Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business
I'm finally breaking down and accepting the fact that I need an swift kick in the butt on occasion to get me moving, and this seems to just the right group for that.

Name: Mike

Story: A few years ago I realized that after almost 35 years of contact sports (football for 10, rugby for the rest) my prime playing days were over. When playing on the same team as kids I used to coach, and having them run circles around me, I knew it was time for something different. Triathlons had always intrigued me, so I thought I'd give it a go. I did my first, an Xterra, in 2010 and was instantly hooked. Unfortunately, my schedule over the last few years hasn't been very conducive to consistent training, and my results have shown it. 2015 promises to be different! I got rid of not one, but 2 businesses, and now work only 3-4 nights per week, leaving me with a little more free time. My knees are screaming at me, but they've been doing that for years, so screw 'em. I've been trying to eat less, and better, to get my weight down. When I was actively playing rugby I was a fit 215-220. Currently I'm hovering around 190 and working to drop another 5-10lbs.
Coincidentally, my sister started doing triathlons at exactly the same time as I did, completely independently of each other, so we get to nag each other all the time. Each year I have travelled to the east coast so we can do a triathlon together. As an aside, there's a lot to be said for living in Colorado and competing at sea level. Sweet, sweet oxygen.

Family status: Married for almost 16 years, 1 daughter still at home with 2 grown and out of the house.

Training: I've been following an Olympic distance plan I got from Training Peaks a few years ago, although trying to adapt it to my schedule is challenging. One thing I have discovered about training plans is that they don't work very well by simply posting them on the wall. You have to actually go out and do all the workouts. I'm working on that part. I do tend to concentrate on the cycling portion, not only because I enjoy it the most, but because I also to more cycling races and events in general.

2015 races: At least one Xterra, 4-5 sprints, possibly one Olympic, multiple centuries, and hopefully an off-road half marathon in September.

Beer preference: One rule- you should never be able to see through your beer. For IPA's, the more bitter (bitterer?) the better, but give me a good stout or porter any day. Current top of my list is New Belgium Salted Chocolate Stout. Mmmm, mmmm, good. Luckily I have around 30 breweries within 15 miles of my house. Choices abound. This is a perfect group for me because of the Coors Light penalty. The very thought of consuming a Coors Light at any temperature fills me with a horror so profound that I would do just about anything to avoid it.

6.25 miles at 56:13. a 9.00/mil pace. starting to feel a little better.

Only 185 minutes this week, but 2 hours of bicep curls during todays game might make up the difference!

Wow, been reading for quite a while trying to catch up with the posts, looks like you all are doing well!

- glad to hear surgery went well Scott
- thanks for the link to triathlon with a busy schedule, I travel 2 to 4 days almost every week from now till May, so very useful!
- my vote goes for BIKE shirt, but will be happy with whatever as a group agree
- today I had my HM, first race of the year. Have been fighting with a flu for almost 2 weeks now (this year the viruses are much harder to get rid of them, risk of pneumonia is higher even in younger people if fever is maintained), so still not recovered, but decided to give it a try. I was running with two very good friends, in case I felt too bad and had to quit. But I am quite stubborn, and the trail was beautiful, all out of the city and not too tough. I did suffer the first 3k, but then started to feel better and better and finished in 1.55. Also discovered how good it is to try coke at the water stations, never tried before but read hear about it, and was fantastic. A gel at km 16 also was very helpful.

Hope you all have a great week!
Juan

I did my long slow run today. 7.23 miles/85 mins. My training partner and I made sure to throw some extra hills into it at the end since our 10 Mi race at the end of March felt like it was on the side of a mountain last year. I don't want that run to kick my butt this year.

230/200 for the week so no CLP for me. What is the plan for next week?

Nice job! I love flat coke as fuel- perfect mix of sugar and caffeine. I've never seen it at a race, though!

I would love to try an Xterra one day... What kind of vibe do they have at their races?

I did my long run for the week (12 miles) today. It was 2 so-so miles, 8 great ones, and 2 that got progressively worse and just felt like torture. Part of it was that the snow had turned to wintry mix (side note: why are all the winter storms scheduled during my long runs? LOL) but my feet hurt so bad, which is a new thing for me.
A few possible reasons: I only did 9, instead of 11, last week because I ran out of time. It took me at least as long as 11 should take because there was so much ice/ snow, but that was a 33% jump for my long run.
Also, my calves and shins had been starting to get sore. I've dealt with shin splits in the past, and got a stress fracture during failed training for a marathon years ago, so I dropped one of my short (3-mile) runs and rested. Today I wore compression socks on the run and it seemed to help the calves, at least while I was running. But they are thinner so that might have led to the sore feet.
Right now... oh.my.goodness I am sore. 6 miles is on the plan for tomorrow but I'm going to play it by ear. I'm doing the Hal Higdon Intermediate 1 program, but might step down to the Novice 2 if it's too much. Next week is a step-back week (long run of only 9 miles) and I'll see how I feel after that.
Enjoy the superbowl, everyone!

This beer is so elusive that you need to be on multiple twitter feeds of the delivery drivers in the towns surrounding the brewery in Vermont, just to get a hold of a few cans. So much so that locals have made a living buying it and selling it on ebay at a profit. And yet it seems everyone I know has tried it. I've never even seen an empty can :D

On the vote - 1st bike jersey
2nd tech tee
distant 87th cotton t-shirt

Still trying desperately to get out of the house to the gym tonight. I've lost hours of work the past couple days just clearing the house, mailbox, and fire hydrant out and I'm trying to make up for it (yeah I know, get back to work instead of posting here!). Seriously the piles of snow the plows put on top of the hydrant are taller than me.

John - I'm just catching up on the post I've missed over the last couple of days. But get this... Here is why my wife is the greatest wife on the planet. Here is a conversation I had with Heidi two weeks ago about Heady Topper...

DQ - Crap, I'm down to my last can. (of heady topper)
HQ - You should drive up to VT over the break and stake out some grocery stores
DQ - I'd love to but I don't know if I could find any if I went up for the day.
HQ - Stay up there until you find some. It's your vacation. You should do what makes you happy.
DQ - Really?
HQ - Really! Heady topper makes you happy
DQ - I love you honey
HQ - I know.

I have a question for the group. Next week is supposed to be my recovery week. However, I know the following week I have to travel for work. The meetings I'm going to are 8am through late dinner meetings - so very limited workout time.

So, I'm temped to skip a week ahead in my plan next week for a build week and use the recovery week the following week during my trip. I've done this before in previous years - and it seems to work better than the alternative. What are your thoughts?

Kate - I think it depends on how you feel at the start of the week.

If you feel good and aren't terribly sore - then do it. The extra time off next week should heal any damage you do by going an extra week.
If you are a little sore, go hard for the first half of this week but avoid the long workouts on the bike and run towards the end of the week.
If you are really sore, take it easy for the next two weeks.

Enjoy your trip and safe travels!

I'm still here! A big thanks to 5th for calling me on my sack of a$$ness...

Since wrecking my car on Wednesday, I've been off track with my workouts. I got back into the pool today and managed to also get in enough aquajogging to not feel guilty about eating like a champ tonight. Falling shy of the 200 minutes = coors light for the superbowl....

I've spent the last 3 days test driving cars. I've got it narrowed down to the following used cars (in this order): 1) VW Jetta 2) Ford Focus 3) Honda Civic, 4) Mazda3. Any thoughts?

417/200 for the week. Solid training week but disappointed I didn't get my 3 swims in. Only did 1. I spoke to the coach of my tri team and am seriously thinking of hiring her as my coach. It would open 3 coached athlete swims a week to me plus provide huge accountability. Guess I'll decide over the next week or so but in a way my mind is leaning to the direction of yes.

I agree 100% with your thoughts on flip turns right up until that last sentence. I've never learned them because of the points you made. I learned to swim in the Boy Scouts and there weren't any ways in the lakes and rivers at camp.

As for your family first comment, that's where I've been for the last few days. My oldest, who just turned 13, had a basketball tournament in Miami. 4 hour drive, 7 games over a 29 hour period, then another 4 hours in the car. The best part, the boy's team went undefeated and won the tourney.

Yes. That was the '13 race. My team, soon to be my private, coach is the one that puts on the race. Angie Ferguson. I also did it this year and have my room booked again for '15. If you do/did it and see/saw all of the Geared Up people in her team kits one of them would have been me

Nice workouts and nice race Juan!

Welcome Mike!

DQ - I have a Jetta sportwagen TDI that I love! I often gets close to 50 MPG and it accelorates well and I'd fun to drive. A bike or three on the roof really messes with fuel economy though.

I thought of you guys when the Budwiser Ad came on (it would have been perfect if it was a Coors lite ad).

I had a great Avery Out of Bouds stout at lunch Saturday mid ski day that totally hit the spot. Snuck in a swim after skiing. Swimming at altitude is a total butt kicker! The rec center we hit is around 8500 ft.

I have done that race all four years it's been going. Absolutely love it! The first year of the race, I had my best AG finish, 4th. Normally I race in the Clydesdale division but that they still haven't added that group yet. The first few years we stayed at the Holiday Inn on Sanibel but last year stayed at South Seas. What a difference on race morning! I guess I should get my reservations in soon.

Alright, lots to catch up on...

- I vote vote a bike jersey. Not sure what these "long sleeved shirts" you speak of are.
- Made my group ride this week, no emergency coverage calls.
- Had a really good interval run.
- Made a 500 mile round trip run to Miami for my oldest son's basketball tournament. Spent 8 hours in the car and then watched 7 basketball games in a 29 hour period. Good news - my son's team went undefeated and won the tourney.
- I did hit 10 pounds lost BEFORE the trip to Miami, currently at 286.4 which is 9.5 pounds since Jan. 1st.
- Met our weekly goal with 275/200 minutes logged this week.
- I'm one week out from my first race, the Sarasota Music Half Marathon, and I know it's going to hurt. Training hasn't been where it needs to be.
- My brag, I found the wagon I fell off of last year.

January's totals
Swim: 1h 05m 29s - 2900 Yd
Bike: 5h 03m 35s - 73.9 Mi
Run: 14h 36m 04s - 62.88 M

Dave- I've done XTerra Lory 3 out of the last 5 years (it is conveniently located 10 minutes from my house), and have found it to be very laid back. The more experienced folks are very helpful with beginners, of which there are many, and it is very well organized. And they finally moved the date up to May after discovering that the water level in Horsetooth Reservoir goes down A LOT in August.

Not pleased that I missed my own 200 min goal. However we did say we can avoid the CLP due to injury correct?

I used a vacation day on Friday to spend the day in the mountains with my 6 & 7 year olds. Chasing them thought the trees, it turns out it not a great idea when conditions aren't ideal (too little snow, too much ice). I will be fine. Worst injury seems to be a sprained wrist. i also have a bruised shoulder, sore back, and a tore up ear where the branches went through the ear guard on my helmet. Ears heal really fast it turns out as it is starting to look better already. Office work will be a challenge today (wrist doesn't like this typing right now). All in all I am doing well considering a head first collision with a group of trees. My helmet and ski poles... not so much, time to go shopping.

However it this is my best month of training ever. 14 h and 6 min total activity

What a great month, lots of awesome brags! Congrats on everything :-) As for your race next week, I bet you will be stronger than you think, and either way, it is the first race! It will give you an idea of what you need to focus on for your next race at least. Good luck!

I unfortunately did not get back on the wagon last week, and definitely did not reach 200 minutes. Are we doing that again this week, or a different challenge? Hopefully I can get back on track and avoid another CLP.

I have a volleyball match tonight, then hope to do body pump and some swimming tomorrow, cycling class Wednesday morning, swim again Thursday morning, and either run or cycle class Friday morning. I can't run on treadmills (bad shins), and it has been awfully cold here the last week or so, so I may wait a little longer to get back into running. I'm a huge wimp when it comes to cold
I also don't really have anything going on this weekend, so hoping to get a few classes in (maybe some yoga and step), and get another swim in. The masters coach at my gym keeps asking me when I'm coming back. I know it would help me get into shape to go to their practices, but I'm pretty sure I would die just trying to keep up at this point, haha.

I also need to start planning my races for the year! I'm waiting to find out when all the wedding events will be, but am afraid I'm going to miss out on good races if I don't sign up soon. My goal right now is to sign up for one race by Valentine's Day so I have something to aim for.

I hope everyone has an amazing week!

So very much to catch up on again - been a busy few days!

First the workout summary for the 200 min challenge - had a LOT going on this weekend so had to work around it, including two separate Y trips yesterday. We were there in the am, then had an hour drive to go to a birthday party, then after the party drove back to the Y instead of going home...
Friday night 25 min swim (stretched my 600 to a 700)
Sat am 60 min strength/endurance with the Personal Trainer
Sun am 35 min/3.5 mi neg split treadmill workout
Sun aft (Y trip 2) track work 10 mins (aka until my daughter got bored and wanted to go to the play area)
Sun later aft - shoveled the deck which did work up sweat, elevate heart rate, and make me short of breath (30 min count as 15 min workout)
Sun pregame - PT exercises 20 mins

Total 223/200

Kevin, glad to hear splitting the long run helped out. Hope the sinus thing is finally gone. BTW I took your advice and added an extra 100 to the workout. HOPEFULLY my swim class doesn't get cancelled again tonight, but we're getting up to another foot of snow and schools are closed again so who knows...

Snewo - I want that local watering hole!

SoberMike - welcome!

Juan - congrats on the race! Nicely done!!

Dave - I agree with Kevin, and also shed a tear at your story. BTW I also also second the notion that you need AWD. We've had a few Subarus now and they kick . The wife's Impreza wagon (the little wagon that could) is 176k strong. And my turbo Legacy kicks , in comfort Other than that I vote Mazda3.

Holy s Alex - I think you need your own challenges around here! Maybe you can jsut keep doubling whatever the challenge is for the rest of us

Jeff - sounds like a doozie of a crash!! Glad you're ok otherwise.

Last - by brag is an actual 2 minute plank! After the intial two 1 minutes, then the 1:30, I mentioned it to the Personal Trainer and she pushed us for a 2 min. Lots of shaking and hard breathing but I did it!
