San Diego is nice, but not for us.  I'd do San Francisco, but you need to be gazillionaire these days to live there.  Just don't know Arizona well, but I have heard it's a long way from salt water (kind of important to me - almost moved to Boulder, but same knock on it).  Mid-Altantic gets swampy-hot (lived in Philly for 6 years) … and on and on.

So, where is the perfect place?  Maybe Nice or somewhere in Australia, but for now - it's wherever I can get outside to ride!

Would love to hear where people would live if there were no constraints on them (San Francisco is up there for me, as is splitting the year between the New England coast and someplace warm and sunny (with great fishing) in the winter (HI, the Med., etc.).  But that's not happening (money, kids and family tether us happily to MA for now).  Where would you live?

It's funny but since I got smashed on my ride last Sunday my legs are still really tired!

All week they've felt heavy and this morning they felt tired even though I didn't push any hills or anything. I looked back at my Strava file form last Sunday and my HR was in Z2 for 35% of the ride, Z3 for 36% and Z4 for 28% or 44mins (for me strava Z4 is HR 160-177).

That Z4 figure is something I would normally completely avoid if I was out doing a long ride so do you think 44mins of it is enough to smash me for the rest of the week???

David, I can't comment on the zones, or heart rate or a whole lot of other stuff, but I will say that after a rough day, I need to recover. I see you have nothing logged for the next day, then it looks like you were right back at it. My questions would center on nutrition (was it normal?), activity (how was the next day?) and rest (did you get a normal amount or need more the next day?). The biggest issue I've found is hydration during and after the ride. I have had it take a few days after a brutal session before I was back to normal. Some folks will probably look at salt as well. How hot was it on the ride? How were you sweating (normal, more, less)? And did you notice anything with your urine (color differences)?

The biggest thing I learned from one of those days was the importance of hydration/nutrition before, during and after. The lesson sucked, but I sure won't forget it. I doubt you will either

Now I wait for Janyne, Ben, Yanti, Marc and others that are much better at this stuff to give you their opinions (which hold a lot more credibility).

Thanks Chris, yes I didn't drink enough and it was 31celcius (88F) by the end of the ride. I'm quite used to the heat but I think the prolonged bout of threshold work at the end has really knocked my leg muscles about.

I think I'll just stick to my cruisy z2 rides for the rest of this month. I've got an ocean swim in a couple of weeks (Noosa Swim 2km) so I should be swimming a bit more anyway.

I'm thinking it's both the size & amount of intensity of the ride, making it a big training load to absorb. My HR strap has been a bit goofy for a bit, so no good HR data to break it down like you did. I use power more so. If you've followed any of my rides* you can see a TSS number put in. I would guess this could go well past 150, possibly up close to a Saturday ride I'll do every couple weeks which will be at or just over 200. This could be over what a solid HIM ride would be. I'll usually feel those for a couple days afterward. This is the reason Monday's ride is more moderately hard instead of hard like both Sat & Wed. Given the lag of HR, it's probably more than 44 min in Z4. And that would be a good deal of it for you. Couple that with the overall length of the ride and it's not so surprising you're tired for a few days after.

*I still need to update friends list for all the new people here.

Thanks for the advice, I usually allow myself at least 2 complete rest days after a race, it just seems to be what my body needs. That last hammerfest portion of the ride smashed me so looking back I probably needed a decent rest.

Anyway, live and learn! Maybe I'll get a power meter this year? Just need the price to drop a bit more...

I'm about 60 miles from Mumbles, near Caerphilly, which is about 26 miles north of Cardiff. I have a Tour of Pembrokeshire century ride in April, which is going to cover more to the north of the county, which I haven't been to yet. I also have the Wales Long Course weekend, set in Tenby, in July. Looking forward to it, I love Tenby. I don't think I've been to Dinas before.

Oh Dazzers. Is there some kind of "get out of jail free" card for Jantastic?

It looks like my prolonged case of food poisoning which suddenly got worse is either typhoid fever (again?!) or bacterial or amoebic dysentery. Things were gross, but now they are REALLY gross. No wonder I was so frickin' tired. (from the fever alone would cause it)

Yeah, I can't actually move, but it's fun to think about. Unless of course I got a new job, then I would move.

My husband and I talked pretty seriously about moving to Australia for a couple of years awhile back, but it never happened. It's not off my radar though. Then I think back to my honeymoon in Tahiti..average temp is 75-80 all year long. So without moving out of the United States, I guess my next best bet to coming close to Tahiti would be Hawaii. So that's what I would choose

It really depends on where you are in your training cycle.  If you were either not used to the distance or are at a "tired" part of your training cycle, the effects could certainly linger for a while.  Be sure that you are keeping up your nutrition and hydration and be confident that it'll come back soon.

Sure. I'm a vegetarian edging toward vegan.  It's a lifestyle more than a diet.

But a note on carbs, carbohydrates aren't bad.  Stay away from the simple sugars.  That makes sense, right?  Less candy and sweets.  Eat complex carbohydrates found in whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and gain all the disease fighting benefits they bring.

Thankfully chocolate is both a vitamin (Vitamin C!) and a complex carb.  Right?

I am more flexitarian leaning towards vegetarian.....I would love the vegetarian/ vegan folks to share some recipes cause I am running into a rut with them.

I was thinking of sharing this on with Ann-Marie the other week. I didn't because it makes 8 servings.  I freeze half.

Cincinnati Chili Sauce Warning, it does include processed meat substitute.  Note:  The chili is served alone, 1 way; ways, over spaghetti; 3 ways, with added beans; 4 ways, with chopped onions; 5 ways with shredded cheese!  And yes, we have used vegan cheese substitute when we had a vegan house guest.

You'll get the hang of it. What you can do in the few days before, how to recover after, and what you can do in that time. May actually be better doing some light activity as opposed to nothing at all. You should be able to push some rides before the end of the month, but would have to weigh that against what's going on in the rest of your training.

I live in the Raleigh, NC area and we can ride and run outside most of the year without going to extraordinary measures.  We have mountains a few hours to the west -- questionable for a day trip but easy for a weekend trip.  We have the ocean about 2-3 hours (longer if you go to the outerbanks).  The Gulf Stream comes close enough to the NC coast that the water temperature are pretty reasonable.  Unlike the midwest, we are not socked in with clouds all winter.  Lots of blue skies which make things seem better.

People around here are kinda cranky because it's going to be a high of 40 tomorrow.   Normal is 50-51.  Oh, and we might have flurries over the weekend.  Some areas just north of here had flurries early yesterday morning but I have yet to see a flake.

Yeah, carbohydrates aren't really "bad". They're energy. A number of the diet programs are meant more for inactive people, so the carb heavy sources get cut out because they really don't need them as the extra carbs will be stored. Even with my activity level, I don't really eat *that* much from commonly thought of carb heavy sources by taking in things that Tom mentioned.

We keep looking, but so far haven't found the right place (mind you, we've lived in Cleveland a couple times over the years - my wife is also from that area - and it helps to lower the bar for other places as far as weather is concerned.  Great city, but not great weather!).

Matt

Yeah, I can't actually move, but it's fun to think about. Unless of course I got a new job, then I would move. My husband and I talked pretty seriously about moving to Australia for a couple of years awhile back, but it never happened. It's not off my radar though. Then I think back to my honeymoon in Tahiti..average temp is 75-80 all year long. So without moving out of the United States, I guess my next best bet to coming close to Tahiti would be Hawaii. So that's what I would choose

Remind us, what do you do for a living?

I do indeed live in paradise. Come on down. When I lived on Long Island, I took every advantage I could of what the area had to offer, NYC, Ranger hockey, Broadway plays, etc.  Down here we do the same. It gets hot during the summer, but that is why we have fishing poles and a 2 person kayak. 2 hours from Disney World, which we love (going again tomorrow). I think it is simply your outlook, there is good anywhere, you just have to find it.

Having said that, the Carolina area is nice. We stopped in Greenville SC this fall, and a few other places around that area and it has merit. We visited Alaska a couple years ago, but I could live there for 1 month out of the year. In your "no constraints" scenario, I think I'd live in an RV and see America. Although I wonder how TW would feel about that?

For most people, there is a story in how they came to the sport as beginners. Some of the most inspiring of those beginner tales begin with health scares.
