jlahoward - 2011-06-06 12:36 PM Tite - Was this Kerr Lake?  Nice race.  It was a hot one - especially Sunday, so you didn't miss much on the Oly.  We're racing in Asheville this weekend and are hoping for cooler weather!

Yep. Sprint was Gary Kirby. I skipped Kerr lake. Bet it was a scorcher. Didnt realize you were racing it. How did ya do?

Had an oly on Saturday with average results.  It was HOT.  Race report here.

Swim was slower than expected.  880 yds @ 17:49.  Meh.

Bike was good.  24.5 miles @ 1:06 (22.3 mph).

Run was HOT.  10k @ 47:14 (7:37/mile).  Did I mention it was HOT?

Good race, I'm not 100% satisfied but I finished 9th of 39 in AG @ 2:12:36 and 34th of 261 males.  Overall winner was @ 1:57:xx.

Strong performance. Why the screwy swim distance?

Alright, I need some advice.....

I was not anticipating getting a new bike this year, but possibly next year look for a tri bike.  I'm currently on a Trek 2.1 road bike with aero bars, which is working okay.

But, I was at the bike shop on Friday and noticed they have the following 2010 models:

A Cervelo P1 for $1190 (retail is $1700)

A Cervelo P2 for $1700 (retail is $2800)

Thoughts???  Is it worth it, or wait until next year for the possible 2011 models.

I love my P2.  Bang for the buck it's hard to beat, if it fits.

I'm not a cervelo guy, but the P2 is a battle tested work horse.

Is the $1700 price tag worth giving it a look this year, as opposed to putting it off?

So, I've been MIA for a while enjoying some family time, and being lazy.  But, today, I committed to Augusta 70.3!

I'm excited for my 2nd HIM - hope to improve upon Orlando and have fun.

Who else is doing Augusta?

I'm doing Augusta as my first HIM, so sounds like we will be trading training stories...

Yeah, it is a little screwy.  That's they way they've run this race for about 16 years now and I'm not sure why (this was my 1st time racing it).  Later this summer there's a new true oly distance race, really the only in Mississippi.  The other 2 (this one and another) both have a short swim.

Have you been fitted for a cervelo already or did you just come across some good deals?  I'm looking to get a bike at the end of the season and and am considering getting fitted now so I can jump quickly on a close-out sale.

When you say "fitted", what all do you mean (as there are many different definitions to this).

I have not been fitted yet.  I was thinking about trying one on for size and see what happens.  I just ran across the deals.

That's how I bought my road bike but based some things I've read here and on ST I'm wondering if it might be a better to get fitted before getting a tri bike.

ETA: I just saw your other posted. By "fitted" I mean measured and then using those measurements to help you select which bike model/brand works best for you. From what I've read there are a couple ways to do it, ST recommends "Stack & Reach" and there is a system that competitivecyclist.com uses.

I'm in the same boat.  I'm casually looking at tri bikes but right now I'm on a Trek Pilot 1.0 with clip on aero bars.  I've removed all the spacers and recently rotated the seat post to get the saddle a little closer and brought the aero bars in tighter.  Not sure if I can quantify those changes but I'm actually a little more comfortable and slightly more agressive, so win-win I guess.  On Saturday I was easily in the minority, it seemed like everyone had a sweet tri bike.  I think on my transition row (all guys in my AG) there were 2 of us with road bikes!

My quick question of the day.

When entering bike times in the logs do you enter the time the computer says or the total time you were out?

E.g. This morning I finally got to test my new computer and it says the ride was 39:17 (as it stops when you stop at lights) but my watch was at 40:30.

I know it's not a huge difference but it can add up on longer rides.

I know it's not a huge difference but it can add up on longer rides.

I used to have my computer setup to stop recording when I stopped but I turned it off.  When it was setup that way I logged the "ride time" not the "elapsed time".  I think it really depends on what you're looking to track in your logs.  If you want to see what your average pace is I think the ride time is more reflective.  If you find that you're stopping a lot I'd suggest finding a different route.  As an extreme example,  if your 60 minute ride time is really 75 minutes of elapsed time I don't think you're getting the same benefit of 60 minute ride by stopping that much.  If it's only a few minutes off then I wouldn't worry about it.

I turned mine off a while ago (and actually spent what felt like an eternity at a stop light this morning) because earlier this spring I was riding a lot on the trainer and the GPS keep trying to come on then the signal would fade an it would think I had stopped.  It was really annoying because beside coming on and off when I looked at my power files my intervals were all screwed up from all the "stopping".

Basically if you're training based off of HR or power then I don't think you need to worry about the difference between the two times because what you're really after is the distribution of time spent in each HR or power zone and that's independent of long your computer reports the ride as being.  If you're using RPE to train and speed to tell if you're improving then I'd set it up to track ride time.

That's just me.

If you're looking at Cervelos go to Homewood Cycle or Birmingham Bicycle Company. Tell them you're interested in Cervelos and ask if they'll take basic measurements to see if you can fit it. They'll probably do so pretty easily.

Then, when you're done, go to Bobs and see if you fit giants or specialized any better. Then go back to Cahaba and see if you fit the Treks any better. It's going to be a fit more than a name brand.

But, I'd be willing to bet they'll be able to fit you pretty easily...

I'm going to start the process and see where it goes.  I'll try the different fits and see what I get.  They didn't have a 2010 on sale P2 in my projected size (54) at Cahaba Cycles, but he did mention that the P2 retail prices have come down from last years (2010) models.  So, If I don't take the plunge this year or post season, maybe I can get a 2011 P2 on closeout.  I'd rather save up for a P2 or P3 price range bike.

I'm considering signing up for another race and could use some opinions. My next A race is an Oly on 1 Oct.  I'm also signed up for a Sprint on 11 Sept which I figure will be a good tune up.  I'm pretty unhappy with my performance last month so I'd like to get another race in before these too but my schedule won't let me get a tri in June or July.  I found another race nearby in August.  It has both a sprint an Oly option.  I've talked to some people who have done it previously and they say it's good race but can be hot (it's August, what do you expect...).  My goal is to get some race experience in before my A race and still give me enough time to make adjustments if necessary (I'm afraid just doing the one tune up race in Sept won't allow me enough time) so I'm thinking I should do the sprint.  The race schedule would look like this

14 Aug - Sprint (750m, 15.5 mile, 5k)

11 Sept - Sprint (750m, 20k, 5k)

1 Oct - Olympic

I don't think this is too much and actually seems like a really nice build up to an A race.  What do you guys think?

That looks like a great schedule to me.

Definition of jealousy:

Belongs to one of the senior directors of one of our sister companies. Admittedly it's set up for time trials and has a 54/42 crank with an 11/19 cassette!

Is there a saddle on this bike? If so, it's to high

I'm debating about doing an OLY on Aug 14th (the have both at the same race I'm looking at). The reason I want to do one is a kind of redemption from from my poor performance in May.  However I'm feel that doing the sprint will allow me to train through the race (so I don't disrupt things for my A race in Oct) but still put in a solid performance.
