KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS!!! cadmus - 2009-09-30 2:25 PM kt65 - 2009-09-30 12:16 PM Havin'Fun - 2009-09-30 7:28 AM Chris, I am in my second year of tris's and doing IMFL this Nov (yikes). I would not focus on how long you have been doing this sport. Realistically, you have done a 1/2 (and were awesome BTW), so the next step (in my opinion) is to look at the IM training plans and figure out if you have the time to train for it. Keep in mind it isn't just the 6 hr ride or the 3 hr run, but also factor in the time it takes to get out there and then "clean up" after.....I have found that piece is really time consuming. Another factor is the fatigue. Some days you will be so tired you don't think you can function! Also, look at the races and see what best fits your timetable. IMKY may be close, but does training and racing in the heat sound good to you? Some like it, some can't do it. (I know it wasn't hot this year, but typically Aug is hot in KY). Also look at the race itself....the swim (some like the river swim in KY, some don't - some like the ocean in FL, some don't, etc.) the bike, the run...hills, flat, whatever. Look at everything for each race. But I think the biggest piece to consider is the family time -that is a huge sacrifice (it may be due to training or due to fatigue)...I am fortuate that I don't work so I can train alot during the day....but I have missed some "family time" and that is tough for me...and for my family. Good luck. Oh, and just know once you hit that submit button when signing up you will freak out with a "What the heck did I just do ?" That's natural....all part of the fun! Chris, I know you CAN do it and do it well, but the training has to be there. It would be my main problem, because finding the time to train these long a$$ rides and runs with a full time job is my main reason for holding off right now. When I can switch to 3.5 to 4 days of work, yes, I am going to commit, but until then, I can't fathom missing that much family time. 7 hours away from home on a weekend day, when there are just 2 of them is just way to much to ask. In the meantime, I hope to become better at the HIM distance! And try to improve my bike and swim so I can come off the bike like you and Barry! Good luck with your decision! I'm targeting IMCA 2028 - our youngest should be out of the house about then and I might have the time to train. and I'll have 18 years to build up some base. LOL - that's great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I wore socks to bed for the first time of the fall last night. I hate my toesies getting cold. :-) Pretty sad numbers - definitely winding down from the tri season. Run numbers even a little low for my marathon training since Tony actually traveled twice this month! And more days off this month than most of the rest of the year. Oh well. Swim numbers low b/c I hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will be joining US Masters Swimming and competing freestyle in at least 1 meet - December 15 (if I'm not mistaken).... Uh oh - the cat's out of the bag! |

I have a friend from a local fire department - IAFF Local 421 - City of Lansing Fire Dept - she is running the Marine Corps Marathon and is raising funds for the IAFF Burn Foundation. Someday I hope to be selected to run this for the IAFF. If you feel so compelled, visit her page and read up on the what's and why's. She is now a Captain on LFD and we've run a few races together over this past year. She's a great person and the cause is huge. If you guys want to post the info to others who you think would be interested in seeing it, that would be cool. MMurphy - MCM Fundraising |

Over the next few months, I am planning on icreasing the run number significantly. Will try to maintain a little fitness on the bike, and let the swim suffer a bit. Jeremy...cool about the masters swim. I will have to give credit to my masters group, as I feel as if I have come a LONG way in a year due to the group. I think you will enjoy the motivation. Since we are discussing shorts, my Desoto Forza'a were awesome this weekend. Almost like running naked...never knew I had them on, and they were way more comfortable than my cycliing bibs. |

I like to use masters to mix up my swimming when it starts to get monotonous (SP?) Having other people in your lane gives you something to pay attention to (gotta beat all the guys in your lane...) |
