike.  I only have 1 bike and 1 set of wheels so I can’t change wheels for the trainer rides.  I use the trainer at least once a week so the back tire was getting a lot more use than the front tire (over the last few months). It also gets worn a little flat due to the roller.

Since I had the bike apart, I gave it a thorough cleaning too.  Washed the wheels and tires, degreased the cassette, chain, rings, etc.  Any place that was “gross”. Amazing what you see when you flip your bike upside down.

All set for the next few months.  This should get me through HIM Augusta.  I already have a new set of tires and tubes for IM Florida but I’d rather not change these out until we get a lot closer to the race.

Have a great week all!

While I was sitting out Irene I cleaned my bike.
Went on a recon drive of my normal long bike course yesterday and ended up riding the rollers for a couple hours because of all the garbage in the road.

As a first timer for IM its helping me to read the variety of training going on...Its always scary feeling I am either behind or doing the wrong sorts of stuff.  All I want in the world is to finish this dang race.  Just this one.  I ran 16 miles last week.  I rode 85 in 4:30....its all slowly coming together.  I hope that as I just keep slogging away I will get through it.  The hardest part is mental.  The long lonely rides and runs are killing me.  I feel like my whole life is just on hold.  I tried to find an ironman video to watch for inspiration but cant seem to find one.  I dont mind the feeling of the excercise...my brain is just bored...funny cuz its the once muscle I hadnt worried about training...

any suggestions how to make it better?  I cant wait for augusta and for the Endurance Concepts training Camp weekend...those will both be fun weekends and tough training which I like...its the other 4-5 weekends I am dreading lol...

Find yourself some local century rides and go do them. If they are on long bike days, great. If they're not, see if you can switch days on your schedule so they are. Then you're not doing 5-6 hour rides alone.

13.5 hours last week which included a 12 mile run, 80 mile bike, and a 4400 yard swim.  Had a good temp run as well.

Labor Day weekend I am traveling to Panama City, Fl to do a workout tri as part of my training.  1 hour swim, 80 on the bike, and 4.5 mile brick.  The portion of the 112 I miss on Saturday I plan on riding on Sunday morning about 35 or so.  Anyone interested let me know.  I have been communicating with the Panama City Running and Triathlon club and I am meeting them at Frank Brown Park in Panama City to do the ride.  They are planning on doing the whole 112 in day I going to stick with training plan and do 80 plus the swim and bike.   I will let the group know how it goes.

Was looking at the map of the course.  On the people that have done the course is there gas stations along the course to stop to fill up with water.  The area looks rural and I was wondering on the availability of water when I ride this weekend.

I am sorry for those that were adversly affected by Irene but.......   Woo Hoo! I was able to take advantage of the Northwest winds blowing straight down Hwy 176 from Columbia to Goose Creek SC for one memorable ride. 84.5 miles in 3:49:20. (22.1 avg.) The first 30 miles were hilly so that kind of equaled out my average but once past the hills I was smokin!. Crazy thing is there are those out there that ride faster than that and don't need a tailwind (I don't get it)  Later that evening I did a 50' ROWS in Lake Murray. Rough Open Water Swim once again thanks to Irene - 50' was a gracious plenty for me. What a way to celebrate my 28th anniversary     ........at least I thought so........

As I recall, there are definitely gas stations at the intersection of 79 and 20 (pretty sure) and 77 and 20 (for sure).  There are definitely places to buy fluids all the way up until you pass 98 going north as well (first 8-9 miles).  I don't specifically recall gas stations anywhere else on the course.

I posted a ride report (from a 2010 course pre-ride) a few pages back on this thread.

I tried to find an ironman video to watch for inspiration but cant seem to find one.

Universal Sports - www.universalsports.com still has last year's Kona video which is great inspiration.  It *did* have IMFL highlights from last year but that seems to have gone now.  There's also some other stuff on other sports that I have watched on the trainer in the past.

As for me I had a bike fit last week which was great .... except for the saddle change.  I now have a Adamo saddle that feels like I'm sitting on a piece of concrete.  I've given it three rides now (2xtrainer, one outside) and I'll give it one last chance this weekend on my long ride .... perhaps Adamos are acquired tastes ?

Otherwise I took a bit of a hit because of Irene - was due to do the 24hours of Booty charity ride in Columbia, MD but that got cancelled so I got to spend 4 hours on the trainer.  (And this after commenting in this thread earlier that I couldn't imagine going longer than a couple of hours indoors).

Looking forward to The Nation's Tri on 11 September down in DC.  Promises to be an emotional day - and I'm not American.

Adrian

It takes a minimum of a couple of WEEKS to get used to.  It takes the pressure off traditionally squished areas...but in the process it puts pressure on areas that are not used to it (but better suited to it).

And everything feels worse on the trainer.

Give it more time.
