Curious for our power people.

What do you race different distances at % wise?  Based on my 230 (indoor trainer tests) FTP, I have been using 185-190ish which would be 80% as my endurance rides.  Did my longest rides 35 and 40 miles last week right around 185.  How much does it change going down to shorter races.  My longest race bike last year was 20 miles, shortest sprint was 13.  Since I am sitting at work, I figured I would throw this out there as a question until I can get on my bike and do one of these rides at higher wattage and see how my legs go.

So lets hear it as a % of FTP:

With all the people that raced last weekend, I thought I would throw in a question to help those that might be racing next weekend...wonder who that is??? what is the one thing you learned in your last race that could help your fellow MG'ers?

One thing I have really started to learn is that the body can do so much more that the mind thinks it can. On my 10k this weekend, I thought there was NO WAY i could hold my pace the 2nd half on the run. I ended up neg. splitting it.
I am really starting to realize that I am way more capable of physicallt doing things than I think.
For example, in my wildest dreams I never would have thought that i would own John&Sam at Lonestar.
Now, I'm thinking it is pretty much a given. Tony- I'm not even giving him a 2nd thought. I know after the bike, He'll be an hour ahead of me. But his quads will be be blown. So that'll be candy from a baby

i can't wait till you get there and realize is 1.2, 56, 13.1 miles, not km.

Love it!  Those are some pretty fierce words there Trevor.  You better bring your A game next week!!!!!!!  It would really suck if I passed any of you since I start an hour later.

A question for the group, especially those with spouses that Tri.  How do you handle the fitness differences between you and your spouse?  I cannot seem to convince my wife that I can go out and ride my bike without needing to push the pace all the time.  She always thinks she is holding me back, and doesn't want it to feel like a leisurely ride for me while she is using it as a workout.  I try to explain that I still enjoy riding with her and can work on techniques if she wants us to both be "working out"

Any thoughts?  Unfortunately I caught the bug and now its biting.

I will say by far this is the hardest thing to balance. I have another friend whos husband does tri and she and I have similar issues.

I am insanely competitive when it comes to sports and my husband. If you knew me well, you would know that competitiveness is NOT in my blood. Not at all. However with my spouse, something just kicks in unnaturally. Is has caused a good deal of frustration in our training because we train for the same events with almost the same training schedule. Some parts of it work beautifull while some, not so much.

I have the greatest frustration on the bike because my husband is much more talented than I am. I do have the same sentiments that I feel bad that he essentially "chaperones" me on the rides and does not get a decent workout himself. Luckily our fitness levels aren't too terribly far apart on the bike (when I am on my tri bike) but I do know that when he rides with me it is not a hard effort like he could get when riding with the faster group.

Honestly what has helped us the most is to seperate our training. The companionship while training can be great but in the end it honestly was causing more damage than benefit. So now we might run at the same time and on the same route, but we dont necessairly run together. That way he can run faster but we still see each other and can check on each other. For the Bike, he has an additional group ride each week that I do not go on because of my work schedule and he can ride with the fast kids. And we dont swim together because we swim at two different pools at different times due to work schedules.

The other area that has been tough is taking suggestions, advice and tips from each other. It is a communication issue that we work though and have had to be very patient with each other. Talking to other couples who tri, it seems to be a common issue mainly with one person (typically the less speedier one) feeling like they are constantly being critiqued and told they are not pushing themselves hard enough.

We have learned that sometimes it is best to wait until you can sit down and have a conversation about the sport rather than to try and provide on the spot advice. (IE waiting until after the bike ride to tell me about a suggestion rather than making it while in the middle of the ride.) Sure I would agree it is a bit less effective to hear it later but for my husband and I it has solved a lot of frustration out on the road.

Hang in there. I completely feel you and your wife's pain. It is a constant learning process. I will definitely say that this has been a different communication challenge that my Husband and I otherwise have never experienced. However we are learning how to assist and encourage each other in different ways. We have both learned that we have different needs when it comes to training encouragement and advice that we both need to be aware of in order for both of us to be happy and satisfied.

I would definitely suggest a sit down conversation where you and your wife can both share your thoughts and feelings. We tried to have this conversation several times immediately following a workout and it never worked but finally we sat down one evening away from a workout and the conversation was so much better. We answered the following questions to each other and it greatly helped:
1) You can encourage me by doing/saying...
2) I feel frustrated in training when...
3) I need you to support me by ...
4) If you notice an area where you can assist me by giving advice you should do it in the following manner...

They seem simple but it helped us! Hope this helps you! Let me know if you have any questions

Ok i want the gold star..
great advice. I am the less slower one in our family, so I catch myself sometimes watch her run and think "She could do this" or "she could do that". I caught myself thinking as I saw her come to the finish line this wekend thinking "Cmon RUN SPRINT RUN". Perceived effort in someone else is impossible to measure. <- very important point
I try not to support, but it can be hard sometimes to not come across as preaching. I think your questions are great conversation starters. I may steal a few of the Stephanie.

I am a totally competitive person as well, I'm lucky right now that she is slower than I.
I couldn't imagine if my wife was faster than me. I do not know how i would handle it?

Steve how do you do it?

Set the ego aside, and be happy for them!  I thought it was SUPER COOL!

My general guidelines:

Sprint (~13mi): 95%+ / Balls to the wall, not sure I'd even monitor watts really... just do it
Oly: 85-90% / Holding back a little
HIM: 75-80% / Pushing it, but contained
IM: 70-75% / Comfortable

For example, my FTP is right around yours, and I averaged 181w (78%) for a 2:30 bike split at Boise.

About time that I posted. Been slightly busy and just doesn't feel like chatting at the moment.

Here's my thoughts of various discussions:

Steve - Hope your surgery went well and you're recovering nicely. Can't be any more painful than having two Cochlear Implant surgeries where my skull get "shaved" off. :-) Yowch! Thank heavens for Perocet! *winks* ;-)

NICE bike porn!

Car - I still have my first car, for almost 8 years, Toyota Corolla Sports. I never ever have any issues with that car. I find SUV's that is "overloaded" with electronics tend to have a lot more problems due to the computerized system. My fiance owns a Land Rover Discovery, and within the 8 years, there was a LOT of problems, and probably cost the company about 10 to 15k worth of crap that they had to replace (thank goodness for warranty!) because his car has like 8 motherboards to control all various things. He still have some issues, but not too bad. So, watch out for SUV's that is "overloaded". :-)

I finished my first charity ride (my RR is up), and let me tell you, I'm just SO grateful that I choose a shorter distances. There were way too many crashes, dangerous paths (who the hell think a roadie can go down a debris filled/crack filled/rock filled wash basin?!), and way too windy (40+mph winds).  Many of my friends that did the 100miler were really ticked off when they finally reached the finish, there was NO ONE THERE to congratulate them. WTH? We didn't even get a frickin' medal.  We think the cause is the two racers that created the course (100mi)...they claim they finished it under 5 hours, they're RACERS, of course they'll finish way under than a recreational rider. Duh? I could go on and on, but overall I had a BLAST on my way back. My fellow 100milers didn't. They really suffered and have proclaimed that it was the hardest ride they ever have done...even the experienced riders.

Spouses issues: I've tried to encourage my Fiance to get into running with me (he used to run track and field in HS and is a fairly good runner on the tready, but it's been quite a while since he ran. However, he just rather stay home, watch TV, surf the 'net. He'll do it when he's good and ready. So I've learned not to push him at all and wait.  He knows that I have to do the training, and whenever I feel like I don't want to do it, he makes a bargain with me. Run or no ice cream. Swim or no dinner, etc. He also pushes me hard when I'm on my trainer, and sometimes makes me do 5 minutes more harder, and yells if I stop, etc.  So he's very encouraging and understanding.   I'm kind of lucky that majority of my workouts are during day while he's at work, and my workouts tend to be short. When I do my workouts, that's  HIS "me time".  He takes my (err, our) dog out for walks and to the dog parks and he does work around the house. It all works out. He does his own thing while I'm out, and I do my own thing while he's working outside the house (ugh, I hate housework, can't you tell?).  I think COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY!

Not racing...*groan* when am I ever going to say "YES I'M RACING!!!" ONE MORE MONTH!
This week is a stepdown/recovery week for me.  HOWEVER, I'm doing my FIRST OWS on sunday!!!!! I'm soooo excited!

From my ride last week, I've learned that once you start to feel a little hot in the head, STOP YOUR BIKE and pour water on your head. You'll feel million times better. Learned my lesson not to let it go on too long. Luckily, I didn't have any problems whatsoever, but still I could have been in trouble with being overheated. :-)

I think I might add a notation in my Lonestar race plan to destroy Trevor and John.  Tongue out

Had to share a funny thing...

I was watching Matlock this morning, "The Heist". And guess what was on? One of the characters was doing a Triathlon. It's so hilarious to see all SO OLD bikes! I don't think they ever heard of "carbon" aero bikes. They all look like all aluminum, old style bikes. There was some aero bars, but the clip-on ones. Seriously retro...and the show was filmed in 1995. Kinda cool to see how far Triathlons has come. :-)

That sounds like my typical race plan for a Sprint.  :-)

I think a more detailed plan can help for longer distances when you will be on course for hours (or days like John and Trevor) and have to deal w/ nutrition issues and possibly more equipment plus pacing and what ifs.

Jeff, my husband and I used to bike together, but the minute I stated training for triathlon he told me I was too fast and won't ride me about 95% of the time.  I hate it.  I would love to do some fun rides, but he thinks he is too slow, too old and too fat.

I am WAY behind, but this did catch my eye....I type fast...so what this says is NOT what i meant.....I like to take my time in those instances Back to my meeting....

I AM!!!  Boston, here I come!!

Hubby got me a new outfit for the race -woohoo!  Hot pink and black, and it fits! Taper feels cruddy, which I'm told is a good thing.  Trying to organize lists for everyone who has a kid or a dog or a carpool for me while we're gone.  Swinging back and forth between total excitement and sheer panic.   Not looking foward to a 5 hour flight, either.  Also got Red Sox tickets for Sunday - it's gonna be quite a weekend, no matter how the race turns out.

Our tri club's motto is Train, Race & Party.  Hubby advises that this weekend he'll train (he's renting a cervelo in Boston), I'll race and we'll both party.  Kids will stay in school in California!!   I can't wait.

SSMinnow - 2010-04-14 4:15 AM YOO-HOO!!!!  It's time to start thinking about the weekend. WHO's RACING?

WHO's TAPERING?

WHAT ARE THE REST OF YOU PLANNING TO DO?

With all the people that raced last weekend, I thought I would throw in a question to help those that might be racing next weekend...wonder who that is??? what is the one thing you learned in your last race that could help your fellow MG'ers?

HollyW - 2010-04-12 1:23 PM WOW...looks like everyone had a busy weekend!!  Super huge congratulations to everyone who raced this weekend!  I haven't got a chance to read the race reports yet but can't wait to do so.

Unfortunately I didn't get any training in this weekend but I did get lots of yard work done & I'm feeling it today.

Why do I think you were Belly Dancing instead of doing yardwork?

I was belly dancing WHILE doing yardwork.....I guess this is why the neighbors think I'm weird. Tongue out

jvanis - 2010-04-14 8:19 AM Curious for our power people.

Sprint
Oly
HIM
IM
My general guidelines: Sprint (~13mi): 95%+ / Balls to the wall, not sure I'd even monitor watts really... just do it Oly: 85-90% / Holding back a little HIM: 75-80% / Pushing it, but contained IM: 70-75% / Comfortable For example, my FTP is right around yours, and I averaged 181w (78%) for a 2:30 bike split at Boise.

Here are my power zones, this is with a FTP of about 235

Active Recovery 0  - 133
Aerobic Threshold 131 - 176
Tempo 177 - 211 (I believe this is my goal for HIM)
LT 212 - 246 (I believe this would be goal for Oly)
Aerobic Capacity 247 - 281 (probably somewhere high LT and low AC for sprints)
Anerobic Capacity 281+

Haven't done or trained for IM but I would guess it would be high AT and low Tempo.

kickitinok - 2010-04-14 11:20 AM Race plan? Do I really need a race plan for a sprint? Don't I just swim as fast as I can, bike like mad, then gimp-run for 10 minutes into my run until my quads relax?

no.

you have to go at 98% of you're FTP.

you have to have at least a 45 oz aero bottle.  and one behind your seat.

tape 6 gu's to your bike.

two spare tubes.  and 8 CO2's.

you have to wear newtons.

compression sleeves on the legs and arm coolers.

you have to have a tri bike and race wheels.

this is all a bunch of crap.  you just have to have fun.

i've tried calling galveston beach patrol twice today but to no avail.  my wife also want to do it.  we'll get it figured out. andy's right on about the booties.  you won't need them.

kkcbelle - 2010-04-13 5:57 PM All right, crew... Criticize our yellow paint (I picked it & I love it), the laundry basket (hubby's), the newspaper (mine, I'm behind on my reading), the cat (cute, isn't she?), the water bottle (mine -- it's pink!), the gold-bottom'ed purse (daughter's -- she's almost 8 and is a slave to fashion), the old man (visiting father), the younger old man (husband), the saddle position, and anything else you want... I don't care cuz I GOT A NEW (green!) BIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Presenting my 2009 Scott Plasma 2 10!! Additions include a Cobb V-Flow saddle, Look Keo 2 Max pedals, and a PD mount. Ain't she purty??!!!
