Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kenj - 2012-05-07 12:42 PM acv - 2012-05-07 10:18 AM Hey everyone, I didn't get a chance to check in yesterday but I finished the race. Which was my first goal. At about mile 19 I knew I was going to have to readjust my time goal. It was a long race but well worth doing.
Might do it again one day - but not this year.
PS - Thanks for all your inspires, I'll post a race report as soon as I can. Congrats on finishing Adam! Only the race itself can take you to the place most of us go to between miles 20 and 26! It doesn't get easier with the next one, but having the experience will help you get better prepared. You should be proud of your accomplishment!! Recover well! Hopefully next time it will be a little faster! Did I just say next time how soon we forget.......... |

Brian and Steve are also running this weekend and I'm sure they are finishing up in the next day too. So give me your best pre-race tips for keeping nerves in check and staying calm. It's starting to sink in whats ahead. My body wants to jump up and run 12 miles but my mind is going what the heck were you thinking..... Congratulations on your marathon, Adam!!! It sounds like you had a very good race. Hope recovery is going well. Edited by abake 2012-05-07 8:17 PM |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Morning all! I hope those that raced this weekend are recovering well and that everyone's training is going well. I met with my ortho doctor yesterday to go over the results of the MRI. I honestly was expecting the results to be negative and that I had not been patient with giving it the proper time to heal. Unfortunately that isn't what he told me. It turns out that I have torn the cartilage in the shoulder socket and I have a anthroscopy (sp) on May 25th where he will go in and reattach it to the bone with a screw and stitches. The tough part of this is that I will have to keep it in a sling for 4 to 6 weeks after and I can return to biking and running sometime after that. Maybe easy bike on the trainer before but thats about it. He told me the return to swimming is probably going to be much slower, something in the 4 to 6 month range. So, for early summer I will be subbing in running races and some rides for my tri's, and give some back by volunteering to the races I was going to participate in. If the return to swimming is 4 months, IMFL may still be an option, if not I am going to do a fall marathon. There are a couple up here that don't sell out so it will be a pretty easy short term decision to make. Bummed out some, but it is what it is and no sense sulking about it. I guess for the next month or so I will have a lot more time to mentor! (and play around on BT!) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ken, I'm sure it was a bit of a shock to learn the extent of the injury. It sounds like you have a good attitude and are keeping a positive outlook. The nice thing about multisport is that there is always the next season! |
|
![]() ![]() |
Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That's rough news to take Ken. I'm really sorry to hear it.
Sometimes what hurts the most is the best for us. We don't always know it, nor want to accept it. Something good almost always comes out of something we thought was bad.
I had a soft tissue injury when I was 30. Had to have surgery and a loooooong recovery. If you have any questions or need anything Ken, I'm here to help. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kenj - 2012-05-08 5:46 AM Ken, your attitude is fantastic. I'm sorry you'll be out of the tri game for a while. Bummer - I hate that. Take care of yourself and you'll be back in no time. At least you know that it should be fixed soon and you'll be ready to go after that. Thanks for all that you do. |

However, You did the right thing by getting the MRI and having it taken care of right now before the injury becomes any worse. What a great positive attitude you have! Sometimes I forget myself that there is always another race you can do. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had a great night last night. My mom is visiting this week so after the baby went to sleep, my wife and I were able to run together for the first time in over a year. We had a storm come through yesterday that cooled temperatures off and we had a great run. We got 5 miles in - it was her first 5 miles since before being pregnant and I think she was trying to beat me so I think our time was very good (I didn't time us). Anyway, perfect night. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Catching up with all of the recent posts.... Congrats Adam, Brian and Russ on your races! Ken - sorry to hear about the shoulder, but I like your attitude going forward. I'm sure it's a bummer but here's hoping the time off this year will lead to great training and racing for next year's season. I don't have a race report finished, but I completed my first marathon Sunday in Pittsburgh. Finished in 3:12:44 for 133/4600 or so. Happy that I finished it, but really bummed at the same time. I was in prime position to hit my goals at mile 21 when my hamstrings started to cramp/knot up. I had to stop several times to stretch over the last 5 miles and just wasn't able to stride out like I would have liked. Physically otherwise I was ready to keep running my pace but my hamstrings just wouldn't allow it and that was extremely frustrating. Any thoughts on what could have happened and how I can prevent for my next one? |

thanks Steve! Congrats to you too! Regardless your goals that is a K-I-L-L-E-R CRAZY fast 26.2!!! Can't take that away from you bro! For me cramping is always a source of one or two things: 1: Fitness 2: Nutrition IMO your training was incredible! your fitness was there. But being your first attempt at the distance there is always a chance the slightest thing went wrong. I'm sure with more marathons under your belt this would happen less. There is something about mile 20-26.2 that cannot be explained. What your body does in that last 10k can be unpredictable.
What was your nutrition plan? I've been finding I need salt/electrolytes in late stages of races. You may need to fine tune this for you in the future.
CONGRATS on a HUGE run Steve! |

CONGRATS on a HUGE run Steve! In my initial research into this, I wondered about salt/electrolytes. At every aid station past 10 miles, I took gatorade and then some water. At 15 I took a gel and then another one at 20. To be honest going in I didn't have a nutrition plan. At 21 I felt awesome and ready to roll. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ken - so sorry to hear about the extensiveness of your injury - remember its temporary and you will be back in no time! hang in there. Trout - AMAZING RUN!!!! way to get 'r done! Russ - so glad you were able to get out on a run with your wife. some of my favorite workouts are with my hubby - especially when they are unexpected and we have no real goal in mind. Also we usually go out to eat after and that is good too! |

That was a major factor for me. It just got so hot out on the road that I could feel my strength draining away. I used gels on any run longer than 2 hours - I think they helped and I was happy to have them this past Sunday. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had an awesome trail run today!!!! Only around 2 miles, however that is my longest run since October. Still A LOT of ice on the trails (used for xcountry skiing in winter) - the run just left me wanting more - can't wait for the next long run and to explore the extensive trail system in the Anchorage area. |
