Nice VISA commercial congratulating Michael Phelps.

It was as if Morgan Freeman was watching the games with us!! So eerie! No wonder he played God in Bruce Almighty. MP and his mates won by a wider margin this time.. Not as fun to watch.

I know, I saw that commercial and though "wow, they must have prerecorded that knowing he was gonna win".

I love Morgan Freeman's voice. Such a nice quality.

Not as fun to watch? I watched it standing up - I couldn't sit! The whole "it ain't over til it's over" mentality.

I thought it was funny that they had such a HUGE lead and Phelps was shouting "GO! GO!"

I loved that they were aiming for the time and trying to get under 7 minutes.  That, to me, is truly magnificent - to try to surpass those boundaries.

I'm sad that I haven't been able to watch any of Phelps' races. I think he has a few more, so I'll hope to catch at least some of them... he is a joy to watch.

If you look at Phelps on the anchor leg, you can read his lips counting down six, "five, four, three....."  as the clock winds down to 7:00.

So I'm sure this has been posted in some other thread, but I just heard how much Phelps eats during a day

Breakfast

-3 fried egg sandwiches, loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and mayo

-3 pieces of french toast

-3 chocolate chip pancakes

-1 bowl of gritts

-1 omlet (5 eggs)

Lunch

-1lb enriched pasta

-2 large ham and cheese sandwiches on white bread with mayo

-1000cal worth of energy drinks

Dinner

-1lb enriched pasta

-1000cal worth of energy drinks

I guess it's 12000 calories, I might be missing something but that's just crazy

An answer to why Phelps doesn't wear the full LZR suit on the fly!  Thanks for the link Melissa.

3. HE WEARS DIFFERENT SUITS FOR DIFFERENT EVENTS BECAUSE SOME SUITS ARE DESIGNED FOR CERTAIN STROKES: When you watch Phelps swim the freestyle events, he usually wears the kind of Speedo LZR Racer that has straps over his shoulders and goes all the way down to his ankles. But when he swims an event where he needs to perform the butterfly stroke, he only wears the LZR Racer pants. There is so much shoulder motion required for the fly, he feels more comfortable without something over his shoulders. You'll also see him in the relays immediately unzip his suit and pull it off his shoulders and down around his waist. It's not a vanity thing; he's not trying to show off his abs for the cameras. It's because the suits are ridiculously tight (they're designed to compress your body) and most swimmers want to unzip as soon as possible.

Now that makes total sense to me. I didn't know the suits were that tight on the shoulders.

Read an article where Mark Spitz was saying that you have to swim 6mph in order to overcome the drag coefficient (something to that effect) - and that only 10 men in the world can swim that fast.

Oh, would like to make one little correction to your quote:

sesh - 2008-08-14 4:49 PM

You'll also see him in the relays immediately unzip his suit and pull it off his shoulders and down around his waist hips. Waaaaaay low on his hips. It's not a vanity thing; he's not trying to show off his abs for the cameras. It's because the suits are ridiculously tight (they're designed to compress your body) and most swimmers want to unzip as soon as possible.

And I thank him for it.

I was watching verrrrrrrrrrry carefully.

I also thought he looked tired when he walked off the pool deck after his win. Maybe he just went into immediate power-down mode ...

If he doesn't win 8 golds it is because someone on the relay messed up or he just got tired in the 100 fly. There isn't anyone swimming today that could beat him when he is not tired.  From the looks of the race today there is just no way he can be beat.  He might lose but he can't be beaten.

  • If you look closely, u can see there is redness on the shoulders where the straps used to be. Ouch.

Most swimmers wear their suits super-tight, even non-Olympians. My sis, who has NEVER been my size gave me some of her old cast-offs to train in, and they fit me perfectly, so they must have been squeezing her. But they all do that.

It's good drag. I keep all my suits as long as possible. Holes? Good. Pieces hanging off? Even better. Just wear another suit underneath, and the destroyed one makes for a great drag suit.

Yup, sis used to do that too. Sometimes the guys on her team would wear cut up tights or something to create more drag, since wearing 2 speedos doesn't do much.

Guys usually wear a drag suite (they sell these new) on top of their speedo. Less revealing and creates more drag. That way when you have just your race suit on you feel faster.

Yeah, I don't know - I never actually saw them, since I only went to her meets, not her practices. But she used to tell me about some of the stuff they did.

we used to wear two suits in water polo... in case the outer one got torn off, you wouldn't be embarrassed by the cold water.  Saw a guy that wore one once ... whoops

    Sweet!

    What a great race.

Mark Spitz is clearly thrilled for Phelps. And imagine how awesome it must have been for Phelps to be congratulated by the man who held that record for 36 years.

What a freaking close race. And I love that he drove it into the wall. Yeah!
