brigby1 - 2013-05-09 3:57 PM Gotta love IM night at Masters. Except for the part where I took in a huge amount of water late in the fly of a 200 IM. Actually had to stop the set and hang on the rope for a minute, it was that bad.

My fly is laughable, it's like an underwater set there is no height obtained at all.  We had a kid in our lane Thomas who is 13 shoulda seen the height out of the water on the fly.  BUT that pull/band set - I wiped the floor with him.  Boys and their sinking legs!

Normally I do fairly well with fly, fully expecting to make 50's just fine. Happened to catch that phantom wave from nowhere on that one. I do have the sinking legs issue, so balance has been important there. Band was very helpful for that!

It's all in the shoulder and upper body strength for me - clearly don't have much!  Pull and band I'm great in fact my coach said why not use those for IM Jojo!  My kick slows me down.  Dammit.  Yet in a stand alone kick set I'm so speedy.

amd723 - 2013-05-08 6:33 PM Do any of the manatees race n a tri suit? I use tri shorts and a tri top, but there is a big sale on tri suits which got me wondering how I'd like using one. So, if you use or have used one what do/did you like or dislike about them? Also, do they make better sense for short or long courses or does it matter?

I like tri suits. I have a long torso, and they can pull a bit, but at least I don't end up with an exposed stomach.

I've only tried on one. I didn't like it. I have a short torso...and I looked like a sausage. Sealed

And I saw this today. Thought of Jen in particular, but for all the Manatee mommies (be it kids or critters) this weekend. My daughter loved it, and I heard that theme song more times in 5 minutes than I did in a year of watching the show!

That's awesome. I want one.

And to sweeten the deal... the Wonder Woman is a magnet Laughing

HAHAHA! Memory lane.

Nice score, Jo!

Hokas or Moons, either would be a step up (literally?!), the way I dress.

Too bad they're not available and cheap here, otherwise I would try them. I seem to fit into the GENERAL (lots of outliers of course) demographic that does really well with them--heavy (for my height), likes to run, could use a little bit of center-of-gravity foot landing help, and arthritic (not gonna say older).

Had PT visit #1 today for the knee.  Been out walking the last couple days.  After 3/4 mile the knee acts up again.  This needs to get better soon!  I have a good shot at going under an hour on my first tri if I can run something decent.  I'll be doing frequent walking to try to evaluate things.

The PT taped my knee up to see if the Patella tracking is the issue.  We'll see.  All I know is we're going to rip some mega hair off when it's time for the tape to go.  Time to start shaving!

I'm glad that you saw the PT but I'm sorry that this has been dragging on for you. Hang in there!

Janyne, let's say that it takes me until the end of this month to fully recover.  Do you think that I'll be able to ramp up my run in time for the marathon in October?

Yes. Any longer and you may need to adjust your goals for the race.

It's probably Salty's opinion that you want here though!

Wow. At work using the computer to post. Shhhhh.... can't tell anyone.  The interface is a lot nicer on a computer.

Ok, back to the little boys.  When I was a surfer, I was called a c*** by a 12-year old in the line up.  Funny, he wasn't that cocky in the parking lot where I yelled and threatened to spank him.  That was that story.  Very unsettling to hear the youngsters talk like that!

My sweet momma has been suffering with neck pain and high blood pressure and we have been spending a lot of time with our favorite ER docs until early in the morning like 4:00 am early.  I've been sleep deprived and grumpy, but heading over to swim right now. I promise I will work out more this week if I can keep her from having a set back.

Here was my question.  I love a long workout.  Like an hour. If I have to put on a suit, shower, swim, shower again and then do all the grooming redo, I want to make it worthwhile. The sprint tri workouts are so short! Is it ok to just do long workouts or should I really stick to those times.  Sometimes it doesn't feel worth it to wake up at 5:00 am to swim for 20 minutes.

What say you?

Renee

I see no problem swimming for a longer period of time. In fact, I think it's a good thing.

+1

Strange, not able to post on the forum on google chrome, no "reply" button.

Anyway, my bio, finally....

NAME: Richardsdrr/Darren

STORY:I used to be reasonably fit in the past, when I was serving in the infantry, but 12 years of a sedentary  life style had piled on the pounds. I saw a photo of my self at a wedding I was attending and was disgusted by the lump hanging over my belt. So, in October 2012, I stopped smoking and had a look around for some sort of long term goal to keep me on the straight and narrow and shed a few pounds along the way. After a bit of googling I found an event being held in my home country, Wales(Cymru Am Byth), called The Brutal. Basically, what I now know is that what I was looking at was a double iron man distance event. Great, I thought. A bit too much for me to take on at the moment, so what can I do on the run up to it? That is when I discovered the hidden world of triathlon (fairly hidden in our country unless you go looking for it). I then spent the last winter starting training, reading as much as I could and aquiring kit as soon as finances would allow.

FAMILY STATUS: Married (Hannah) with two sprogs, Emmylou(4-5), Finley(3) and one beast, Lucy (4, St Bernard)

CURRENT TRAINING:Been stopping and starting a lot. Sometimes to do with niggles/injuries, sometimes lack of motivation, sometimes life getting in the way. Hey, I'm still learning, so my training regime is not perfect, but it's getting better. And at least I'm getting out.

THIS YEAR'S RACES:
I have my 1st tri on the 19th of this month Surprised which is the Llanelli sprint. 800ows/30km/5km.
Next will be another sprint in June 500ows/20km/5km.
Then the biggie that I'm doing for charity in July, which consists of a 3.8km ows on the Friday. A 112 mile bike on the Saturday. And a marathon on the Sunday.
To finish off, I have an olympic tri in September.

BODY COMPOSITION:till got a nice layer of blubber on me, but then, I'm never gonna get a six pack. When I was in the Army I was under my BMI and was the lightest I have ever been, but still could pinch an inch. I have lost about 21-24 lb since starting my little escapade in October.

Wait you have a St Bernard ?!!!  Gorgeous, handy if you get lost in Snowdonia.

Next thing we'll need a Pet Gallery!

Any peeps had any probs with garmin holding their charge? I have done a fair amount of googling on the subject and a lot of the advice given is full charge/fully de-charge/ fully recharge +1 hour/ repeat.

My FR410 has been giving me about 4-4.5 hrs of use on a full charge. Various sites say this should be 12-8 hrs per charge. After not getting any joy with the charge/de-charge exercise, and completing a few resets on the watch, I sent off for a replacement battery and soldered it in on the watch(wouldn't advise it, very tricky). But, the new battery is giving the same amount of usage time as the original battery. Which leads me to believe either something is causing extra drainage on the battery, or the software in the watch is corrupt and it's not recognising the full charge.

Just wondered if anyone has had any experience of this.

I have not had this specific problem, however, when I have had problems with my Garmin, three things have helped.

  1. Soft reboot (hold down the start & reset button)
  2. Clearing the history (I just clear it weekly now)
  3. Hard reboot (PitA because you need to re-pair your HRM strap, cadence sensor, etc. and reset all settings including screen look/feel, and so on and so forth).  This basically takes it back to factory settings.
Tried number 3 last night. Still no joy. Guess this leaves me 4 options. No.1 buy a new garmin. No.2. Only race/train for runs/rides that are sub 4.5 hrs. No.3. HTFU and learn to go further in that 4.5 hrs (might struggle with IM ) No.4. Buy a footpod, turn off the gps and rely on the pod and cadence sensors for data collection. Cast your votes...........

We'll need more information in order to make a good recommendation:

  • Have you contacted Garmin about the issue?
  • Do you use this on your bike as well?

Ha, I don't flip turn either.  I try every now and again, but I just look like a dork so I quit

So forgot to mention this about my run today.  I was on my way home from work, when I noticed a bald eagle soaring near my house.  This is a little odd--I have seen them in the park about 3km from my house fishing, but not this close.  Maybe flying over, but not soaring.  Anyway, had a smile and kept driving.  So I am out on my run, about halfway through, and I see two balds and two either golden or immature balds.  All soaring.  One of the golden/immature was antagonizing one of the balds, they were twisting and turning in the air.  I stopped my run to watch for several minutes.  So cool.

Very, very nice  surprise gift from Mother Nature.  She's a great gal!

Does  a two hour leisurely ride around town on my beach cruiser count as a workout?   It did include hills and such and a tour of the water front homes and one bike repair in the field.

Oh, by the way, my odometer said it was a tad over 25 miles.

Time for a brew and to watch the sun set.    May is a lovely time here abouts.

I would post a picture but by now I'm stink smelly and all disheveled.   Got some looks because I was dressed the part.   Board shorts and a Hawaiian shirt.    Bare foot, too.

Cheer up my dearest Yanti.   Might be time to return the favour of a picture or two.

Sounds like an absolutely wonderful workout, MadMath!  Nice wardrobe choice as well

Wooo boy, I got to do my first "real" track workout since the marathon. I was told to hold back one group for the main workout which was a 4 mile tempo, doing the last mile about 10 seconds faster than the other 3. I was kind of ho-humming because my legs felt just SHOT because I swear, Yanti is trying to kill me with this OLY stuff. Anyway, I HTFUed and did the damn workout.

We did:

6:56
6:55
6:55
6:46

THEEEEN, we did 5 x 200. OMG I haven't even run 200 before. I felt like my legs finally came alive, they were:

Bizzee bizzee Manatees! As usual.

JO whatever happened to your hematoma?! Argh.

I will find many more ways to blather about myself ridiculously but for now ...

TYRE or TUBE CHANGING / FLAT FIXING PRACTICE

just a friendly reminder. I swapped out a tyre* in the middle of my long ride to practice it when I was hot, wet, dizzy, tired--i.e. similar to race conditions.

Time from me getting off the bike to back on: 4min 40sec. Not shabby, not great, would be less if I didn't use a pump, would be more if I had to fish things out of a saddle bag.

*not the tube, so the opposite of what you'd usually have to do to fix a flat but pretty much the same sequence. I wanted to put a dedicated trainer tyre on.

39
38
38
35
38

All of this just makes me happy in every way.
