Question for the Stravaholics.  How many of you sign up for the challenges?  If you do, do you find that they help you in any way?

I usually sign up for the monthly run/ride ones, more so I can see where I am at a glance for the month when loading up (yeah, there are a hundred ways to do that, but these are where my brain goes).

I've found that they do give me a push every now and again.  It was in my head on today's run.  It also has helped push me on some tempo pace runs (for the 10k challenge).  To me, they're like monthly tests, without a scheduled race...

Not as bad as knowing where segments are - that has blown up more than one workout for me on the bike!

I used to but I found that they tend to make me break out of my planned training and generally made me worse off.  Except if the challenge lines up very close to what I'm doing already, then it's a freebie.

I sign up for them but don't change anything about my training because of it.  I just see where I end up with the training I do.  If I didn't have a coach I'd probably be a lot more tempted to push myself with them.

I haven't done it on Strava yet, but use the same thought process towards various types of challenges.

Well, I've returned from the wonderful Caribbean and I'm less than pleased with this Pennsylvania weather that I've returned to.

I start my coaching formally tomorrow, however this will be a lighter week as I work next weekend.

Hey, How did everyone's January go? I was pretty pleased with mine and also broke 100 miles running for the 4th straight month:

Swim: 17h 45m - 44800 YdBike: 5h 25m 01s - 106.42 MiRun: 13h 04m 01s - 100 Mi

I was over 100mi running in Dec, and 160 for Jan... so I'm pretty satisfied with that.

Unfortunately we have snow here right now... I'll be happy when it clears up.

Hey Fred welcome home!My January was good.Swim: 11h 39m 37s - 40800 Yd ~~Bike: 10h 35m - 220.5 Mi ~~ Run: 21h 04m 14s - 140.84 MiI have run consistently since the 28th of December 2013. And my feet couldn't be happier. I did a 5k TT and stuck sub 7 pace. My swim is pretty fast for only swimming 3x per week. My 100' s are 1:teens, 500's are hitting 6:50's and 800's are 11:50 all in sets with little rest. All pretty much moderate hard efforts. I want to try a little more rest to see what speed I could pull out of that. Bike well its a trainer and it's more power than I started. I can wait to see what kind of tri animal Shane turns you into.

Matt, I do them they push me somewhat. When I signed up for the January 100k run I added my own personal goal. That was to run every day with a run of over 30 minutes in length. So I will wear that shirt with honor. I want to do more challenges on Strava but my training plans can make it not practical. Remember I AM a triathlete. I swim, bike and run. Unlike those goals in Strava they focus on a single event. Some are easy to hit and still maintain the other disciplines. One on Strava I wanted to do last year came out a week before IMLP. It was to successfully climb 7,235m (23,737ft) within the challenge period (July 14th - July 21st). If I didn't have LP I would have been all over that.

Welcome back!  We're heading to Nevis on Friday and I can't wait.  NO SNOW OR ICE!

January was a great training month for me - biggest yet, in terms of hours.  Helps to be unemployed (or, more accurately, less employed) at the moment.    There were a couple times that race season was a loooong way away and I felt like I was missing out on too many non-workout things, but that's passing as the season gets closer.

Swim: 12h 50m 20s - 38325 Yd   Bike: 17h 12m 40s - 289.03 Mi   Run: 18h 14m 04s - 131.31 Mi   Cross-Country Skiing : 1h 01m

For me, the above is a good balance (shifted from a run focus aiming at a March HM to balanced tri, as I decided I like racing tri's better - We're still doing a bunch of road races, but they won't be "A"s).

We'll see how February and April go, with travel.  And who knows what it'll be like with a new job (or when that'll happen).  Good for now, though.

Matt

How was the trip??I got 335 miles of running in as part of my marathon build. Will likely pull back a bit and focus on quality now. We got about 3" of snow yesterday. Enough to slow me waaaaay down. Also, it delayed the bus enough it was faster to just run home than to wait around in the cold snow.

Fred, that's a lot of time in the pool, well done!

I had a pretty good January as well

Swim: 4h 45m - 14450 M (I suck at getting to the pool at 5:30am)
Bike: 13h 34m 52s - 380.76 KM
Run: 18h 33m 47s - 215.08 KM

Oddly enough with those numbers, it was a bike focus.    The runs were all just easy paced runs with no intensity at all while the bike was all hard, focused efforts trying to raise FTP.   Even with the running being all easy efforts, the pace of those easy runs has gotten 15-30s/km faster than this time last year or even compared to last summer.  I'm pretty happy with how things are going.

I do. 4 days a week or so. I have run high mileage without run commuting but I really like the two birds approach.

Finally back on my tri bike again as I've got my first TT coming up in 2 weeks.  Man...I forgot just how uncomfortable that thing is when I'm not used to it.  Also finally ordered the disc cover for my 404 rear as my GF will be using the PT wheel with disc cover that I had been TT'ing on up to this point.

whoo-whee - Adrienne, I feel like I had a pretty good month, but now I am afraid to total it up because your run miles just MIGHT be more than my run and bike combined! Your logs really are great to watch - thanks for keeping them open - very motivational. How many hours total did you run in January?

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
