Yo ... Mike.  Looks like our old group finally fizzled out.  Nice to see you heading up a group ... hope there's room for one more:

MY STORY: I'm 56 and a few years back had allowed the couch to creep up me and pour the weight on.  I started cycling in earnest and did my first Tri in 2011.  I’ve done 2-3 races per year since, but last year only did one.  I’m passionate about skiing, cycling and golf.

FAMILY STATUS: Married for 37+ years with 3 daughters.  All daughters are out of the house, so the wife and I are empty nesters.  The daughters and I still enjoy skiing and snowboarding together.  The oldest daughter is a runner and has competed in several runs.  The daughters and I will race together in a sprint tri this March.

CURRENT TRAINING: All three sports ... albeit not as much time as I'd like due to work, and family.  I looove cycling - enjoy swimming - and endure running.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: The daughters and I will compete in the Azalea Sprint in March and I'll plan to do 2-3 more this year, albeit it's undecided where and when at this point.

Ciao ... Dorm

Anna - Great race report! And a nice swim and not bad run either. For your swim were you wearing a wetsuit? And, how clear was the water?

Scott - No chance you could borrow a decent bike for the first event or two? Have you looked at the classifieds here on BT forum? You should go to a couple bike shops and test ride a bike or two to see what you like.

Tay - Nice bike ride yesterday and nice improvement. I always like to see when I'm improving even in small increments.

Gary - Thanks for the bike pic - very nice! Glad you got in a ride. I'd love to feel the difference between your old bike and the new one.
And, Thanks for the February stats. Way to go Tay, Aaron and Greg.

Dorm - Welcome to the group.

All - I had a good swim today. It started out slow and I felt a bit sluggish but we worked our way through a warm-up and drills then our coach sprung a 300m TT on us. I started off a bit too fast so I slowed myself down. I didn't have a sense of feeling fast or slow but I kept up the pace and even lapped a fellow who was swimming too slow. When I finished I was really surprised when the coach told me my time was 6:38 (2:12/100m) down 16secs from my last TT. Not fast swimming but nice improvement.

Gary, thanks for taking the time to do the stats, and congrats to those on the podium! I'm a solid middle-of-pack kinda gal and it shows . Happy with that, though, and my goal for March is to get 10% on top of the Feb numbers. Little steps!

Dorm, hello! I look forward to chatting and training with you.

George, the swim was too warm for a wetsuit, water temp 25.2C so was really quite nice. It's in a sheltered bay, salt water so I felt very buoyant, if I had a wetsuit I'd be quite unbalanced I think. The water was reasonably murky but no jellyfish, which for me is the most important bit. Nice work on the time trial, by the way!

Hi All!

I am interested in joining and was wondering if there is still room.

A bit about me...

My name is Nicole, I am 29 and live in Baltimore, MD. I have always had the goal of doing a triathlon but never found the motivation to get started (I always blamed not having enough time, but in all honesty I was just being lazy). I have always been an athlete and very active. I swam competitively in elementary school, played a lot of team sports growing up (soccer, softball, basketball, volleyball) and ran in high school and college (middle distance mainly, but they made me run XC too). I find that it's harder to get motivated to work out when I am not working towards something. Starting in December I made the decision to focus on myself (I was dating a lot and getting nowhere), so I am trying to eat healthier and I am focusing on my training. I also play volleyball competitively, as well as some social sports (football, kickball), that also end up being pretty competitive.

FAMILY STATUS: Single :-)

CURRENT TRAINING: I started my training a month ago but have not been consistent lately. It's been cold and snowy here, which is an easy way for me to make and excuse not to get to the gym. Until the weather warms up, I am taking cycling classes...not sure if this is equivalent though...thoughts? My first time back in the pool (Feb 4th) was rough, but this morning I swam 5 x 250m and felt really good. As for running, I can't run on a treadmill (it hurts my shins, and I have a history of stress fractures so I'm always careful), so I've been getting outside whenever it warms up a bit.

2014 RACES: I am doing a sprint tri down in ATL at the end of June...wanted to do something earlier, but I'm using it as an excuse to visit a friend and this was the best option. Earlier races around here are all pool swims, so I might do one as a practice for the real thing. I also plan on running the Columbia IronGirl in August. I thought it was an Olympic distance for some reason, but it's not, so later in the year I want to find an Olympic Distance one somewhere (possibly San Diego).

WEIGHT LOSS: About this time last year I was feeling really bad about myself. I realized I had let my weight get up to the highest it had ever been. I joined Weight Watchers and lost about 15 lbs. I have gained a little back, but hope that now that I'm really focusing on training I will get it back down and get toned.

I'm excited to learn more about everyone here and learn more about training in general!

Okay so my first 2 questions:

1) What are FOPs and BOPs?

2) Is a cycling/spin class a good substitute for an outdoor ride? I've been doing that since it's cold and icy here, but wasn't sure exactly how to judge distance and such, and if it's going to translate to outdoor once it warms up.

Happy hump day everyone!

Sorry for the lingo FOP-Front of the Pack, BOP-Back of the pack. and also MOP- middle of the pack. Dont let it intimidate you on your first sprint i am sure you will do well. Finish safely without injuries is what matters the most and ofcors always have fun

Yes in this kind of coldwinter majority of us does spinning.I personally still use my indoor trainer for 1 hr.rides, for long rides i dont know how they manage it indoors.

The dreadmill have been useful to us all

Cheers!!!

Spinning is way better than sitting on the couch but not quite as good as riding your bike on a bike trainer or outside. Your position on the spin bike will be different than your position on your bike.

What other questions do you have?

Welcome, Nicole!

There are some excellent beginner articles in the beginner tab of the red bar at the top of most pages (I had no idea what FOP or any of that was until I read the article on tri lingo).

On a frustrating note for me, joined a gym a few weeks back to get some swimming in and, of course, the pool heater breaks down at the beginning of last week - supposed to be fixed today - now it's not until next week. And swimming is my worst discipline by far. Hopefully it gets resolved next week. Guess I can just add an extra run and bike in.

Hi Nicole, Welcome to the group. I have a spin group I ride with every Tues/Thurs and Sat. Sat is a 2.5hr class. Our coach says each hour on the trainer in a good class is equal to about 1.5hrs out on the road. I'm not sure how accurate that is but I know the sessions we ride are pretty hard. Last night I rode 25+ km in an hour (15.5mph) and by the end I had nothing left, I was sweating profusely and my tongue was hanging out (not really). I looked pretty rough but when I looked around the class everyone else was beet red, sweating and breathing just as hard as me. it was great.

If I didn't have my bike trainer group to ride with I'd wind up doing nothing all winter. However, I won't be sad when we finish the sessions and I can ride outside again.

All - I've had computer troubles for a couple days so I'll have to get caught up tomorrow. I did have a pretty good swim again today and a good run as well.

George

I dont know how do you do it in your spin class?? do you use the gyms spin bikes or BYOB and they have trainers. Must be a tough mental training?
You are sweating profusely i maybe Swearing Profanely ( being candid) subjected to that sufferfest.

I can die of boredom doing a metric century on a 5 mi loop, but i cant last more than 1.5 hours on an indoor trainer or spin bike.

Anyway glad your getting your mileage indoors.

Cheers!!!

Thank you all for the welcome and the helpful information!

Rich - I will definitely check out those articles! Have to make sure I can speak the language!

I don't think I have any other questions at this time, but I will definitely let you know as they come to me (I am sure I will have plenty!)!

It's supposed to warm a bit around here this weekend so I'm hoping to get a good run in. Also gonna take my bike in for a tune up so I'm in good shape for even warmer weather. Hope you all get some warmth as well!

First race for me this year is Saturday.  It will be a 'fun' event as I'm doing this along with my 3 daughters and 1 SIL.  This event is sort of special to me as it's the first tri event I participated in, and I've done this one every year since.  It will be hi -40's in the morning and warming, but I'm a little concerned for the bike leg about being cold.  I know (as I've said this to people myself) it doesn't take long to warm up on a bike, but still ...

I have a long sleeve Reebok compression shirt and thought to wear this in the pool.  I've worn sleeveless tri-tops before, but wondered if ones here had worn something like the Reebok, if it slowed swim times, or was overall too much of a nuisance instead of a benefit.

Love to see your thoughts ...

Carl - In our cycling sessions everyone brings their own bikes, trainers, towels, shoes and you need a bike computer to know your speed/cadence and HR. Everyone also brings a water bottle (two and snacks on Sat.). It really makes a difference having other people to "ride" with.

If you've tried any spinervals I find the class gets me working out about 10% harder because the coach pushes us harder than I would push myself. Not to mention having the scheduled sessions keeps me going consistently.
Just out of interest our coach is an Aussie expat (for Anna and cadnams).

My bike ride tonight was a little easier than we've had in awhile because I was able to keep up and even do a bit more than he demanded of us.

Dorm - Have fun on Saturday.

Hi Nicole! Congratulations on making the decision to focus on yourself, and especially choosing such an enjoyable and challenging sport .  We don't have a lot of spin classes around here (never been to one, and I'm actually a bit confused as to what they do), generally gyms will have a couple of stationary bikes and you just do your own thing, or follow a pre-set program. I'd be interested to try a spin class, they sound like hard work, but fun. George--us Aussies get everywhere!

Dorm, I totally hear you on the bike being cold. I generally freeze on the bike in lower temperatures, any warming I get from the activity is whipped away by the breeze, my hands and feet go numb and it's generally not a lot of fun. I'm not sure if riding in a wet long-sleeved top would be helpful, unless it's something that dries out very quickly. Could you wear a short tri  top for the swim then just throw a dry long sleeved windjacket on in transition?

I've had an interesting week for training this week. Had a day off after the sprint on Sunday, then ran (slow speed session with the club) Tuesday, then short bike and some strength Wednesday. I didn't train Thursday morning as I was starting a new job, but finished early, so I thought I'd try and fit my long run in in the afternoon. Well, that was a mistake! I don't know if it was due to being at work all day, or having had lunch (I usually train early morning on an empty stomach), or maybe the temperature (29 deg C,  84F) or even still not being recovered from the tri, but I could barely move. Started out OK, then my legs felt like lead, every step jarred through my knees and back, I kept scuffing my shoes as I couldn't pick my feet up. My heart rate was fine, stayed in low zone 2, but I could barely keep myself moving. Eventually I made it round the circuit, but man, it was hard work! I've given myself a few days off after that effort, maybe I'll try a bit of a walk/jog or better still, a swim tomorrow.  I must admit, it's confused me a bit. Does anyone else get that sort of complete muscle fatigue from training at a different time of day/different conditions?

Dorm,

I do have an idea :-). For cold tris I use arm warmers. That way you can swim in your tri top and have the arm warmers rolled down so you tick your hand in them then unroll them up your arms. That's way easier than trying to get a shirt on a soaking wet body.

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
