Ok, so I went to my OWS class today over lunch.  Had my wetsuit in my hand and a positive attitude to boot! While I am waiting for coach Mark to arrive, I realize there is no lifeguard on duty and a sign on the back of his chair.  Beaches closed due to high bacteria levels!!!!!!!!!!! Huh? already? you gotta be kidding me.  All the rain we have had (like 7 inches) caused ecoli issues. YUCK! No OWS today, but I want credit for going..

Fortunately, we are heading to our house in Northern WI this weekend where the lakes are pristine.  Like you can see all the way to the bottom at three feet.  He gave me some pointers and I plan to use them Friday-Sunday.  For now, I am sticking with him and not taking on another coach....some may call me stupid, but this loyalty thing is really important to me.

Thanks for the update, Beth. I was wondering where he'd wandered off to.

Wow! Isn't it unusual to have the long run first? These people are MEAN.

Don't worry, Bethie!! You know you can do 10k just fine, your bike is great, and the 5k will be a breeze after all the great running you've put in recently. You'll be awesome!

YOU CAN DO IT!

If it were me, I would revise my race strategy from what I said earlier.  I would go out at a easier effort for the 10K especially if it is hot to give you a chance to hydrate and get ready for the bike.  I would still give it all I had in the bike and the last run.

Good luck!

I've been wondering the same thing! Maybe everyone's out training? We're pretty much in the middle of tri season, right?

Speaking of which, I'm kind of sad that Saturday's race will be my last tri for a pretty long time. There are plenty of races around in July and August, but none of them work with my schedule and the next one I can do is in September. I'm not worried about losing motivation, since I'm planning to do some road races and use swimming and biking for cross training, but I'm going to miss the actual triathlons!

Hi Erin!

My first, and most likely last and only race of this season is the HyVee Dry-Tri - LOL

My schedule is just to crazy to try and plan for anything else, I may try and pick up a 5k or maybe even a 10k(did I just say that????? - who is posting?????) some weekend, seems you can usually register for those pretty late

now just to figure out what to do for a training plan!

A 10k!! Look at you!!! I think this is the year we turn you into a runner. And then maybe we'll turn me into a swimmer. (Oh my God, HA! I crack myself up.)

It doesn't seem like it should be so hard to fit a couple races into my schedule, but man, it so is. And your schedule is about 200,000 times more ridiculous! I still can't get over how much it sucks that they're canceling the swim on your only race.

I know - it does suck - but it's really for the safety of the athletes

I can't really complain - it's a real mess there and they've done everything they can - in the grand scheme of things...............well, you know

Yeah, I hear you. I felt the same way last year when they canceled the swim of my first tri after the oil spill. You feel like an a$$ for complaining, because, well, bigger picture and all. But that doesn't really make it suck any less.

I still say you're going to be awesome and realize how much fun running is. What? IT COULD TOTALLY HAPPEN!!

Hi all....I've been up at my mom's (am still here) near Mt. Rainier enjoying two days of actual sunshine.  It was not sunny in Seattle, but here it was in the 70s, so I laid on a blanket in the sun for the better part of Thurs and Fri. I head home today to do a bike ride, and an open water swim in the morning.  Today is 45 and gray again but they say the sun will come out eventually.......stay tuned.

Good luck to the racers--be sure to post your RR links here ASAP!!!

I'm home from my little local 5k here in Anaheim. Here are my unofficial results taken from my Garmin.

Time: 52:57
Lap 1: 16m 07s, 1.00 miles, 16m 07s /mile
Lap 2: 17m 12s, 1.00 miles, 17m 12s /mile
Lap 3: 17m 59s, 1.00 miles, 17m 59s /mile
Lap 4: 01m 09s, 0.07 miles, 15m 54s /mile

I almost beat my PR which is amazing since I set it a couple of years ago right before I started having my back problems. I was nearly 50 pounds lighter then than I am now, too, since I put on so much weight during my surgery/recovery. So, I'm feeling pretty good about that!

I think if the conditions had been different, I would have made it today. They didn't completely close the streets to traffic. They only closed off 1 lane. Since we were on some of the major thoroughfares near Disneyland, there was a lot of traffic whizzing by us on the left, so we were all sucking in exhaust fumes. I'm a borderline asthmatic, so I found myself starting to wheeze several times, so I would back off to let my lungs recover.

Since I only missed my PR by about 40 seconds, I think I would have gotten a new one today if I hadn't been backing off. On the upside, even with the backing off, I managed to shave ~2 minutes off my time from my April 13 race.

I always get a little nostalgic when I think about my first tri - the anniverary of that event is coming up soon and although it's unlikely I will have one final comparison, it will always be a favorite memory.

Since we have some folks that are going to be completing their first tris in the next few months I thought it would be fun to post (or in some cases re-post) the RR from our first tri's - it's always inspiring

When I did my first tri I hadn't even heard of this site, but this is an email I sent to my friends and family - I realized later it was my first RR -

cornhusker state games
Dear Friends and Family
I wanted to share my weekend adventure with you.

This will probably be news, but I did my first triathlon this past weekend,
on Sunday July 23. The event consisted of a 1000 yd lake swim, a 12.5 mile
bike ride, and a 3.1 mile run (completed in that order). It was a part of
the Cornhusker State Games which were conducted between July 14 and July 23
in Lincoln Nebraska. The games consist of all sorts of competitions,
everything from fishing to darts, to volleyball, to you name it, they
probably have it.

The triathlon was an amazing event, I still can't quite believe I did it.
The event started at 7:30 am, with the swim. They organize everyone into 4
groups, called waves, there were 376 participants. The waves are set up by
age group and gender. The guys get bright orange swim caps and the women
get bright pink ones.

The race starts with the first wave swimming out into the open water toward
the first buoy. They have huge buoys that mark the swim course. There are
3 minutes between each wave. I wonder if it's called a wave because by the
4th group, there are literally waves hitting the shore - the lake starts
off very calm.

Oddly for me, the swim was the most overwhelming part. I had no idea what
it would feel like to be in the water with nearly 400 people, you are
literally on top of one another and people are doing their best to move
forward in their position, I can only imagine what it must have looked like
from the shore. I ended up doing the majority of the swim in breastroke,
with a little sidestroke thrown in. I still finished the swim in a
respectable time.

It was so cute, there were several young kids lined up as we were running
up the beach and to the transition area, they had their hands out and were
giving each of us a high five as we ran by. The whole crowd cheered each
person. It gave me goosebumps.

My first memory of the bike was rounding the first corner and seeing a hill
that at the time looked like a mountain to me - lol, I had no idea there
were hills like that in Lincoln, let alone 3 of them within one 4 mile
area. The bike portion was three laps around the park, so each hill was
tackled 3 times, as I started my final lap of the bike ride, I saw people
on the trail for the run portion and actually found myself wishing that I
was running. Wow - I never thought those thoughts would come to my mind.

I took the run portion very easy, I alternated running and walking every 2
minutes, this allowed me to pace myself and finish the race and still be
standing.

It was an awesome feeling coming across the finish line . As the
contestants got close to the finish line, there were a couple of veterans
(and had already finished the race) that had cowbells and were ringing them
and cheering each athlete into the finish line. As each person crossed the
finish line, the announcer for the event welcomed each contestant back by
name with congratulations for completing the race.

It was an incredibly encouraging and supportive environment. I was so
impressed with the organization of the event, the participants and their
willingness to help and encourage a newbie - at all points along the race,
other participants (mostly veterans, I would guess) expressed words of
encouragement and support to keep going and finish it. I can honestly say
I have never experienced anything quite like it.

I achieved my goal in finishing within 2 hours and completing the event. I
have to say I am hooked. I am planning on doing another competition in
Kansas City on September 10. Who knows what next summer will bring. I
know for sure I will try to participate in a triathlon in Minnesota in a
town near where my parents have a cabin.

The next summer brought a sprint, and two Oly's (one Oly as a team - thanks to PF)
You guys know the rest...........
I haven't yet participated in that tri in Minnesota, but I will one of these days!

Hey All!

I know what you are thinking . . . WHO ARE YOU???  I have been a bad little Manatee . . . not sure what to say other than I have a bit of an "all-or-nothing" personality - I'm really trying to work on that . . . I have been putting all my free time into training and if I couldn't get in here to keep up with everyone (ALL), then I just stayed away . . . (NOTHING).  I know that is where a lot of my weight problems come from . . . ok, off track now . . .

Tomorrow is my A Race - Ironman Kansas 70.3 . . . I started training for tri's just to do this race.  I hate coming in here after being gone so long, but I had to come let you all know tomorrow is the day.  I really wanted to come in and thank all of you Manatees for your continual support (with inspires, even while I have been away) and for getting me prepared (well, as prepared as I'm gonna be by tomorrow! - maybe you wanna see how I do before taking credit for that, LOL!)  I really knew NOTHING about tri's before joining this group and you have all taught me sooooo much!!  Thank You!!!  Hopefully I will apply it well

When things get tough tomorrow you better believe I'll be thinking of all of those that have helped me along the way, and that definitely means you all!!

I know one thing . . . I should be in bed :P
