Veteran 297 Kansas | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread ballyard7 - 2010-05-04 11:58 AM From what i've read today the spill is still a long way away from panama city beach. Now i'm not saying that it can't get there eventually, but hopefully they can cap the well and start the clean up before it gets there. I agree, we are all getting worried way premature about this. I realize that triathlon attracts "planners" by nature and that any unforeseen contingency gets all of us worked up a bit. However, there is six months before IMFL, a lot can change and the situation is pretty dynamic. So, I say we all just give this at least a month before we start getting concerned about a DU or alternative race sites or events. |

So far the last two triathlons that I've signed up for that had an ocean swim in the gulf have had mishaps with the swim. First the Hi-Fi tri was canceled in Galveston because of the hurricane in 2008. This year I did the Lonestar oly, which had the swim canceled due to high winds and now this oil slick problem with Florida possibly. Hopefully some of the solutions that BP is currently working on will pull through and this won't even be in our minds come October/November. |

The water was really warm. It was like swimming in a bath! |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Why waste time worrying about something we have no control over 6 months out? Last year 2 of my 6 tris swims were canceled. Now is the time to train and build our fitness. What fun training are you guys doing today? I did hour swim this morning and have 3 hour tempo ride soon after lunch. Equipment upgrades or changes? I am waiting on new bike shoes to come from UK ordered some Sidis from Probikekit.com at great price. Hope to decide on new bike in next couple days and I sold my Power Tap Zipp 404s tubulars no more worries about flats at races. I'm fast on changing tubes on clinchers. |

New user 11 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Nice attitude about IMFL (but I think that I am still going to worry) 80 min ride this morning. Forgot to look at the temperature (45F at the start) so went without full gloves or anything under the helmet. Not fun. Swimming this afternoon then, to finish off the endurance for today, mow the yard. More importantly, margheritas tonight! Who cares if it is not a "real" Mexican holiday if it is an excuse to eat tacos and drink margheritas. |

Expert 1139 Austin | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'll be getting in the pool after class today for a couple thousand yards and then maybe a 4-5 mile run. Equipment wise I'm pinching my pennies because I really want a set of 808 clinchers. |

Equipment wise I'm pinching my pennies because I really want a set of 808 clinchers. Enjoy your swim and maybe run! I'm considering those wheels as well. Trying to decide with new bike if I'll change to a quarq power meter and race wheels and if so which ones. Considered Sram S60s but if going mid line and really want Zipps maybe wait a bit and get wait I really want or go for it. My new bike is 25th wedding anniversary present...so go big right? Narrowed it done to Orbea Ordu or Specialized Transition. |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I am real happy with the Hed 6/9 clincher setup w/powertap ant+ that I got from echappe. Not sure its better than the zipps but it has served me very well and was less expensive. I also just splurged on a saris joule to have the data all in front of me, and di2's for my ultimate splurge. almost got a specialized SHIV but decided on upgrading the Litespeed 05 blade I already have. now it feels like a new ride. I think the most important things you have to ask yourself about a bike (and saddle) in long course is "does it fit?". As to the other things like wheels, groupo, etc you have to ask yourself "is it worth it in terms of speed, comfort, and/or bling factor?" |

Expert 1139 Austin | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread phatknot I think the only reason I'd go with the Zipps over the HED's is for the bling factor, then again I'm also thinking of flashpoint fp80's so who knows at this point. Put me in the category of not using a HRM, I've used it once or twice on a ride but haven't used it for the past couple of weeks, and I have never used one running. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread So my 3 hour ride took 3 hours but spent a lot of that time on the side of the road. Rode over some glass...jerks where I live drink and throw their bottles out the windows so glass on the roads is almost always always from alcohol...got a flat. I have two spare tubes and CO2 but can't get first tube to hold any air...I blow into it to get some air in it before I put it in my tire. So I use second one, get it all in nice and use my CO2 but it doesn't hold air. Thankfully I rode from home today so I call my son and have him come..don't know the name of the street I'm on only cross street as MA doesn't put both streets on most street signs only the intersection street so we talk while he looks on google map to figure out how to get to me. He brings pump, another tube, CO2 and more water. 150 or more cars/trucks drive me and only 3 ask if I'm okay...most chat on their cell or drink their Dunkin Donuts coffee. We finally arrives and I still can't get it to hold air he listens and points out I have a gash in my tire. Put the bike in the car and drive home. I do have new Pro 3 tires I got last week and was going to install after my sprint Sunday. It was beautiful outside and my power was good. I want to ride more but it's time to be mom not IM in training. Another positive note Orbea in 51 came in and is built up so tomorrow if it doesn't rain riding both the Ordu and Transition and will decide which I want. |

I don't use my HRM anymore strictly power on bike and pace on the run. To many things can effect HR plus for some reason my HR doesn't pick up well with Garmin. |

Expert 1360 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'm also very jealous of the bling. I can't afford anything so I'll just be riding my 2004 tri bike, 2 sizes too big with no race wheels. If I had the money I would be buying the Scott Plasma Contessa, very pretty bike, but alas, I'm pretty poor right now. (And trying to convince DH I should take $5000 ($4300 CN plus tax) out of saving to buy a new bike is definitely not happening). For me, my new bling will be new running shoes that I will purchase probably on friday. I need to wait until my April credit card bill is issued so that I don't have to pay for them until the end of June. Sometimes reading about other people buying new bikes makes me jealous and sad. Anywho, enough of my sob story. 3000 m swim this morning 1x500 m and 2x1000m. each was progressively slower than the one before. I don't think I do well with swimming the day after I do weights. I use a HR monitor for all bike workouts and all run workouts. I find when I'm working on the computrainer (coach's not mine) that my power zones correspond pretty well to my HR, but it takes a while for me to warm up, otherwise I'll push 200 watts on hills and my HR won't go up really. I've done HR training for 8 years now so I feel kind of lost without it. |

Expert 885 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread New bling would be nice, but probably not in the picture for me right now, either. At some point I'd like to check out power meters and race wheels, but I'm not there yet. I've started following my 30 week IM training plan and the first few weeks are light compared to where I was at before my HIM. Seems weird to back down, but I'm thinking it's a good break for me right now. Hip has been bothering me a little lately and I can't figure out if it's a muscle thing or something more. The lighter workouts will be good for that. Plus, May is always crazy busy with kid's stuff and end of school, so it will all work out. |

Expert 1139 Austin | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Congrats on the new bike we're definitely going to need to see some pictures! My "bling" is very contingent on funding which I may or may not have, so I may end up on a rented pair of wheels in Florida, that's definitely still to be seen. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread When I inquired about an Ordu the shop ordered one in my size to be a floor model that I could test out. They had a 54 come in for someone else that they were going to show me but that got sold right away. After I test rode it today we talked parts and made some changes to the components and wheels. He spoke with Orbea a couple days ago and they had 4 51's Ordus in stock for the rest of 2010 model year. After I rode the bike, talked to my husband and called the shop back to say exactly what I wanted, he called his Orbea rep to order my bike and they are out of Red 51s. Clever bike shop guy says okay send me a 54 with the parts I want on it and Zipp 404s so they'll put the bike aside for me that was to be the floor model that only I have ridden and have the 54 be the floor model. I'm grateful that the shop listened to my interest in the bike and ordered the size and color I wanted on a hunch otherwise I'd be waiting for '11's to come in or riding a black or blue Ordu. Plus they gave me a nice discount! Should be able to pick it up next Friday...quarq won't be in for 3-4 weeks but they'll put a temporary compact crank on it for me until it arrives.
