Expert 1797 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS!!! kt65 - 2009-10-07 5:46 PM Suzy, is your high 150's/low 160's still Z3 or is it low Z4? I think that would be helpful for Sam to know. I am curious too, as my HR is super weird and we are still trying to figure me out. All of my long runs thus far have been in Z1 (low) at 9:00-9:25/mi pace. I am doing a 17 mile run this Sunday and have been told to keep it in Z2 which for me is 139-148. Which is going to feel MUCH harder. We'll see how it goes. Sam, as you have been doing speedwork, is your effort on the last few intervals how you felt at the end of the Army 10 miler? Or do you have gas in the tank. High Z4 is quite an effort, I don't know that one can do that for a full 26.2 miles. On the other hand, if it feels more like how it feels when you are in the middle of a tempo run, then that might be definitely manageable. My race pace runs are only about 7 miles long and I usually feel really strong throughout. Maybe you can try a shorter MP run this week before your long run and see what your HR is and how it feels? I felt really good at the Army 10 miler for the whole race and felt I could have at least done a 1/2 mary at that pace. That said I wonder if I was getting a little tired on the last mile or two but it was the only rolling part of the course. However, it was nothing like I felt at the end of the Shamrock 1/2 where I ran really hard and gave it everything I had. I had nothing left at the end and had to work hard to hold together what I did have left. I don't do tempo and race pace runs very well during training. I was kinda hoping the Army 10 miler would be my last race pace test. I did 16m overall that day w/ 10m at race pace+. Ya know - it will be what it will be. So I should just stop stressing. |

I'm on a new bike(roadie), but it seems to fit me fine. I just noticed getting down on the rings seem awkward. I do have a brace under the front tire to lift it up. It just feels weird dropping down on the rings. Maybe the bars are too low? Have a good night all. |

I usually have a fan blowing right on the back tire but tilted up towards me because I sweat buckets on the trainer. This helps keep the rubber from burning (and smelling). I think for my Kurt Kinetic trainer (fluid) they recommend that once you tighten the crank, you should be able to spin the wheel about one revolution. I have figured out the optimal position, by doing a flat outdoor ride in a hard gear (measure the distance and the time) And then do the same timed ride in the hardest gear and see if you can get close to the same distance. I did 5 miles and then adjusted the crank accordingly. Now, I have a piece of scotch tape at the 12 oclock position so it is always the same! I'm sure there is an easier way, but my rides with HR and pace seem really close (outdoors vs. trainer). |

I'm sure there is an easier way, but my rides with HR and pace seem really close (outdoors vs. trainer). I have a KK Road Machine too but I'm not sure I'm following this. So let me ask this dumb question. The "crank". Are you talking about the black adjustment knob in the back that moves the roller? If so then the number of times you turn this as long as its between 2 & 5 (spec) doesn't matter. < 2 you might not make full contact and >5 you are over tightening it. The resistance in a fluid trainer is provided by the fluid itself. So tire tension provided by the "tightness" of the crank or adjustment knob as KK calls it does not set the resistance on this specific trainer. (or technically any fluid trainer) I might have missed it Trevor but what kind of trainer do you have? As far as your cadence. Are you using the GSC10? If so, the default tire size is 700 x 23. Is this your tire size? x 10000 on the fan Kim. |

We should recruit Chet back to NC and then it can be a full MG team. Let me see just how cold the water is and then I 'll let you know. Maybe I can "ask" to borow the hubby's new aero helmet and do the bike portion. Trevor - one piece of advise on the trainer, be very aware of your fluid intake. I find it to be about 2x what I would do on the road b/c you don't have the wind to cool you off. Hence Kim's comment about lots of sweat. I normally go through 1.5 to 2 bottles an hour to stay properly hydrated on hard workouts. |

He shouldn't have to calibrate, but I know mine calibrated the first time I went outside with it. I had been on the trainer a couple times before calibrating and it, like Trevor's, seemed to read fast. The trip was awesome! We had a blast. The baseball could have been better. Tiller pitched a dominating complete game in our only victory. But our offense was terrible - I'm guessing 9 hits for the weekend. Maybe 5 hours of go-cart racing is bad for hitting... |

I'm sure there is an easier way, but my rides with HR and pace seem really close (outdoors vs. I have a Blackburn fluid. Yes using the GSC10. yes thats the tire size too. Another thing I noticed is it felt kind of choppy riding every time i shuffled around in the seat.....weird or normal? not sure, but someone w/ more experience might. what does choppy mean. my trainer is smooth |
