My wife has been pretty supportive so far. With only doing sprint distances, my training is only about an hour or so each day, and I'm able to do it when she's not around. Even with all that she still comments now and then how she wishes I'd picked up a different hobby, one that would keep me around the house, like gardening. |

Any others you have done? I did Louisville in 2008. It was 104 degrees when I started the run. The swim is icky, the bike is actually really nice and the run was not fantastic. Biggest issue is the heat. While its been realatively cool a few years, it has the potential to be ridiculous. |

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed I was looking up race reports online for IM Los Cabos since nobody at this site has written one when the first one had this gem. The 112 mile bike is set along the tourist corridor between the relaxed San Jose del Cabo and the vibrant Cabo San Lucas with a grueling section that a friend described as equivalent to the energy lab in Hawaii but on bike! Oh well that would have been a great destination race to entice the wife! |

For now it is Sprint distance only, and within ~2 hours from my home so that I'm not gone all day. As I progress further in my training and up to Olympic, HIM, IM, the proximity restriction will be lifted. |

Eventually I want to venture out and try all the different courses. Pro 4723 CyFair | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed For me "A" races are races I want to do. Travel costs factor in, but I more identify them by if they have a personal meaning or if the location is a draw. Oilman will be my A race for the second half of this year because it's on the IMTX bike course and I LOVE the bike course. Especially in Nov. when the weather is more hospitable. B and C races are timing and location. I'd rather sink the large portion of my race budget into A races and do cheaper local races for these. |

The website literally says "new, faster bike for 2014." I had read that as well. Sounds like a great time. I've read a dozen race reports and by all accounts it's beautiful but brutal. It will be interesting to see what the changes look like. http://www.mapmyride.com/mx/san-jose-del-cabo-baja-california-sur/i... 4042 of gain is more than I'd be willing to take on at this point with 36ft of gain per mile. Even with all that she still comments now and then how she wishes I'd picked up a different hobby, one that would keep me around the house, like gardening. When I first got into tris 5 years ago, the kids were smaller and needed one kind of attention (basic care). I had thought it would get easier as they get older, but now they need another kind of attention (chauffeur service, generally). Thankfully we're in a good network of people so that we can take turns with driving to soccer, etc. Of course, now that hubby is doing tris also (his first year), he's making things more challenging. (Notice, it's hubby starting tris that is making things tough - not me doing an HIM... ) |

I'm lucky there are a bunch of tris of different lengths within 1.5 hours (I haven't even ventured into northern VA or NC, but I could without blinking an eye...) Other than that, it is course - I'd prefer a with-the-current swim, a moderately rolling bike, and a mostly flat run. Yeah, right...haven't found one that has all three yet - but I'm still looking. |

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Originally posted by kaburns1214 So Boston Scott raises a good question for everyone -- Why do you pick the races you do? Course? Location? Field? Is there ever a course that's "too hard" or "too easy?" They've all been for different reasons for me. The one sprint I've done was close to home in the fall of 2010. 2011 I wanted to do Olympics. The first was also close to home and early in the season. The second was based on date and as a warmup to the 3rd which was the NYC Olympic which was picked as a must do race. 2012 I did two HIMs and I wanted flatter courses that were close to home thus Patriot and Pumpkin and one was early and one late. 2013 two more HIMs and I wanted one early season and one late season race with one being a travel race and the other close to home. Thus Rev3 Williamsburg and Maine. 2014 is going to depend on if the wife will let me go IM or not. If she will I'm going to consider course and location. I'm going to try to avoid extreme heat and a hilly bike. Once I have one under the belt those requirements will go away but for my first I just want to finish. If she's not down for an IM I'm likely to do two different HIMs than I've done in the past and travel for one and keep the other in NE. Fairlee VT is a strong consideration for the NE one and then in the fall something like REV3 Maryland, Waterman's half or Mighty Montauk. Beach to Battleship, IMFL and IMAZ look like the leaders for the IM. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed I will select certain races over others at this point in my training because (1) I find the location to be beautiful or interesting; (2) my family benefits in some way from the trip; and (3) the venue is challenging in the ways I want to be challenged. There are definitely venues I don't care to race, but that's mostly location and nothing more than that. I don't think there is an easy Ironman. Every IM has its element that adds a new level of difficulty and pain to the race - be it heat, wind, hills, cold water, rain, etc. |
