I couldn't help but notice that's a lot of time in the saddle in one week! What kind of training plan is that, and where does it peak if it's at 8 hours/week in January???

Jamie-

It actually goes up again next week and then back down and then it becomes more "normal" in my opinion with roughly hour long rides a few times per week and then a long ride once per week.

It is the "mid volume, base build" i think is what it is called on trainer road.

It seemed like a good idea at the time!

It also helped for me to lower just the front of my saddle 1-2 centimeters.

Good luck and kick butt, Kevin!

Randy, hope that calf is 100% soon.

Looking forward to a swim and bike tomorrow (Saturday) with my Xterra training buddies if the waters are calm. There was a high surf advisory today. If the water looks dangerous it'll end up a bike and run.

Sunday we have a 4 mile Trail race which we'll extend to make 8 for training. I LOVE running through our hills. The beauty of it all takes my mind off the pain in my legs.

Happy training! Hope you have a fab weekend.

They are more money but always seem to be very highly recommended when people ask what trainer to buy. I splurged many years ago and bought a computrainer. It seemed like a lot of money to me but if you look at the hundreds of hours that I have used it, it has proven to be quite cheap on a per use basis.

Randy rides rollers. There is a steap learning curve but they are a cheap way to get in an indoor workout. I have a set and have been contemplating getting them back out for another try........ I'll post photos of my injuries.

Bryan, I have one I'll sell you if you're interested. Just message me.

Definitely get some jammers for the pool and a true tri suit for racing. Some folks like a 1-piece suit while others prefer a 2 piece...thats a whole new conversation. What is your height, weight, sizes? I've got some stuff I have bought over the years that has only been used once or twice...didn't fit or just wasn't what I was looking for. Maybe I can help you out.

Well, 4000 swim turned out to be 3800. Figured it was time to quit when my arms separated from my body and sunk to the bottom Really faded over the last set. For those of you into that perverted sort of swim torture here was today's workout:

1000 warm up mix
12 X 100 on 1:40 (all 1:27-28)
300 easy pull
10 X 100 Hard on 2:00 (1:23-27....should have been better but I faded big time!)
300 easy pull
200 cool down-not happening

This evening is a 1.5 hour hard interval bike workout. Not sure why I ended up with the long/hard swim on the same day as this bike workout. So, in conclusion I am only half way through the suck of today's workouts

I only started doing triathlons so I would have an excuse to go shopping

Almost to the weekend gang! Anyone have big plans? Randee...you are going on vacation?

Swim at lunch  is the only workout on the schedule. May try to do some strength work this evening if I'm motivated. Bike Sat and Sunday and another swim on Sunday. I always like to do my swim as the first workout of the day as I feel that running or biking before makes for a tough swim from the previous exertion. Bad thing is that the pool doesn't open until Noon on Sunday and I like to leave the afternoons open for family stuff or napping

This week has gone by fast....other than the time I spend in the pool. Hard to believe only a week left in January.

SCORE!! School delayed for 2 hours due to "dangerous" ice in the Houston area... lol...

3000 yard swim and 5.5. mile easy run completed for the day. I'm going to declare myself the winner of the Winter Ice Storm Aquathon race. 10 minute transition to check school mail and change clothes between workouts.

Kinda cramped up on my swim yesterday so I'm going to skip the swim at lunch, but today starts the Tour of Sufferlandria for me tonight. They start it with an FTP test, so I want to be fresh for that. I forsee very minimal biking and swimming the next 9 days, maybe just a run if the weather clears up a bit just to keep things loose. MAYBE I'll float around one day in the pool, but I'm thinking it's not going to be too much.

Just got back from a nice swim... 1600yds... and as I was doing some drills working on body position I had an epiphany... a similar thing happened to me my Sr. Season of baseball. I had always struggled trying get my swing fast enough... until a new coach told me that I had the fastest swing he had ever seen... I realized I was always AHEAD of the pitch and not BEHIND like I thought... I had a great season hitting that year...

now... back to swimming... I had always been struggling to get my legs higher in the water while swimming, but when I was working on breathing technique today I realized the legs weren't the problem... my HEAD was WAY TOO LOW in the water... Once I figured that out and got my head high enough, my legs seemed to follow and I was going A LOT faster. Now... I still have a lot to work on, but that helped a whole lot!

Just thought I'd share that... especially with the other rookies like me still learning to swim correctly.

plans this weekend??? helping the in-laws pick up and new dinning room table... and then going to the father-in-law's storage unit to get out his "old" bike and get it fitted to me... pretty excited about that

Did another 6 on the gym trainer; and hating it more and more by the day! The pace was just a tad slower than last time, but I'll be pushing hard Monday and Wednesday in preparation for an 8 mile ride next Friday.

I dunno about the rest of you, but sub-freezing temperatures are beginning to get really annoying...

Solid day today...6 AM spin class and a lunch 1500M swim.  I've been working on some of the stuff discussed in Swim Speed Secrets and I'm starting to get some feel for the water.  Slow but sure...

No kidding...I ran outdoors yesterday afternoon.  About 18* and breezy.  The problem was more the footing than anything, and my poor feet got pretty cold.  I have a 6 miler scheduled for tomorrow morning when it's supposed to be about 10*...no way.  Treadmill it is.  Again.

Monday's looking great, but I won't be back in town until around noon that day. With class from 2-5 and sunset at six, I'm not sure I'll be able to get a 6 miler in before I have to call it a night.

Day 1 of TrainerRoad's Tour of Sufferlandia is over! Day 1 is Rubber Glove, a 60-minute with a 20 minute all out session. It went pretty well, and when the session was over, TrainerRoad updated my FTP (Functional Threshold Power, which is theoretically the max power I could hold for an hour) from 219 last September to 253 today, which is good and bad, I guess. It's good to see some progress, but it's definitely going to make the next 8 days of Sufferlandia workouts tougher! Here's a link to my workout, if you want to see what TrainerRoad looks like: http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/657843-sufferfest-rubber-g...

I hope everyone is having a great Friday night!

Thanks! Although I have a feeling that it's going to be both a blessing and a curse for this week's workouts!

X2 -- those are some really nice wattage gains, Jamie! Congrats!

Good luck in your marathon this weekend, Kevin!

Jeez, sometimes swimming just blows... there must be some mental games I can play to get my endurance in gear. I just can't get my head around doing "fast" 300-400 yard sets. I'm usually breathing heavy after a "fast" 100 or 200...

Jamie-nice work! Always great to see improvement.

Kevin-good luck this weekend!

Steve-I find that when I have a long "fast" set of intervals in the pool or a swim TT I do much better building into the distance than going out hard and trying to hang on. This allows my HR to work up to where it will likely peak rather than shoot up there and stay up there. That high HR and shortness of breath you get when swimming hard are harder for me to hold/tolerate when swimming hard as compared to simialr efforts when running or biking. Bottom line, at least for me, is that swimming is a different animal in terms of pacing and holding long hard efforts.

Randee...Enjoy Colorado!!! I wish I could join you.

Had my first 'real' run today since Christmas. A whopping 2.1 miles, but trying not to undo the work that the E.P. is doing. You should see my left thigh...The entire outer thigh from knee to hip (along my IT band) is a beautiful mass of different colors. This week's session was pretty painful. I now know that when he says, "This might hurt," he's not kidding. Amazingly, as ugly as it is and as painful as the fascia scraping and 'leveling/straightening' is, it feels so much better and today's run felt quite nice.

Had a really nice swim this morning. Felt very comfortable in the water, like I was gliding through it instead of fighting it.

Near the end of the swim, the woman that I was sharing the lane with asked me, "did you swim in college." Clearly she hasn't seen what a good swimmer looks like. I told her no but that was the nicest thing that anyone has ever said to me in the pool.

Jason, that had to be one of the best experiences ever. Nothing like feeling you know what you're doing!

Day 2 of ToS is over. It was the hardest bike workout I've ever done: http://runoften.wordpress.com/2014/01/25/tour-of-sufferlandria-day-...

Jason-that's great! That's how I see myself when I'm swimming well. Others probably think "that poor old guy forgot to take his medication today."

Jamie-great blog post. Very funny.

Good solid bike workout this morning. Never felt great building into the workout and the hardest interval was 15 min @260-270 watts. Before I started that interval I was already rationalizing why I would not be able to make the numbers. Strangely, I felt pretty strong and ended up with avg power @ 266 for the interval. Finished off with another good interval and was happy with the workout. Looking ahead at next week's schedule I have a 10 min. TT on Tuesday........I @#$% hate testing. Tomorrow is another 60--70 min on the bike and 3400 swim......already rationalizing how little of the swim I can actually do without feeling like a slacker. Maybe I'll surprise myself.
