Jen- Take care of yourself and your health as priority one.

Okay, about me. My name is Lynne and I'm a 4th year med student on Army scholarship IRL. That pretty seriously screwed up my tri season this year, a fact I discovered after it was over with two really icky IM finishes. An expensive and painful lesson. Trying to get back on track I ramped up my running miles too quickly and am now swimming because I can't run without developing pain afterwards. Most seasons I don't swim from post-IM(early Sept) until Jan post-Disney Marathon.

Triathlon history- over 10 years since my first race with some time off for my third knee reconstruction and the first year of med school. I did IM Lake Placid in 2002, 2003, and 2007 and IM WI in 2006, 2007. I still haven't put together a decent Ironman in comparison to HIM times yet and am thinking that my next one will likely be 2009. I also enjoy Xterra racing and depending on where I match may race Xterra Worlds in Maui in 2008.

About real life- I am applying for pediatrics for residency and my list is limited to the Army programs. I really enjoyed Tripler in Honolulu and Madigan near Tacoma WA for the academic qualities of the programs. Liked Washington better as a place to live but ranked Tripler in HI first. San Antonio was okay and I didn't even bother interviewing with the National Capital program(oops, my bad). Where I'm spending my next three years has already been determined by the program directors but I don't find out until 15 Dec.

My final quirk- much of my swimming will be at Ft Drum which is a 25 M pool but I log swimming in yds so I convert it and that is why the numbers may look a little funny. My sandbag goal for the month is 18,000.

OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS GROUP NEEDS TO FIRE UP (*) (*) (*) (*) [That is the sound of me clapping my hands]. Towards this end, I am supposed to swim a timed 600 tonight - taking a look at my improvement - after I finish - I will swim another, unplanned, unrehearsed 400 in which my goal will be to equal the 200 splits of the first 600. If I accomplish this - well - I get Ben and Jerry's tonight - if I don't - you name it - first suggestion (from our team you others) get's their wish. Since everything I say, by definition, is the truth, I will be the sole time keeper for this personal challenge - any takers?

I would normally swim tonight, but my wife and I have a meeting.  So the pool will have to shift to Thursday.  I'll get some yards in then.

I think if you don't make your goal that you need to put a "OSU Buckeyes" logo on your Avatar.  Since OSU is playing LSU in the championship game.

Ohh - You don't know how badly I would like to do that - but then we would have an issue with The Bear and DerekL. I am using this avatar for the month of December because I lost a bet with them and this is the payoff - and NO - I do not have a gambling problem.

Ok, I think that if you do not make your goal tonight you should have to give your Ben n Jerrys to someone else. And.....not have any yourself.   Not a problem with your time keeping skills.

Well off to eat and then log my workout for the day.

Well - I made my goal for last night's swim. I improved on my 100 splits by about 22 seconds or 10%. I was pretty happy with that. I have until mid April to get my 100 splits down to 2 minutes. I started at 4:30 in October and am down to 3:30 now. If I can trim another minute in two months, that gets me to 2:30 at the beginning of February. I would then only have to shave :30 in another two months (which I assume will be the hardest part). Here are the issues I am having.

I obviously lose time at the turn points. I do not flip turn and at one end of the pool it is only 3 feet, so turning quickly is an issue. Do I learn a flip turn or is there a better way to turn that will save me a little time. The positive is that in open water, I don't have to turn, so I should get a better time than my splits would predict, the negative is that one of my races in May is an indoor swim.

I am way more comfortable turning and breathing on one side than the other. When I turn to my left, I easily roll to my side and have no issues, when I turn to my right, I have a more difficult time and sometimes get half water if I don't turn well. If I do, I feel like I lose momentume because I start to sink. Suggestions?

I have trouble with my breathing pattern. When I do a three stroke breath pattern, I feel like I still have air to get rid of when I am getting ready to breath in. If I go to four strokes, I am breathing on the same side all of the time. If I go to five strokes, I feel like I am waiting too long to take another breath. If I try to exhale faster to get to three strokes, I feel like I am breathing too hard. I have a suspicion that I would exhale faster if I swam faster (more strokes per second) but I tend to lose a lot of form when I do that and I don't like that feeling. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS!!!!!

That's probably enough for now. Can some of you good swimmers give me some points of emphasis to work on? Thanks.

Seriously, that just looks like a bunch of reindeer huddled together in the water feeling very uncomfortable. Is that what we are dealing with here?

John,
I don't know that I can help a whole lot on the breathing thing.  I breath every 2nd stroke on the same side.  I can for a lap or 2 handle every third, but I end up switching back to every 2nd about lap 2-3 almost without fail.

Right now the most important aspect of swimming is being comfortable in the water.  If you feel natural breathing every 4th stroke than do that, and don't worry about it.  It is great to be able to bi-lateral breath but it is hardly essential.  Although it does help to balance your stroke.

The other night I was at the pool and saw someone that I know swimming.  They were crossing over with their right hand every time they breathed.  When they were doing that it ultimately hurts the power and the stroke.  So I told them they needed to work on not crossing over.  They were rotating great on the breath stroke (every 4th) but that caused them to cross the center line of their body.

I don't know if that helps you or not.  We swim and we judge how we are doing based on feel, however a coach or someone watching from the deck can see what we are doing.  Something that I have been told can help is have someone video tape you swimming, then you can see what you are doing.

Learn to flip.  Even if you don't do it all the time, the more you practice the better you get.  It's a worthwhile endeavor.

I am way more comfortable turning and breathing on one side than the other. Practice breathing to your weak side.  Maybe in the warmup when you aren't worried about speed only breath to that side.  Also take a look at what your body is doing when you are breathing.  I would bet that you aren't properly balanced or lifting your head too much.  Can you have someone look at your stroke?

I have trouble with my breathing pattern. When I do a three stroke breath pattern, I feel like I still have air to get rid of when I am getting ready to breath in. If I go to four strokes, I am breathing on the same side all of the time. If I go to five strokes, I feel like I am waiting too long to take another breath. Dude.  Stop thinking so hard.  Do you count steps when you run to decide when to breathe?  Nope.  So JUST BREATHE when you need oxygen.  Simple.   For what it's worth, I either breath 2 or 3 depending on how fast I am going and I think I almost always end up "adjusting" the exhale.  Like, I think I end up spitting out the very last bit of air with my head turned to breathe before inhaling the new breath.  Maybe this is "wrong" but it works for me.  Bottom line...I'm not REALLY thinking about it...just breathing in and out.

Well I hit the pool last night, tossed in another 2000 yard swim.  That puts me at 6100 for the month.  I know I will not swim tonight, but I will likely try to get another swim in Saturday.  Maybe that day I can do a few extra yards to make up for the end of Dec.

My goal for the month is only 20,000, but I would like to hit 28,000 give or take a 500.  If I do that I will have hit 200,000 yards for the year.  That last 8K may be pretty hard to get this month.

Keep swimming.

9509 yds for the week.

Since my stated goal was only 18,000 and there is a penalty for hitting it early I will be revising it to 35,000 yds. I should still go over 100% but not til the last week when my going over can help the team

Hey Guys,

I have updated the team spredsheet and everyone is doing good. Xterratri, I have increased your goal to your stated 35,000. I will be a little scarce for a few days, I have come down with something and have been just laying around trying to not be sick. But I am, so I'll be here off and on as I can and hopefully I'd be better quickly and get my swims in. Not a big deal just the flu or something. Have a good week everyone.

Chris

I completed my personal goal of swimming 30000 yards in a week last week (do not try this at home- I was a swimmer in high school and my swimming has been so blah this year, so I needed to do something to change things up to get my training for IMLP off on the right foot).  My original goal of 40050 was based on me not completing this personal challenge.  So I guess I should increase my goal.  So put me down for 50000 yards as of right now (this is going to keep going up hopefully- I'm trying to see if it will be possible for me to hit 100,000 this month though it's probably not going to happen for a number of reasons).  I'm just focused on swimming as much as I can safely do right now...

Hi everyone. I pledged 12,500 yds to the team and should be able to make it, especially if I up the per-swim yardage a touch. Last week was a bear at work. Swam 2x---1200 and 1400 for a total of 2600. About 20% of my goal.

My background: I started off as an adult-onset runner and began cycling to crosstrain during marathon training. Last few years have been way more biking than running, though I try to still run a few times a week. Started to swim a little last winter to help lose some weight, Signed up to do Chicago Triathlon, but things got in the way and was unable to participate. So, going to try again next year.

Good eve Snowballers!!

Donto has posted the Team list and we are a firm 2nd! I just know we will kick butt next week too and take over 1 st.

First: I want to say a Big ole' Way To Go to everyone on last weeks swims!

Second: Keep up the good work and to you all in bad weather sections of the country be careful if you drive to the pool or gym.

Third: I think my flu bug is about gone and I'll get my lazy self back in the pool tomorrow.

And finally Congrats to those super swimmers: Xterratri and Oceanannie, who not only swam alot last week. They upped their goals.  And WSM9363, who made his goal for % this week.

Well that is about it from here in Soggy Ohio, everyone have a great week

Hi Fellow Snowballers!!!  Sorry about joining the party late but it's been a rough week health wise, I was down and out for about a week.  Feeling a little better this week.  Hope everyone is progressing with their monthly goals.  I got a fairly good start tonight with a 2100 yard swim with a monthly goal of 15,000-yds.  Hopefully, I can catch up and finish the month strong!

 Good Luck Team!!  ---Jim
