No personal experience but my favorite tri blogger wrote up a post on this topic not too long ago:

http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2011/02/how-i-travel-with-my-bike.html

I freaking crushed my workout tonight. 1 hour spin at RPE 4ish, then 2 hour run. Killed the run at 7:54 pace - it's fast for me at least at that distance (15.2 miles). I did a full dress rehearsal in terms of clothing and nutrition. The details are in my log if anyone is interested, I won't bore everyone with it here.

In short, it was a huge confidence boost. I'm slowly convincing myself that 12 hours is within reach. That's my last "long" run and tomorrow is my last "long" bike - 3 hours. It's a hard taper from Sunday on.

Nice job and that blogger has a ton of good stuff on his page.  Thanks for that.

I had a group ride today and it was actually my first ride outside this year in WI.  Also did a short little run later in the day after a bunch of landscaping around the house.

It is now 5pm and I am planning to open a Capital Brew Pale Ale which is brewed in Madison, WI.  This made me think of Ironman and and how I will be volunteering again this year at a water station on the run.  Is anyone other than Fred doing IM WI this year?

I guess I think group rides are totally counter to what my coach is telling me. ie; ride easy and do selective intervals. If I ride in a group I will raise my TSS too high and pay a huge recovery cost and not do as well in races.

Yeah...I think finding the right group is the key.  It has to be a blend of how strong the group is, as well as their riding styles.  I've been in groups that only hammer the hills, and some that ride more steady.  Also ridden with groups where I'm the weakest rider, and some where I'm one of the strongest.

I keep my training interests first though.  Lots of times I'll just meet up with the group at the start, chit chat, then totally just do my own thing on my own...then meet up with them again after I and the group finish riding.

I managed the 25 min run/2 hour ride/25 min run yesterday after all. Rode with my training friend. She just bought a new Cervelo tri bike and I could barely keep up with her. She likes to hammer away on the entire ride. She NEVER lets up. She'll talk about how her legs are burning and on fire and just keep hammering away! It was a great workout for me. I wouldn't push myself that hard if I were alone.

I bombed my nutrition schedule though. I was hungry after the first run and ate a couple of fig newtons. Then I didn't fuel at all for the first 40 min of the ride and had nothing on my last run. I paid for it with a terrible headache later last night.

Also good comments on the swim. Bottom line? Triathletes don't generally swim enough (or hard enough) to get continually better in the pool. I don't.

To get better swimming you need to dedicate time. I would say 6-7 swims a week. For most of us that is a really hard task to accomplish. It also is a poor ROI imho for the time-crunched athlete.

Despite that we can all make some nice gains (as many of you have). Just we will never get 'great' until it is a focus. For a TRI-athlete, it is hard to make it a focus isn't it?

It's hard to make consistent improvements in 3 different sports! My first year tri training I was afraid of running because I was recovering from a torn tendon. I would only run 2 days a week. I gave 150% to my swim and made a lot of improvements. Fast forward to this year and I am running more than ever. My cycling and running are both steadily improving. The time I would have to put into improving my swim is just not worth the effort for me. I would have to put in hours of swim time for a few seconds saved in the water. It irritates me that I'm no longer getting faster but I guess it is a trade off for now.

Shoe question - I have a 1/2 marathon next weekend and I'm trying to decide on wearing my new shoes or old ones.  Old ones have 710km on them, new ones 65km.  I wasn't big on the new ones at first since the right one felt tight in the toebox, but it's stretched out a bit and is not nearly as annoying.  Longest run in the new ones was this morning at 13km and everything felt fine - last weekend ran 20km in the old ones and was starting to feel some aches and pains in the last part of the run.  Could have been fatigue, could have been the shoes since they're probably close to their limit.

So, new or old for next weekend?

I'll be there... if you think of the Rhino in "Jumanji" the movie running across the intersection... that will be me on the run, just moving along!

Random question -- after 90 hilly miles yesterday biking and almost 20 miles of runnign between my T run yesterday and today's run, my legs are shelled.  I'm thinking of doing an ice bath after my bike intervals this afternoon, anyone have any experience with this?  Any suggestions?

I've been taking ice baths after my longer workouts. I fill the tub with cold water, put on my tri shorts and a warm sweatshirt, get in, then add the ice. Actually my kids think it's really funny to put the ice in so I let them do it . I just use whatever ice is in my freezer. I have read about other people filling the tub with bags of ice though.

I soaked in an ice bath yesterday immediately after my workout. Today my legs feel a little tired but not sore at all.

Thanks.  I'm in compression tights now but post-bike this afternoon I'm going to try it.  Hopefully it'll help get rid of my "leg flu."

I took ice baths after long runs in training for my first marathon (before getting into tris).  This was when my fitness level was much lower, and I would limp around work the next day after anything over 12 miles.

Nowadays...I don't bother with ice baths.  I'll use recovery tights when needed.  I'll also jump in the ocean after a long run if possible...but the ocean here is only about 74-78 degrees.  I've read a lot of forum discussion about ice baths on runners world...and most say that the water doesn't even need to be that cold for it to be effective.  Anything around 60 degrees will work.  It doesn't have to be super cold with tons of ice like most people think.

Another thought (I'm not sure if this is good or bad) but when I have some time on a recovery day I'll take a hot bath with Epsom salts. Very relaxing and my legs always feel great after.

Heading into a taper week for my Oly this coming Sunday.  Weather forcast for race day is improving.  I've already done 4 smaller races this year (1 running, 2 TTs, 1 sprint) but this is the first race I'm getting a bit nervous for.

2000 yd AM swim, 6 mile run tonight.

Getting psyched for IM Texas.  Decided to ship bike to the IM Bike store.  It will go from my LBS to the IM shop on site.  Anyone have experience with the IM bike shop tune ups?  I'm not sure if it would be best done by LBS or by them.

Feeling pretty good about my bike training.  Had an easy to moderate effort ride yest  (purely based on RPE) and maintained a solid pace, good nutrition, and had lots left in my legs.

If you're a regular with the LBS, I would definitely have them tune it up before shipping it.  They know you and your bike will be more likely to get the attention it deserves.  I'm lucky and have a live in bike fairy who does all of my mechanical stuff.  I haven't had to use a bike shop in years.

My swim !?!?

It seems to get progressively worse as my training gets more active in run/bike.

ie; I am always swimming with fatigue.

Truthfully I am a lot slower in the water right now than I was in January....

Same problem here. Now I don't even want to try to hit my times in the pool because I just get ticked off that I'm slower. I've just been swimming long sets and not looking at the clock. How's that for a bad attitude?!
