Picking up on what TankBoy shared, I heard from a training partner of a former colleague that the wave start at IMLP '13 will allow people in the last two waves to wear short fins to compensate for starting 12 and 15 minutes behind.  Everyone will have the same midnight deadline for finishing...So, if you have not run all three loops of the course by 10 or 10.30 p.m., it may get too close for comfort for you...

Are you allowed to keep the fins on for the run to T1 in Saranac Lake to Lake Placid?

Who needs fins, I'm switching to an all-bean diet! Not only will it propel me faster, I don't have to worry about anyone drafting of of me!

If I can get a faster swim time drafting off your bean blasts, I'm all for it.

I have no shame.

Or sense of smell.

cheekymonkeys1 FTW because, really, do any of us have any shame?  Next time you put on tri shorts, take a look in the mirror.  Shameless, the whole lot of us.

Thanks for the laugh.  Now if you will excuse me, I have put all the kids to bed and only two of them are yelling...it is time to go set up the trainer to put in a hour on the bike.

Tomorrow is the first tri club party of the year, the one where we all get to try on the sample  trisuits, tops, and bottoms from the fit kit before placing an order. Every other year it's been done in someone's home, this year we have a brew pub sponsoring us so it will be in a bar. Very few of us are at race weight, so when you throw in the free beer we may wind up causing blindness and mass hysteria.

I am loving the humor!  This week has been sort of brutal for me thus far; hard work, not bad.

Big improvement was a jump in my FTP from 187 to 211 in three weeks.  Gotta start somewhere, but it still feels good to see some improvement.  Love the power tap + trainerroad.

BTW, if you want some good strategy info, take a look at www.endurancecorner.com.  There is a series called something like "how to qualify for kona"; lots of insight/tips buried in there.  Not my current goal, but still good.

Have a great weekend!

Wow, that's great improvement. Good job! I saw the same thing last year when I started training with power and following the TR programs, went from 176 to 208 in 5 weeks. Hoping to see similar increases this year once I get through the swim/run focus.

FTP of 240=w/kg of 4.0, my dream number for a hilly race. I love how my coach says "Sure, you can do that." What he's not saying is he'll having me p*ssing blood and crying for my mammy along the way. And I pay for this abuse

As far as the humor goes, come on, this whole sport is silly. Where else do you get to pay a ton of money to pee in your wetsuit and on the bike and talk casually about it among other equally insane men and women dressed in brightly-colored spandex?

I am not kidding, I just looked at the samples Rocket Science sent in their fit kit and they are colors normally not found in nature. Barney purple with lime green trim and stitching. Tonight is going to be hilarious.

Hi all!

I am just making my way into this group and am catching up on the thread - what the heck took me so long!!

IMLP is my second time at IMLP, second IM. I did it in 2011.  Awesome race.  My major goals are to 1) keep my shorts on (long story, but my tri shorts ripped around mile 70 of the bike and I had to duct tape them together to finish. I call it my wardrobe malfunction), 2) to have fun and 3)finish faster than last time (15:02) which should work out if I can keep my shorts on.

I am heading to Placid for Fireman Ironman camp in June.  Not sure if any of you are going to be there or not, but if you are I would love to meet up.

Training is going well, except my bike is in the shop until Monday, which totally puts the kabosh on my 3 hr ride I am supposed to do tomorrow.  Better now than later though.

Mandy

Now THAT is a "pictures or it never happened" story if there ever was one!

Welcome aboard, Mandy - and you are not too late, you are probably actually just in the nick of time. This is about when the group starts getting fired up: less than 150 days to go and everyone in full-on get-me-off-this-trainer-cabin-fever mode...

I've been a forever lurker.  So I finially decided to join in the fun.  This will be my 4th Ironman but my first time for Placid.

Wow!  Mandy I remember you because a few years ago we were in the same mentor group.  It was Lora, but I don't remember the name of the group. I wonder what happened to Lora.  Anyway,  I love reading your blog.  I haven't kept up with it recently otherwise I'd probably know your story about your ripped shorts.  Sounds crazy!

Question:  How hard do you push long trainer rides?  I have done a couple 2-3 hr rides at an IF in the 0.8 range for power users.  The guidelines I have heard for age groups is probably in the 0.65-0.75 range (IF is basically average ride power / threshold power) for an iron distance race, so you can run effectively afterwards.  I take the approach that I want to train a bit harder than race rate, at least on the trainer, but that said, it definitely requires some recovery.  How do you approach these rides?  Thanks!

I've gone up to .96, I believe.  But now is the time to train at the top of your threshold and a little above.  During your training you want to increase what your threshold is so as you continue to train you can push harder and harder while lasting longer.

My Sunday rides are have been about 3 hrs at 80-85% FTP.  My first 45 mins are usually pretty easy though.  Basically, get on and keep the hammer down.  I find it hard to maintain...but do much better if I insert short breaks (1-2 mins) or allow myself to hope off for bathroom breaks (I don't pee on my bike until at LEAST June Surprised)...I can maintain that intensity longer.  Saturday rides are similar, but have more specific main sets (several at 100%FTP) but more recovery in between.

All that said, I ran out of gas on my two long rides early this weekend.  But such is life...
